Students with poor attendance in Elementary School are more likely to be truant in middle school and high school
-
School nonattendance is a problem that affects students, families and the community. Not only are students with poor attendance less likely to do well in school, they are more likely to drop out of school all together, have a lower self-esteem and are less likely to find good jobs in the future. When children are not in school, they are also more likely to get involved in illegal activities in the community.

August 26, 2005
Dear Parents,
Walls are being painted and posters are being hung! The Harman Staff is looking forward to a great year in our new setting! School opens for business on Wednesday, August 31st and we cant wait to get the show rolling! We are hopeful that all of our students will have the opportunity to shine this year and it is for that reason that I am writing to you today. I am sure that you would agree that daily attendance is essential for school success. It is our hope that you will work with us to achieve improved attendance this school year.
Daily attendance is particularly important at Harman due to our Open Court Reading Program and Saxon Math Program. When students are absent they are missing IMPORTANT daily instruction that cannot be sent home as make-up work.
The good news is that you can help! Make sure you send your child to school every day on time unless it is medically necessary to keep them home. Make sure your kids are getting enough rest and are ready for school in time to walk or catch the bus. We look forward to continuing our partnership with you to ensure your childrens success in school. If you foresee any problems with your childs attendance this year, please call me; I look forward to being able to help!
Sincerely,
Amy Beller, LCSW-C

Send your children to school every day on time!
Children will often say their tummy hurts in order to stay home and play. Try to encourage your children to go to school unless they are really sick (has a temperature, vomiting, diarrhea etc.). By encouraging your child to attend school even when they feel a little sick, you are telling them, School is important and I value your education.
If your child is sick, send a note to school the following school day!
When your child is ill, please let the teacher know in writing why your child did not attend school. Not only does this allow the teacher to consider the absence excused, it also communicates to your child that you think it is important to go to school. When we send a note asking a teacher to excuse an absence we are telling our children that missing school is a big deal.
Tell your children that you think that school is important!
Do not assume that your children know that you care about attendance. Tell them that it is important to go to school every day. Of course, actions speak louder than words, when we tell our children we value school, we should also make sure that they get to school every day unless they are sick.
Start good attendance habits now!
Attendance in elementary school sets the stage for future school attendance. Students who are truant in elementary school are more likely to be truant in middle school and high school (leading to dropping out of school) where as students who have good attendance habits as youngsters are more likely to attend school regularly in later grades!
