Students turn out to elect SGA officersBy Mark Burridge

Last week, students from every classvoted for their peers in the SGA elections.In her weekly news and notes announce-ments, Mary Grant congratulated SGApresident-elect Jessica Krason and Student

Trustee-elect Jameek Clovie specificallyalong with all other winners.

“It is important to know that I have ahand in what happens,” said Senior JamalAhamad on why he voted. Ahamad said hevotes because he knows that his votecounts.

Students on campus voted for a num-

ber of different reasons, but the Americandemocratic ideal cropped up in a lot ofcomments.

Freshman Alyson Carey said that shevoted partially because she was running fortreasurer of her class, but also because shewanted to have input in the school’s elec-toral process.

Freshman Ashley Schuster had similarreasoning.

“I’m voting because my friends are run-ning, but also because I like beinginvolved,” she said.

However, not all students were votingout of principle, some just thought of it as

North Adams man heldfollowing a chase andarrest for multiple charges

A 38-year-old North Adamsman who was arrested forallegedly breaking into the Cam-pus Center women’s locker roomand going through bags willappear April 30 in NorthernBerkshire Court.

Richard W. Beliveau of 89Bracewell Avenue was arrested byNorth Adams Police on Wednes-day, April 7, and charged with dis-orderly conduct. Campus Policecharged Beliveau with breakingand entering in the daytime,along with assault and battery ona student.

Beliveau, a level three sexoffender, was convicted in July1996 for the indecent assult andbattery on a child under 14 yearsof age and the rape and abuse ofchild, according to the Family

Public Safety received a callabout a man going through bagsin the women’s locker room onthe ground floor of the AmslerCampus Center at about 4:45 p.m.Members of the women’s softballteam informed Campus Policethat when they interrupted him,he fled on foot.

Campus Police notified theNorth Adams Police Departmentthat the suspect had took offheaded up Ashland Street. Fourunits from the NAPD were dis-patched to Ashland Street.

After just a few months local restaurant, LosAmigos’ Burritos, shut down leaving nothing but ablue building and a sign reading,“No Taco Tuesday.”

But North Adams resident and potential restau-rateur Cynthia Cottrell hopes to change that byopening Adam’s Ribs and More in that location.

315 Ashland St. was built in 1900 as a residence,but it has been a popular spot for local businesses foryears, with mixed success. The building, owned byRansford Properties for the last eight years, has been

home to, a bagel shop, a hot dog place, Pizza King,and then Los Amigos’ Burritos. Rasford Propertiesowner, Charles Ransford remarked that the hot dogrestaurant had been successful, but was not lucrativeenough for the owner to stay open.

“It was uphill battle, [against Jack’s Hot DogStand,]” he added.

As for Pizza King and Los Amigos, Ransford saidthat the owners fell behind on rent and couldn’t payfor suppliers either. He mentioned that it was ashame because both establishments had good food.
