The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Project is a federally recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2007 by Playwright, Dee Jae Cox and Songwriter, Michele Weiss. It is dedicated to education, support, promo-tion, advocacy and the production of performance projects that are of interest and benefit to women. We are committed to gender parity in the arts and media.
The LAWTP was designed to increase opportunities for women in the performing arts, as well as providing and supporting performances and projects that represent women and their perspectives on a broader scale.

Dear LA Women’s Theatre Project Patrons:
Theater was first created by the ancient Greeks and has remained a vital part of our culture, our communities and our lives. It has influenced our ideas, our religion, our society, our politics and our governments. It has survived persecu-tion and irreverence to stand as a vital piece of contemporary culture. It’s more than entertainment; it provides education, a voice and a perspective on so many levels and about so many subjects.
That is why when we acknowledge the statistics of the 21st Century, over 2500 years after the Greeks began their performances in hillside Amphitheatres, and see that only 20% of the professionals working in theater, film, television and in the media, are women, not only do we realize the significant discrepancy in opportunities, but the serious loss and impact on our communities and culture, when so little of the perspectives and voices being heard, are female. It is our goal to work not only towards creating greater opportunities for women, but to ensure that women’s voices, perspectives and interests are presented in the performing arts and to our communities.
Take a look at what we have going on and then make a choice to be a part of something truly extraordinary.
We are a 501c3 Nonprofit. Your Donations, Advertising, Sponsorships and
Volunteer contributions are always welcome and appreciated! For more informaiton on how you can be involved, please contact us at
Thank you for your support.
Best Wishes,Dee Jae Cox & Michele WeissCo-FoundersThe Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Project

Fiscally Sponsored by The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Project
The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Project’s, TAKING THE HELM - Pro-duction Assistance Program was established in order to develop and support women in independent stage, film and event productions. The Program fulfills this mission by offering fiscal sponsorship to film, stage and event projects that meet the organi-zation’s criteria and mission. And by providing independent project Producers with valuable support. With only an estimated 20% of live productions and films being written and/or directed by women, it is crucial to develop support and assistance programs that will allow more women to helm Production projects of their own. These stage, film and media projects reflect The LA Women’s Theatre Project’s com-mitment to outreach and development of both emerging and established women writers, performers and directors in a broad spectrum of performing arts.
WHAT IS FISCAL SPONSORSHIP?Fiscal Sponsorship allows a project/production to apply for funding from organi-zations that require non-profit tax-exempt status. Non-profit status is required by many foundations, corporations and government agencies in order to be eligible for funding since many do no accept application proposals directly from individuals.
Additionally, 501(c)(3) status allows you to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions (both cash and in-kind) from individuals and businesses—a major incentive for individuals considering making a donation to your project.
As the fiscal sponsor, LAWTP acts as an umbrella organization for the project and accepts and administers donations/grants on behalf of the project. The LAWTP is legally responsible for the funds received on behalf of fiscally sponsored projects and must insure that the funds are used for charitable activities, as agreed upon be-tween the donor and recipient, and that the donor reporting requirements are met.
Fiscal sponsorship broadens the available avenues a project may pursue for funding and it allows for the increased opportunities for women writers, directors, perform-ers in film and stage. It does not mean that the LAWTP acts as a producer, fundrais-er, or in any way connected to the content or actual production of your project. Fis-cal Sponsorship provides projects, that are spearheaded by women and fall within our mission guidelines, the opportunity to operate and benefit as a nonprofit entity.
