Cared for by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart
at a glance
In a nutshell The three temptations Jesus faces all focus upon the nature of his mission and ministry. The first temptation is to miraculously feed himself - is his ministry to be about himself or others? The second is to take power and authority over the world - to fulfil the human expectations of what a Messiah ought to be or fulfil God’s plan of service, rather than domination? The third temptation is about grandstanding - to make a spectacular declaration of his arrival or to minister to the lowly and reveal himself in that way?

“Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and
was led by the Spirit through the wilderness.” At the beginning of Lent we are presented with the familiar text of the temptation of Jesus. Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Holy Spirit, moves into new territory. Having been prepared by his thirty or so years of life and obedience to God’s word, he recognizes the Spirit pushing him and encouraging him to step out into a new space. This new space will be challenging but ultimately rewarding. The wilderness is a place where there a few signposts: the terrain is often monotonous and difficult to navigate. This is serious stuff, requiring commitment and spiritual preparation. In this difficult space of the barren wilderness, all of Jesus’ life experience and his relationship and knowledge of God are put to the test. Jesus is being sharpened and honed for the short and trying public ministry which lies ahead. Jesus encounters the old adversary, the devil, head-on. Tempted to misuse his power, Jesus has to think on his feet and be resolute in standing up against the father of lies. Worship of God alone; not putting God to the test: being satisfied solely with the bread of God’s word - these are the fundamental lessons that Jesus has learnt and will stand him in good stead for the future. Because Jesus is strong in these areas, the devil has no way in and leaves him. This is the first Sunday of Lent and so we have the opportunity once again to enter into the wilderness space that the Church opens up for us in her liturgical calendar. This a grace-filled season where we can be led by the Holy Spirit to move out of our comfort zone and grow in our awareness of God’s goodness and God’s constant help. Lent, which will lead us to renew our baptismal promises in forty days, gives us the chance to be adventurous and try something new.
