It is an absolute pleasure to, fourteen editions later, be jotting down an opening for our fifteenth online group magazine. The amount of time and creativity put into each and every single edition is quantified in the growing anticipation for the next issue.

An African saying goes “wathinta abafazi wathintha imbokodo” which directly translated means “you strike women, you strike a rock”, this is most relevant as we wind down the month of August which is dubbed women’s month. No less than 60% of our staff constitutes of women and we greatly appreciate with outmost acknowledgement the immense value they add.

Flashing back over the past few weeks on the events calendar a particularly memorable event (which is an evident example of how much more The Aleit Group has to offer), was the Springbok Engagement Session hosted in Cape Town. In true Aleit style the event was flawlessly executed with great distinction. We are now counting down to the Gauteng leg to be hosted at the magnificent Shine Studios in Braamfontein. On that Gauteng note, I welcome Lindi van Heerden and Johan Taute who opted to give up the Cape Town coastal life for the buzzing, fast pace of Jozi. We are also looking forward to moving into our new workspace in Midrand at the end of the month.

Numerous exciting events lined up, as the mercury levels are starting to soar, welcoming the summer season. The annually held Champagne Festival will be taking place at Summerplace in Johannesburg in September and without any bragging, it’s bound to be out of this world…

So relax, take a back seat and indulge in this edition flashing back on the past month’s happenings.

THE OPENING Fifteenth Edition – September 2012

Kind Regards,

Thabo Matlhako - Director - The Aleit Group

How did you come to be an Accountant at The Aleit Group? Every business revolves around capital and cash - I like to make accounting practical for those I work with. Accounting can be kind of fun and functional; it’s an important part of any business. I like to work with people and explain how everyday accounting works – the applicable side. That’s the main reason I got into accounting in fact. Every business sets out to make money but it’s how you make the money that is important. Within The Group I have the opportunity to work with diverse people on a daily basis which makes every day and exciting challenge!

So you lecture the 3rd year students at the Aleit Academy – did you ever think you were going to be a lecturer?

Growing up with parents who are accounting teachers both seem to be in my blood!! Its so refreshing to work with the students! It’s quite a mission to teach them accounting though as it’s not really what they signed up for, more what they have to do... I keep classes quite hands on – they really keep me grounded with their questions, just when you think you have all the answers!!!

You are a dog lover who has a soft spot for the SPCA, tell us more...

After our first visit as The Aleit Group to the Animal Welfare in Stellenbosch on Mandela Day in 2011, I was hooked. I saw Mogi a mile away and just had to have him! They say a dog is man’s best friend and it’s so true. Literally a year later when we went

MARILIE SNYMANMarilie is the Group Accountant for The Aleit Group – can you believe it!! Marilie is not the typical white collar accountant, she is constantly thinking outside the box and exploring new creative possibilities. Marilie loves to be surrounded by energetic, creative and inspired people. She unceasingly strives to be professional in her position - integrity is the one characteristic she thinks no one can lack as an employee.

again, I decided that Mogi needed a friend – welcome Tuffi! Not that I wasn’t planning another dog since we got Mogi. My husband Ian thought Tuffi was a little dog until I made him go and fetch Tuffi and he couldn’t fit in the backseat at 2 months old!!! Tuffi is going to be a beast... But he is so gorgeous! Both dogs are SPCA pavement specials – Mogi is a true mongrel (hence his name) but has some fox terrior in him while Tuffi has clear black Labrador traits. They are my children!

What is a day in the life of The Group Accountant like?

Always starts with a BIG cup of coffee and being at the office before anyone else so I can hit my emails without interruption. By the time the rest of the team come in I have averted a few crises and am happily on my way to a good day! Banking, transaction processing, statements, invoices, meeting with coordinators on events and weddings they are running and mostly a lot of interaction between all the entities of the Aleit Group. Busy, even hectic but I love it! This is such a hectic, focus job, what do you do to relax? (if you have time!!)

I try to get to the gym as much as I can to work off some stress on the bicycles and I also love to walk my dogs. On weekends my husband Ian and I ride a tandem bike with friends which is always fun! We are massive rugby fans as well and of course a big braai as often as possible goes hand and hand with that. My ultimate relaxing time is when Ian and I go for a walk on the beach and get am ice cream – heaven!! I love spending time with my best friend in the world, who is also my twin – Anemie!

Rustenberg Wine Estate in Stellenbosch was the natural choice for the intimate celebration amongst fifty close friends and family. What a whimsical magical wedding! There were so many unique touches – we just adored the fact that there were no floral arrangements on the tables, only candles… all flowers were suspended above the tables. From the stage at the ceremony that was specifically designed for them, to the giant letters on the lawn which invited the guests to be seated for dinner, there was nothing that could hold the celebrations back… not even the imminent rainy weather! We are completely in love with Caitrin and Johan’s ceremony ‘stage’. A first for The Aleit Group and Rustenberg Estate, Presentation Staging particularly designed the suspended platform for the Koi pond on this beautiful wine farm. And it was exactly what the couple envisioned for their ceremony… being in the centre of the pond, surrounded by their loved ones, sealing their vows. The ceremony was a Ceremony / Pre-dinner drinks combination. Guests were seated on four raised lounge pockets around the centre floating stage. The ceremony music was conducted by a non traditional Jamaican Steel Drum Band. We were pleasantly surprised with how well it complemented the setting. As soon as Caitrin and Johan were instructed to kiss, the music livened up, waitrons served bubbly and Guinness from the “Caitrin and Johan Guinness on Tap Bar”, turning the ceremony setting in to a lively pre-dinner setting immediately. And the Guinness was a great hit amongst the Irish family! From Gustaaf Boshoff at Stir Food: “This venue nestled at the base of the Simonsberg Mountains was truly stunning. With flowers suspended above the tables and so many other unique touches, the menu we designed reflected the couple’s unique style and love of food. This family sure knows their food and that was clear in the menu design.

The menu was extensive and included canapés as well as a braai station, adding great atmosphere, and a beautifully inspired Asian bowl food item. The gorgeous dinner menu started off with a seafood papillon cut open in front of the guests; followed by the waitrons pouring the most delicious lobster bisque in the papillon pockets. We where so happy to finally serve something else than the all too safe fillet for main course. The guests where treated to an Assiette of Duck, this was a massive hit. All of these delicacies were finished off with the most delectable and creative dessert canapés served on the dance floor. A wedding for a gorgeous couple where the result had to be a celebration of love and everything the guests love. The number one rule for a successful wedding.

How did you experience your wedding day?

It was just sensational. Aleit, Chanel and their team helped us to create the most magical day, it felt like we were floating.

How did you meet?

We have known each other since we were kids as we went to the same Primary School and Mike has always been friends with my brother. It was only in high school though that our relationship developed into a friendship and later a romance. Ten years later we are married!

Your best moment of the day?

So clichéd, but there are so many. Walking down the aisle and seeing Mike’s smile, standing against the backdrop of the Stellenbosch mountains with our family and friends and marrying my best friend.

Something nice about us.

Again, probably clichéd, but there are too many wonderful things about Aleit, Chanel and their team. I’m sure they experienced us as some kind of stalkers, but they honestly felt like our friends throughout the process. Day or night, they were available, always open to helping to create our day into something magical. Their commitment and passion is inspirational.

Tell us more about the honeymoon.

Mike booked the honeymoon and managed to keep it a surprise until we went through customs at the airport. We had three weeks together and went to South America. He planned it that the first week was absolute relaxation, the second, we ventured out a little more and finally the last week was filled with activity. Our first stop was Brazil, a beautiful place in Florianópolis called Ponta dos Ganchos, a remote island in the middle of nowhere.

The second week was just outside of Rio at a coastal town called Búzios. It looks like a small Knysna. The third week was spent in Rio on Ipanema Beach and the last few days we were in Buenos Aires in Argentina. It was the most incredible holiday, just the two of us.

Advice to other couples tying the knot soon.

Don’t take anything too seriously, enjoy every moment and don’t forget what the day is about. Don’t get caught up in conflict or nonsense and always trust The Aleit Group. They are amazing at what they do.

JUDITH & BARTWEBERSBURG WINE ESTATE

How did you experience your wedding day? Our wedding day was so much better than we ever could have imagined. Everyone flew in from The Netherlands, which made us feel so special. Also because everyone was on vacation, the atmosphere was just as we had hoped: very relaxed. There was absolutely no stress, not even when our minister arrived two hours later than scheduled. The massage and Champagne at Delaire Graff in the morning might have helped with that… We enjoyed every second of it so much and sometimes just looked around and were amazed by our own wedding! We felt so much love and had nonstop fun. Even the ceremony was laid back and informal, but still emotional. Because we were only with our closest friends and family, everything felt intimate, warm and comfortable.

How did you meet?

We met in high school when we were around 13 years old. When we turned 15, we were already dating for three months! We always had a connection from the day we met. In later years, even if we hadn’t seen each other for a while, we immediately felt that connection again. When we were 20 we ran into each other at university. Bart was sitting on a bench where I was supposed to meet friends. We started talking and exchanged numbers. Two weeks later we went on a date and have been together ever since. Almost every day for already 12 years. As Bart said during the ceremony: we want to grow old, fat and ugly together!

Your best moment of the day?

We already loved our pre-wedding “braai” and drinks at the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving Club, but on the wedding day there were so many moments we can’t pick just one: Massages and Champagne at Delaire Graff in the morning; getting my hair and makeup done by Sebastine Pepler with all the time in the world and

WEDDINGS // 23

good music playing; getting dressed with the moms there helping with the shoes; seeing each other at the beginning of the ceremony; Bart’s sweet speech; the song (“Got Me Good”) that was sung during the ceremony by Dutch singer, Celine Cairo; the amazing dinner and speeches; standing together at the patio watching with tears of happiness (mainly Bart) at all our guests at the table and the gorgeous surroundings (every little detail was chosen together and it was so nice that we recognized everything we had asked for); and the moment when the DJ upped the music and played “I Follow Rivers” by Lykke Li and everyone at the dinner table stood up, danced and the party began. Also a great moment was coming back to our room in the middle of the night to find that our friends had decorated every corner and centimeter of it.

Something nice about us.

It was amazing to work with Aleit (Chanel and Tony mainly)! The team helped us really understood that we did not want anything too “wedding”; we wanted a party and just an unforgettable day for both of us and every guest. This is what we got and much more. They were also so patient with us. We had a clear vision of what we didn’t want and, not being wedding fanatics, we were searching a bit for what we did want, so it took probably a couple of thousand emails to arrange the wedding. Obviously, with us living in Amsterdam, it wasn’t that easy to sit down and discuss what we wanted. Almost everything went via email. It must have driven them crazy, but we never noticed anything. Having our Aleit team at the wedding also made it more relaxed since we didn’t have to think or worry about anything; everything was completely taken care off. We would recommend it to everyone!

Page 24: Aleit Group Magazine Fifteenth Edition

Tell us more about the honeymoon.

Being in South Africa for a month in total was already sort of a honeymoon, so we decided not to book anything upfront. We wanted to take it day by day and see what we feel like and spend more time with our guests on the days after the wedding. After a week of extending our wedding vibe, we decided we wanted some alone time before returning home, so we booked a last minute trip to Garonga Safari Camp. An amazing place!

Advice to other couples tying the knot soon.

Relax, take it easy, enjoy every second and don’t be bothered by what anyone else might think or expect. This is your day, so it should reflect you and no one else. Remember why you are getting married; it’s about loving each other and then nothing can go wrong, just enjoy! This day is about both of you so organize it together. It was so amazing that we both chose all the décor, drinks, food, music and other details which made the road to the wedding already special and it’s so cool then to recognize everything on the day itself. Another tip: bring a camera and have your friends film bits and pieces. As a gift, we received a camera during dinner with six hours of film. We never even noticed the filming! Our friends continued to film the rest of the days and now we have such fun memories of everything. Having it filmed by friends also makes the film more laidback! We are so happy that, next to the brilliant photographs by Lizelle Lotter, we also have a movie.

Page 27: Aleit Group Magazine Fifteenth Edition

“Hier kom die Bokke, hier kom die Bokke...!” This was the tune being hummed in unison by the Aleit Group as the Team of Millions arrived in their suped up bus at The Look Out for the first of two engagement sessions with the public. These massive men made their way into the exquisitely lit venue to gaping men and women alike just desperate for a chat with our Springbok men in green and gold. Even the Bokke, dressed in blushing pink shirts, were slightly taken aback at the opulent yet inviting and comfortable setting for their dinner.

Lets start at the very beginning... Aleit Events were tasked with these two events and we began working out our game plan immediately. The first event in was Cape Town and the second in Johannesburg a month later. Our thoughts obviously leaned towards green and gold but we decided to stick with grass green with a base palette of crisp whites and light wooden elements. The theme needed to ooze masculinity with the beauty that is an Aleit Event.

The Look Out was a clear choice and with the green and ambient lighting on the night we knew we had made the right decision... With all 230 guests inside the venue and enjoying a perfectly made Mojito we began what was to be a fantastic evening! Each 10 seater table was graced with the presence of a Springbok player who was to be there all evening to field questions on the following week’s game or their new coach - no subject was off limits... Matthew Pierce was the eloquent MC for the evening and with his personal knowledge of the game as well as the players being a SuperSport commentator and presenter, he was the perfect host.

Stir Food prepared the three course meal and lived up to their fabulous reputation by presenting not only beautifully arranged food but perfectly suited the evening. They even made sure that the Bokke got a larger portion of protein!

After the ample main meal, Matthew invited new coach Heyneke Meyer on stage for a little chat. Thereafter Brian Habana, Jean de Villiers and Pat Lambie were up for a chat about the in’s and out’s of Bokke tradition. This was fantastic as we heard about the funny stories on their last trips and who listens to what on their i-Pods as well as who has special seats on the Bus!

Before the evening could wind down, Joseph Clarke was on stage to give a fantastic performance livening up the night fully! Joseph, a renowned South African performer regaled some of the most popular Queen hits as well as some Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé renditions.

As the Bokke made their way back to the bus, stopping to sign jerseys and pose for a quick Polaroid, the guests were asked to record a personal message for them to be played to the Bokke at a later date. So amid words of praise and encouragement the Bokke left us as well as guests speechless in their wake... Until the next engagement session – for us and a new lucky group of invited guests... But we will keep you updated of course...

JAN KRIEL ANNUALWINE AUCTIONLast year, our 3rd years from The Aleit Academy were given the opportunity to arrange the prestigious Jan Kriel Wine Auction Dinner. It was so successful that we decided to take it on another year running and, as tradition stands, our current 3rd years took up the challenge with a smile! Meagan Bridger, Kirsty Hartmann and Marinda de Bruin were chosen to manage the project.

The Jan Kriel Wine Auction Dinner takes place every year in the School Hall of Jan Kriel School in Kuilsrivier. Guests are invited to join in an evening of elegance and bid on only the best wines on auction, where the proceeds from the evening go to the Jan Kriel School. The evening would normally be called a fundraiser, but they like to call it a family! This event is seen as a priority on the social calendar and many guests find themselves returning year upon year. This event is about family and the community coming together to change lives and make a difference.

Set up started the day before the event with a tent being set-up at the entrance of the school, as well as the tables inside the school hall being set up while fairy lights were hung from the ceiling creating an intimate atmosphere and giving the cold school hall that warm glow. Every few minutes, especially between periods, the students as well as the teachers would sneak an excited peek to catch a glimpse of what was happening inside the their familiar School Hall.By the afternoon, the clear tiffany chairs arrived

and did that make a statement as every staff member that walked past had to look twice or even come in and touch them….Some thought it was made out of glass or even sculpted ice. The day of the special event florists arrived on site to deliver their flowers as each one had an allocated table giving the room an eclectic yet elegant feel. Napkins were folded, glassware and cutlery straightened and more importantly the “Pop up Museum” was set up. Memorable items from ancient type writers to the aluminum school bowls the hostel children used to use were set out on display. The staff and students alike were amazed at the items on display.

The evening started with registration and guests were encouraged to walk through the museum while sipping on Muscadel. As dinner approached Dr. Fanie (SJ) Herholdt who was the MC rang an old school hand bell and a song called the “Tribute” was played while the doors were opened into the dining area. As the guests entered, the room was filled with smoke and blue mood lighting, layered with fairy lights as a roof and candles dressed the tables – breath was literally taken away...

By the time the auction came about guests were having a great time and it showed in the generous bids and donations made. We were once again blown away by the guest’s generosity and the bids reached the thousands! We can’t wait to see what The Aleit Academy 3rd years of 2013 produce when they are handed the challenge…

PAINTBALL TEAMBUILDING“Team building is a process that develops cooperation and teamwork within a work unit. To constitute an effective team, its members must share a common goal, have respect for each other, and be motivated to use the strengths of each member to achieve their objectives. Paintball is an extreme sport in which players compete, in teams or individually, to eliminate opponents by tagging them with paintballs propelled from a paintball gun.”

The Aleit Academy gingerly embarked on our very first team building inclusive of all 3 years... And what better way to build a team than by making them shoot at each other?? So on the 2nd of June The Aleit Academy was ready and set for their most extreme social bonding session EVER!

We arrived for our paintball session at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch with “Captain Mike” from Paintball Passion at the helm. We immediately got our game on as we entered paintball territory with chest protectors, face masks, camo jackets and of course... face paint! I would be lying if I said we were not shaking in our boots – some girls were scared within an inch of their lives! After a quick pep talk and explanation of the rules, we were split into two groups by Captain Mike and off we went! Except for shots fired, you could only hear screams of excitement and obvious pain sprinkled with a few choice four letter words that would only be acceptable to Jack Parow; who was a guest at one of our most recent events...

Excitement levels were kept high as “Captain Mike” encouraged everyone by running along with us and telling us where to go, what to do and how to not get shot!

Photographer - Paintball Passion

Page 38: Aleit Group Magazine Fifteenth Edition
Page 39: Aleit Group Magazine Fifteenth Edition

This encouraged some students to get seriously competitive and the leaders in each group began to shine! Not even fifteen minutes into the game and all the students were fearlessly stalking each other without a glimmer of trepidation!

The most daunting bit was asking one of your fellow team members to “tag you” after you had been shot in order to get back in to the game – ask someone to shoot you with a paintball at close range? Surely not! But yes, it came down to actually asking someone to shoot you from as close to only 3 metres in order to stay in the game… And boy it hurt like hell!

So with adrenalin pumping, breath short and legs tired, we dragged our filthy ourselves to a local hang out in Stellenbosch for a well deserved pizza and an even more deserved cold beer. Truly one of the best bonding sessions we have ever had with the students and we can’t wait for the next round!

Shake and Serve is a dynamic company that offers a mobile bar service and a full range of staff for any event across the Western Cape. From cocktails and mocktails, to waitrons and bartenders, as well as bar and floor managers, Shake and Serve is all about flawless service, smart presentation and innovative thinking.

The team at Shake and Serve has decided to take our readers on a tour, from what happens in front of the bar, to the action behind the bar.

As many of us have spent a reasonable amount of time in front of the bar, we can all agree that presentation is the very first thing that catches our eyes. Sleek, modern designs and a handsome bartender add that extra flair to just about any event. “It is quite obvious, that within the event industry, a bar service is of vital importance! May it be cocktails or non-alcoholic beverages, a guest will always feel more comfortable with a drink in his or her hand – to keep themselves hydrated of course!” says Bruce, the main man behind Shake and Serve. As professionals in this industry, we take our jobs quite serious… seriously! We believe that having a sound knowledge of all beverages and liquors, techniques and ingredients distinguishes a normal bar service to that of a quality package.

When looking for a bar service, keep in mind its credentials and possible long term affiliations. Customer preferences and feedback is what allows us to work along the top event coordination companies, such as The Aleit Group.

Pleasing the taste buds

Bartending is a great job, but it’s nowhere near the phenomenon that movies would have you believe. It takes a lot of practice to become the ultimate bartender; we’re talking about approachability, good communication, efficiency, knowledgeablility, problem-solving and most important, creativity. Bottom line is that it takes class, style, patience and an excellent attitude.

Apart from the skills, we ask ourselves, what makes a good drink? “The most common drink in the Western Cape has to be the mojito. It’s trendy, easy to make, available in different versions and can be a winter warmer or a refreshing summer sensation” mentions Bruce. “Most people drink with their eyes first!”

Vibrant flavours, fresh ingredients, visual masterpiece and passion is what Shake and Serve has got in store for the upcoming summer season. Stick around and learn more on how to shake things up at an event! “I quite fancy a mojito right about now, don’t you?” says Bruce as he makes his way to the bar.

JEWEL IN THE HEART OF THE HELDERBERGIn 1948 Henry Morton built Morton Manor, a Georgian home surrounded by 19 hectares of farmland, for his wife, Violet. The house, with its breathtaking views of the Helderberg Basin, False Bay and Table Mountain, is situated near the base of Schapenberg Mountain, overlooking vineyards and orchards. The house, together with the surrounding farms, forms part of the Golden Triangle, a triad of famous farms which include Vergelegen, Morgenster and Lourensford.

Today H.V. Morton is remembered as one of the greatest and most erudite travel writers and journalists of the century who bore witness to some of the most defining moments of the 20th century. His legacy is preserved at Morton Manor and admirers and patrons of his writing still visit the house to pay homage to him. The present owner, who knew Mrs. Morton personally, has restored the property, retaining all the original furnishings and most of Morton’s memorabilia.

This historic home has opened its doors to the public for the hosting of exclusive weddings, events and conferences, such as the birthday of Trevor Immelman (featured in our previous magazine edition 14). The beautiful lawns and veranda with its authentic Italian garden can be utilized for summer events and can accommodate up to 80 guests.

I love to eat... Who doesn’t? And because food is one of my serious passions, I thought it well to share with you my favourite restaurants, underground eateries, supper clubs and take- away joints in Cape Town.

I would obviously have to start with my very own Slip-pery Spoon… Conceptual dining at its best! Slippery Spoon is a pop up restaurant that literally “pops up” in any random or obscure place. I then design the menu around any theme to my liking which is fantastic for me as thinking-out-of-the-box is my very long middle name. Previous themes include “The Ten Command-ments”, “Plastic Fantastic”, “Paper”, “White on White”, “West Coast Living” and the most recent “Food flash and Wine”. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for up and coming events as trust me, you do not want to miss the next one: http://www.facebook.com/slippery-spoonpopuprestaurant

Another wonderful notion was created by two very close friends of mine – It’s called Supper Lounge. Sup-per clubs are a massive trend all over the world right now and this one is right on par. They host the most spectacular dinner events available to anybody keen to attend. A wonderful and affordable way to meet new people and to enjoy gorgeous home made food prepared by interesting people. Highly recommended by me so check it out and hopefully you get a seat: www.supperlounge.com

Also have a look at the foodie festival called Toffie Food: www.toffie.co.za. They continuously have a few foodie happenings that are essential to attend.

Cape Town has so much to offer and living in Cape Town does not help my diet at all! I’m regularly asked what my favourite restaurant in Cape Town is and my response is always:

“I do NOT have a favourite restaurant, but rather fa-vourite meals”. So here goes:

• Ethiopian Pancake Feast called Injera available at the African Woman’s Market in Long Street. This must be some of the best flavour combina tions I have ever had.

TO END IT OFF• The Lamb Dosa at Masala Dosa in Long Street is one of my biggest treats every month.• One can’t miss “The Bomb” at Willoughby’s in the V & A Waterfront.

• The Korean Hot Pot Bibimbap should be on any body’s bucket list. Available at Galbi, the Korean Braai Restaurant in Long Street.

• I am sorry to say, but Saigon in Kloof Street still makes the best Dim Sum in Cape Town.

• The Mini Lamb Burgers at Orphanage in Bree Street.

• The Truffle Fries at Loading Bay on Hudson Street in De Waterkant.

• The Koeksisters sold in the Mc Donalds Parking Lot at N1 City.

• The best sauce I have ever tasted in my life is the Black Pepper and Truffle Café au Lait from The Pot Luck Club in The Old Biscuit Mill.

• The Lamb Pita’s at Eastern Food Bazaar In Long Market Street in the City Bowl.

• The Prego Rolls at Dias Tavern in Caledon Street.

• The Slap Chips at Roxy’s Café in Dunkley Square in Gardens.

• The Burgers at Dogs Bolloks in Roodehek Road in Gardens.

• The Smoked Jalapeno Poppers at El Buro in Green Point.

• And last but not least The Egg and Bacon Tarts from Bread, Milk and Honey on Spin Street.

Happy Eating Folks.
