EPA Emission Standards
Current and Future
Diesel engine efficiency has improved tremendously since 1994.
Future regulations can not be met through engine efficiency improvements alone.
(GTS 2012) The overall goals of the July 2011 regulations are:
•Reduce C02 greenhouse gas emissions 7% - 20% from “large trucks” by 2017.
•Fuel Economy
• 3% improvement by 2014 as compared to 2010
• 5% improvement gain by 2017 as compared to 2014
• Unspecified improvements phasing in in 2020.
Proposed Federal
Fuel Economy and GHG Regulations
How will we get there ?
Shut off the engine… Battery & Energy Management becomes critical.
Announced Feb 18, 2014
(March 2015) NHTSA / EPA Follow-up to 2011 Regulations
•2014 - 2018 Truck Model Years
• Additional 20% reduction in GHG.
• Additional 20% reduction in fuel consumption
S.M.A.R.T. Systems
System Management And Reliability Technology
Truck fleets and transit agencies in Vanner’s markets have
historically been burdened with inefficiencies in their electrical
systems, absorbing higher maintenance costs, fuel costs, and
increased downtime.
Vanner’s is developing S.M.A.R.T. systems for our OEM and
aftermarket partners, based on Vanner’s patented Model Based
Battery Monitoring (MBBM™) technology, reducing maintenance
costs, reducing fuel consumption, and improving battery life and
overall electrical system performance.
Let’s look at some examples …
-Battery Current -Battery Voltage -Battery Temperature -Battery State Of Charge -Battery State of Health -Battery Time To Run -Prognostics -Diagnostics -J-1939 CAN Bus

Dynamic Regulation
•Patented technology, that provides the most accurate battery monitoring and
electrical system analysis. First and foremost, it is a manager of the battery.
- Batteries are “profiled” (discharged and charged through various temperature
ranges) then a virtual model (algorithm) is created to compare to.
- As the battery is charged, discharged, the State of Health (SOH) changes.
- The MBBM™ compares the current SOH to the profiled battery SOH, to
accurately calculate the auxiliary battery life as it ages.
- The MBBM™ compares the battery State-of-Charge (SOC) to the minimum
(customer specified) SOC for controlling loads. In idle-reduction systems the SOC is
used to auto-start the vehicle, or to notify the driver to start the vehicle, or remove
the loads.
What is MBBM™
Vanner Battery / Energy Management Model Based Battery Monitoring - MBBM™
Vanner’s MBBM™ assures that the auxiliary batteries stay at the optimum SOC
throughout the entire work cycle, optimizing no-idle run time and battery life.
-Accuracy… Accuracy… Accuracy !!!
-MBBM™ monitors battery SOC, not battery voltage.
-MBBM™ SOC monitoring eliminates the fuel wasting nuisance starts that voltage based
monitoring systems can create.
-MBBM™ SOH compensates for aging batteries to assure reliability.
- The MBBM™ J-1939 CAN Bus communication broadcasts auxiliary battery data,
enabling it to be captured for maintenance analysis.
- The J-1939 CAN Bus also provides the ability to communicate with on-board telemetry
systems for “real-time” system monitoring.

idleWATCH®II System Scalability
- Other systems have pre-determined battery size and AH rating. - Battery size and weight may be prohibitive due to GVW and available space. - Larger battery systems may be overkill to vocational application.
idleWATCH®II Battery(s)
-idleWATCH®II enables the installer the flexibility to use standard modeled batteries. -Batteries can be “right sized” to the vehicle's application and adjusted if required. -Batteries can be located to comply with GVW and space availability.
