Welcome to our March 2016 Newsletter

It is good to see participation in all our activities growing. For the 7 months to 31 January 2016, Balwyn Evergreen attendances are up 10.5% on the same period last year. Within these numbers Exercise Programs are up 21%; well-done Leonie and her team of instructors.

Over the next two months our two newer Buses are being sent out for new signage that tells the public what we do. The first bus will be completed by 1 March. See below for the new design; looks fantastic.

This month we welcome George Skandalellis and his team at back to sleep located at 313 -315 Whitehorse Road Balwyn to Balwyn Evergreen as a provider of benefits to our members. back to sleep provides expert knowledge on mattresses, pillows and sleeping products that will help you “sleep better, live better” for life. See page 8 for member benefits. Over the next 3 months we plan to have in place arrangements with local traders in Balwyn that will provide benefits to our members. If you have not taken out Balwyn Evergreen membership, please consider the many benefits and discuss with Penny at the front office.

Promoting an inclusive community, treating clients, carers & families and those from culturally diverse backgrounds with equality, respect and dignity.

Aims to assist older people and people with disabilities, to keep, maintain or acquire a companion animal. We have fantastic volunteers who will come to your house. They will assist with, or carry out pet care which may include:

Walking your dog Transport to the vet Feeding Grooming Washing Administering medication Cleaning bedding, cages or kitty litter trays. Foster care

Who can apply: If you are living in the City of Boroondara and are older, or have a disability and need assistance to continue living independently with your pet, then you can apply to the Companion Animal Volunteer Support (CAVS) program for help. The service is free but a yearly membership fee is applicable.

How can you apply: Call 9836 9681 if you’d like assistance with your pet.

Companion Animal Volunteer Support Program

No Falls Exercise Program

This is a 15 week program that includes strengthening, stretching and Balance components. It is run by a No Falls Exer-cise leader and skilled assistants. It is non strenuous and designed for those not accustomed to exercise. The pro-gram is very effective in helping you lower your risk of falling. All participants will complete a balance assessment at the start and end of the Program. You also need to meet the eli-gibility requirements for the Program. If you are interested in putting your name down contact Leonie or Brenda on 9836 9681.

Active Living Program at Balwyn

Balwyn Historical Society

EVENTS

On Thursday and Friday from 10.30 -3.00pm we run an ‘Active Living Program’. This program, funded by the Department of Health, is for frailer members of the com-munity . There are varied and interesting activities offered, it includes an exercise component, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. The afternoon could include music, guest speak-er, art or craft, word games and much more. If you are interested or know of someone who might like to come please ring Brenda on 9836 9681.

Every Friday we have a Podiatrist available at Evergreen. To make a booking please call the office on 9836 9681. Cost is $40.00 for Evergreen members or $50.00 a session for a non-member. There is a $20.00 fee for failure to notify us if you have to cancel an appointment.

Every Wednesday there is a community lunch at Evergreen. Numbers of attendees range between 30 to 50. We have special lunches or BBQ’s during the year as well. There is a concert in the afternoon followed by afternoon tea. If that doesn’t appeal you can come in for an exercise session and morning tea. We have art groups running in the afternoon as well! It was built in 1874 as the home of Max and Kate Schramm and incorporates Max Schramm's schoolroom. In 1971, when Doncaster Road was to be widened, the building was dismantled and relocated to the site of the original Lutheran Church building in Victoria Street.
