How much carbon dioxide is produced by goods
or activities and services depends on: energy needed to make a product
energy needed to transport the product
energy needed to use a product or do an activity
energy needed to dispose of a product.

Carbon dioxide isreleased into the atmosphere
when we burn oil, coal andgas to get useful energy.
Research showsthat it is better for
the environment whenpeople spend less moneyon manufactured goods
and more money onactivities and
services.

Discuss and agree which of these things are goodsand which areactivities or services. Put a tick in the box on the items you think are goods.
Put the pictures in rank order. Put number 1 in the circle next to the picture youthink would lead to the most carbon dioxide being produced and number 6 nextto the picture you think will lead to the least carbon dioxide being produced.

The figures for carbon dioxide produced are given as estimates. How much you usea product or how long you spend doing an activity can change the figures. Can youthink of any other reasons why the amount of carbon dioxide produced could vary?
The list shows that manufactured goods produce more carbon dioxide than theactivities and services. Would this always be true? Can you think of any exceptions?

Work as a team. In your team decide roles for each person, e.g. chair person, recorder, creative designer, critical friend.
Make a list of activities that you think would make great presents and also be
environmentally friendly. Use the Thinking Frame to help you decide on your top activity.
When you have decided on the top activity write down 5 plus points which could be used
to advertise this as a present. At least 2 of your points must explain how the activity could
be good for the environment.
I like the look of theseactivities. Id get loads out
of doing them!

Here are some
situations for you to
think about and
discuss. Why is each
one a dilemma? Talk about each dilemma
with a partner and thenwith the rest of yourteam.
Come up with as manyideas as you can to
make the dilemmasmaller or perhaps solvethe problem completely.
My granddadgives us lots of

We like to treat ourselvesto weekend breaks in
European cities but weare getting concernedabout the number of
flights we take.
I want to learn the flamencoguitar but the nearest teacher is
50 miles away. If I havea lesson every week I would
drive an extra 5,000 miles eachyear. That could produce a lot
of carbon dioxide!
My son and daughter live inAustralia. Theyve said they
want to pay for me to fly outand visit them for 2 weeks.I want the trip to be aseco-friendly as possible.
I love to getfashion shoes forChristmas and my
birthday but I have readthat making leatherproduces a lot of
carbon dioxide.

Choosing the environmentally friendly option. When making a choice between twodifferent things you need to think about the energy used to make and use each thing. Use yourown judgement to complete the table when choosing between two different things.
