April’s theme is Now Showing at the Atomic Cafe: Films of the Cold War

4/10 The Front(1976 / 95 min. / Rated PG)

The time is the early 1950s. Several TV writers who are being blacklisted for their allegedly leftist political views arrange to have a nonpolitical cashier (Woody Allen) “front” their scripts. The film’s director (Martin Ritt) and most members of the cast, including Zero Mostel and Herschel Bernardi, actually WERE blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

Zac Unger moved with his wife and children from Oakland to frigid and the “polar bear capital of the world.” His book Never Look a Polar Bear in the Eye is a spirited and often humorous account of his family’s time in this unique place.
