The Hawaiian ChildSigned “G Hudson” l.l.Oil on board, sight size 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in. (8.9 x 6.4 cm),framed (in a shadow box).Condition: Not examined out of frame.
N.B. Grace Carpenter Hudson was a native Californian, bornin Ukiah in 1865. Her family lived in one of the few clustersof white settlers who inhabited an area largely dominated bylocal Native American tribes including the Pomos, a tribe thatshe would later devote a great deal of her artistic career toillustrating. Hudson taught painting in her hometown andalso became an accomplished illustrator for Sunset,Cosmopolitan and Western Field publications. In 1901, shemade a year-long visit to Hawaii where she completed twenty-six canvases of Hawaiian, Japanese, and Chinese children inthe capital city Honolulu and Hilo (located on the east coastof the Big Island). The work presented here is probably fromthis period. She then went on to accompany her husband, doctor turned ethnographer John Hudson, to the OklahomaTerritory where he would be studying the Pawnee Indians.Unfortunately while they were away from their Ukiah home, the earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed a great deal of herwork as well as a vast number of Indian artifacts the couplehad amassed during their previous excursions. Hudsonpainted actively in Ukiah until her death in 1937. Thepainter, who never had children, left her remaining paintingsand artifacts to her husband’s nephew, Mark Carpenter, whosoon after her death turned the couple’s estate into amuseum.
