This is a project firmly grounded in research. The
design is to find a good but not disturbing way to
activate the area. The project was done individually
and mainly focus on the pathway created both in
the forest and along the water.

Oppegård is the smallest municipality in Akershus and it is a green municipality. Since it is also in the suburb of Oslo and involved in the rapid urbanization, the transportation in Oppegård mainly depends on vehi-cles. However, the future plan and orientation is to use the cars to commute with the outside but travel without vehicles inside the area.
Another problem is that the municipality is facing the urbanization of the new center, Kolbotn, which has been built up in the last two years. With the development and densification, this place will be a really important node of Oppegård. The construction of infrastructure around should keep pace with other developments.
This project started from mapping of the target area, Oppegård municipality, with findings of both problems and opportunities, comes the proposal of a path system connecting Kolbotn and the closest station, Myrvoll.

In order to make the pathway both attractive to people and protective for nature, ecological patterns were fully taken into consideration. Forest type and quality were mapped according to GIS. Different species were also mapped and their seasonal changes were well studied: different views and spatial experience gener-ated are guiding the design of the pathway.
It is also interesting to combine the GIS analysis with actual space, one is from 头top to the ground while the other is from the bottom up.

The west side of the bridge is 5 meters above the water, so that it will not interfere with people skating in winter.

The project is aiming to find a way to turn the
boundaries brought by the unprecedented urban-
ization into a bond, to make the isolated streets
back to life. It was finished by a team with two oth-
ers, Zhewen Dai & Ziyi Zhang.
BOUNDARY & BOND
12
The metro Connect Jiading Town to the central Shanghai, consisting an essential part of the transportation system of the metropolis.
The moat Built in Song Dynasty and was well connected to the river which passes through the central town.
The East Gate StreetIn the same status with the West Gate Street, is now revitalized by the transformation into a commercial pedestrian.
West Gate Street, now is in the opposite condition to the East Gate Street, meeting with the decay and erosion.
Shanghai is undergoing unprecedented urbanization. Along with the over-sprawl-ing development came the decay and erosion of historical neighborhoods, which leaves depressing spaces between social classes.
JiadingLocated in the suburb of Shanghai. Now it is one of the districts of this metropolis.
the site
13
Ancient Current
Jiading town was thriving during the Ming and Qing Dynasty, with its two central markets, one in central city and one in west water gate. These old pictures show the prosperity in the middle 1990s. West Gate Street, with the rapid urbanization of Shanghai in recent decades, turned to dilapidated due
to its distance from city center, and is now mostly occupied by housing tenants of migrant workers with low income. River has become a boundary and the community has been gradually isolated from the context.
BoundaryBond
With the different fabrics and social classes, gener-ated the seam in the town. At the same time the seam has become the boundary between different communi-ties. In this case, seam and the river together composed the boundary between the old town and the newly built neighborhoods.
In order to turn the boundary into a bond and alter the situation, it is proposed to take full use of the open space, making the negative solid line into positive flow-ing linkage by discovering and offering space and possi-bility for activity and communication.
background
14
Activity point Demolished building Unoccupied space
Old buildings are squeezed and separated from the context of the city. More importantly, the identity of the site fade out along with the degradation of these old buildings.
Pathways between the dwellings are not fully used. In contrast, they turned out to be the negative space in the community, becoming obstacles for communication with outer neighborhoods.
Two of the three bridges on the river are manually interrupted due to the different social classes on the two sides. This situation made the West Gate Street a complete segregation.
The site was under the down-turn condition. Due to the isolated region and low attraction of the community, there is merely public activities or communication.
Buildings here are declining, some of them have been even demolished since they are rarely used or without any protection and repairing.

Revitalize accesses
Possibilities of activity & communication

After investigation and many interviews with the residents, some unused space were found. We have also discovered that people here have strong desires to communicate with the other neighborhoods. The deg-radation of the pathways is to a large extent because of a lack of public open space and facilities.
In order to repair this seam in the city, the existing space is fully used: three large vacant lots are turned into different kinds of markets and are linked by facil-itated pathways; communities on the two sides of the river are connected linear space to rise physical and emotional communication.
structure
16
Three markets of different strategies are imple-mented as an attempt to revitalize the community. One is a food market that is necessary for the local residents. One is a proposed craft and antique market in the site of a demolished elementary school. There is a tradi-tional popularity of antique exchange in Jiading town.
The third is a flower and bird market, another tradi-tional market. As the craft and antique market does, a flower and bird market will bring the poor people both incomes and a chance to communicate with people from outer blocks. It is targeted toward a larger resi-dential area to the west of the site.

The main street
18
The West Gate Street is currently the only activity space in the neighborhood. This sole public space gives the community an introversive character and precludes passengers from passing through.
To revitalize this main access, which to a large extent determines the prosperity of the community, trees and facilities are inserted in the street, making it a space where people will choose to stay but not pass by.

Due to the space limits and the need for activity, paths in the loops are designed to be multi-functional. Some of them are facilitated with, for example, game table and ping-pong tables.
As for the vacant yards, according to the financial consideration and tradition, some higher participatory and common activities are introduced in, as badminton and basketball, to attract people from nearby neighbor-hoods to utilize.

close to the west coast of Estonia. The goal is to
re-organize the central space and offer a comfort

The waiting place is considered a space both outdoor and indoor, for all weather conditions. Cafe is proposed as a gathering place for people in the village. Store is also integrated with the cafe to increase attraction. Now the only store in the village is hiding from the other parts of the place, according to the proposal, the relocated store will give much higher convenience as well.

build real connections among people by using the
virtual communication. Space, technology inte-
gration, and infrastructure are all considered and
combined. The project was conducted by two (with
Ziyi Zhang).

VILLAGE REAPPEARSThis is a part of the Master’s thesis. The project
consists of a comprehensive research on the histo-
ry and generation of VICs (Villages In the City) and
a design proposal for a specific site to illustrate an
alternative way of development other than the way
driven only by economy. The whole thesis was fin-
ished by two, with Xin Su as a partner.

Also known as Canton or Kwangchow, Guangzhou is the capital city and largest city of Guangdong province. It is also the third largest city in China, after Beijing and Shanghai. It is located very close to Hong Kong, with a 130 km distance. That has brought a lot of convenience and opportunities to Guangzhou.
VIC (Village In the city) is becoming one of the major problems caused by the rapid development.

A lot of villages were formed during the last 3 decades. Guangzhou has moved its city axis to the east and extend it to the end of Haizhu island. Haizhu island is now an important district and is facing massive changes brought by the coming development. There are also many different kinds of villages in the area. According to different characters and locations, these villages are facing both opportunities and challenges.

Village of Lijiao is the biggest one in Haizhu dis-trict, located at the southern end of the new axis. It has a history about 900 years. There are 13 ancestor temples respectively from Song Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, and Republic of China. It is reported that the whole village (about 1.5 million square meters) will be transformed in the next decade.

After interviews with the old in the village, it is claimed that almost all the asphalt roads in the vil-lage now were once waterways. The main canal was much wider before and was reduced to make room for the roads.
Many old people were not willing to talk about the past. Some said that it made them so sad to remem-ber the environment in the past while looking at the surroundings today. It is a shame that the life quality is lower than thirty years ago. Some also complained that it would be inconvenient and isolated to move to high-raised buildings.
