The NHRDN in association with People Matters B-school Ranking 2013
In a first-of-its-kind endeavour, National HRD Network joins hands with People Matters to gauge and rank B-schools in the country. It is the only ranking to have involved more than 30 senior corporate members in its design and execution
Sixteen years ago, Business Today magazine and independent research agency Cosmode jointly carried out the first B-school ranking. Since then, there has been a plethora of rankings and surveys, leading to cynicism and confusion among the B-schools and the aspirants. Unfortunately, most of the present day rankings are based on information taken at face value from the institutes rather than authenticating and validating the data provided. The stakes have risen as most of the aspirants do an MBA to jump start their careers and hence choosing the right B-school for the right discipline has become critical.
Bulk of the present day rankings are primarily perception based Sitting AC room Exercise rather than a field-based endeavour. There is virtually little effort to authenticate and validate the data provided by the B-schools which is taken at the face value.
What all these developments have done in turn, is to create apprehensions regarding the authenticity of rankings as such
leading to rejection of the same. Many stakeholders talk with various professional institutions, Coaching Institutes, faculty of various B-schools. Many of the stakeholders have been approaching National HRD members and its leadership team at various forums and even in personal capacity expressing dissatisfaction and enquiring about the true picture in order to be able to take an informed decision for their childrens admissions. Many of them felt that National HRD Network (NHRDN), in its capacity as a truly professional and Apex Body for Leading HR practitioners and as the pioneer of the HR movement in the country, is best suited to take up this as a worthwhile social cause and provide a Benchmark Ranking to which all stake-holders can look up to and trust. NHRDN is a leading HR professional body with 13000 full-time members who account for a great percentage of total hiring in the country. It also provides a platform to HR professionals to exchange views on important matters including the intellectual capital and Academic Excellence of various institutions in the country for the purpose of their own Recruiting, Employee Development and Consulting requirements.
-
The National HRD Network (NHRDN), in its capacity as the apex body for leading human resources practitioners partnered with People Matters to assess the true picture of the current B-schools so that aspirants and other stakeholders could take an informed decision. NHRDN with its 12,500 members account for a great percentage of total hiring in the country.
The NHRDN-People Matters B-school rankings are an evaluation of the academic environment and the industry reputation of the leading B-schools in the country. The 40 schools ranked in the exercise were assessed on nine competencies that measure the quality of knowledge creation, knowledge application and knowledge dissemination in these institutions.
Research Methodology
In order to effectively launch the exercise and complete it in a time-bound manner, NHRDN constituted an Advisory Committee for the initiative under the chairmanship of its National President Mr. S.Y. Siddiqui, which had leading members from both Industry as well as Academia.
To begin with, a small task-force of five members was formed to do the initial work of identifying the parameters to be considered, based on the huge research work and secondary data available in this domain. The task-force also studied the Ranking Methodology being adopted by leading ranking agencies abroad, and tried to incorporate some key parameters from there as well. This was then presented to the entire committee and after extensive brain-storming the final parameters to be considered were evolved. This set the context for second meeting, where the weightages were assigned to these parameters after detailed deliberations. The entire focus
and accent has been on ensuring that all relevant parameters for assessing quality of the B-schools are incorporated.
The committee was of unanimous view, that the B-schools should be looked from a much broader perspective of Knowledge Creation, Knowledge Application and Knowledge Dissemination. Knowledge Creation can be measured by the institutes focus on Intellectual Capital and Research Output. Knowledge Application refers to the contribution by the institute to industry in fields of Training and Consulting. Lastly, Knowledge Dissemination refers to the Academic Rigor and preparing industry-ready professionals. Also, given the ever-rising need of international acceptability of Indian B-schools, the committee also agreed upon the need of International Accreditations and collaborative efforts to be included.

Intellectual Capital Since ancient ages, India has the tradition of sending the princes to Gurukuls to learn under the tutelage of wise men and scholars and such approach has been followed in most of the countries. This was the genesis of considering this parameter as the most important one. It is felt that intellectual capital of a B-school is the basic foundation on which its quality rests.
The focus here was on Academic Pedigree of the faculty, research output, constant knowledge updating and faculty skill building initiatives undertaken by the institute.
Academic Excellence
Business schools are the crucibles for transformation, wherein the raw talent is converted into industry ready professionals.
Anton Chekov once said Knowledge is of no value unless you put into practice. This statement formed the cornerstone for this parameter, as in todays world, the institute need to be responsive and more importantly pro-active to the fast and ever-changing industry needs and dynamics. Also, they need to keep on continuously renewing their knowledge and keeping the students updated. They also need to ensure that student development and learning is of top quality and are exposed to practical situations through industry visits, extensive project work and interaction with thought leaders from Corporate World.
The focus has been on introduction of new electives, pedagogy richness (including case-studies, management simulation games, and experiential learning activities), industry interface and involvement of students in live industry
projects to get a real-hand feel of what is happening in the industry.
Students Profile in Terms of their Quality and DiversityWe examined the students profile on two parameters. Academic credentials were considered important as the student quality will determine the type of managers they will become. The second parameter was Diversity as the quality of learning depends directly on diversity.
The key areas considered here were Cut-Off Percentiles, diversity in selection process, as well the diversity in student profile including Educational Background, Gender, previous Corporate Experience as well as nationality. Since B-schools are primarily in the business of
classroom teaching to prepare industry-ready professionals.
To effectively capture the essence mentioned above, the research concentrated on MDP and Executive Education, Centres of Excellence and their achievements, as well as the level of participants in these assignments. It also tried to capture the number of faculty on various boards of organisations, various corporate bodies and government committees.
Placements
Show me the money and the rest will follow. As the primary tangible take-away from a B-school, the importance of placements can never be neglected. But the recent studies have also shown the slowing down impact of just monetary figures and profiles being offered have also become important.
Given the secrecy and sentiments that surrounds Placement details, the Research focussed primarily on the salary figures, the sectoral diversity as well as the quality of summer internship and also the quality of companies visiting the campus.
International Accreditation and Linkages Regarded by most experts as the certificate for the quality of the program and the institute, International Accreditations and Linkages are also fast becoming a necessity in the times of increasing global competition. International Accreditation is also a stamp of quality of the institute. Collaborations and tie-ups with schools in different parts of the world are facilitated because of International Accreditation.
The research focussed on various Accreditations as well as collaborations
grooming leaders, efforts were made to identify that how much weightage is given to the psychological testing regarding leadership attributes.
Corporate Connectedness
Top Business Schools across the world have been knowledge creators and pioneering contributors to Industrial Development. This thought leadership is what differentiates the grain from the chaff. Corporate Connectedness helps the institutes understand present industry trends and developments which they can then incorporate in their
-

for faculty and student exchange programs, and also the frequency and quality of international visitors to the institutes.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure is the basic necessity for any B-school and its importance cannot be underestimated. In its holistic definition, this includes both the Hard as well as Soft- Infra for any college.
The focus here was to capture the residential nature of the program, richness of the library and knowledge sources.
Campus Life
The quality of a B-school is always judged as much by out-of-class activities as by its academic rigor. So whether it is a three-day non-stop management fest or disguised market research or the corporate panel discussion, these are equally great learning lessons and practical take-away for any B-school student. Not to forget is the need for socially sensitive and responsible citizens for tomorrow, which is reflected by involvement of students in social activities. In present day world, entrepreneurial mindset among managers is another differentiating factor.
Through the research, we tried to capture the number of student-driven committees, their activities, the performance of students in various competitions as well as the social activities undertaken. We also tried to cover the existence of entrepreneurship and number of students associated with it.
Institute Leadership and Governance The captain of the ship best decides its direction and fate. This describes
the parameter the best, as the institute leadership is the best predictor of its future journey. Leadership of the institute determines its road-map and strategic vision. On the other hand, governance reflects the empowerment and transparency in the school. These two factors lead to a sense of purpose and involvement among the faculty, staff and students and help institute go a long way.
This aspect was covered in forms of Formal and Informal interviews across various stake-holders.
Short listing of B-schools for Participation The starting point for short-listing various colleges was the listing of the colleges in various present day rankings. The data for last two years was studied to take care of aberrations arising, if any. Preference was given to the surveys where hard data focus was higher compared to perceptual data.
Using these secondary data, 75 schools were shortlisted, whom we approached for participation in a phased-wise manner. We did not want to miss out on any of the known B-schools in the country, so repeated efforts were made to reach out to them. Some of them pointed towards their policy of putting every required information on their website, and asked us to use that data. The Advisory Committee was keen to identify lead B-schools and therefore the decision was not to extend the list of colleges.
The committee decided to finally include only those colleges which offer AICTE or UGC affiliated courses. The committee decided to include only those colleges in the final ranking where at least three batches of students have passed out. Newer colleges have been however
covered in the list of EMERGING B-SCHOOLS category.
Research Process
The entire research process was entirely data-based with no component of perceptual data. It was a three-tiered process, with each of the participating B-schools first being sent an exhaustive Questionnaire. After the Questionnaire was filled and shared by the B-schools, a Research Team visited in person each of the participating B-schools. For most of the places, it was a two-member team including one research Team member and one Industry Representative nominated by NHRDN. The team spent close to six to eight hours at each of the participating institutes, trying to validate the information provided and also gauge the qualitative aspects related to Leadership and Governance. Subsequently, while entering the data, some of the data which seemed slightly out of place, was checked again and modifications were made on the basis of the response received.
The entire research process involved three main researchers, thirty industry representatives who visited various colleges in person to ensure the authenticity of the data, a number much higher than the number of people involved in any of the ranking processes so far in the country today. Also, unlike most of the perception-based studies today, the painstaking effort was taken to validate and authenticate every bit of information provided.
After consultations with industry leaders and academicians, the nine competencies were weighted based on order of their relevance. For developing and conducting the survey and methodology, NHRDN employed the experiential learning and research company, Cinque Education, as the research partner.
