    D. Dic onary Policy at IELI

    In the

    U.S.,

    good

    writers

    are

    not

    always

    good

    spellers;

    however,

    good writers are good checkers. This means that good writers understand that correct spelling is very important. In any paper, correct spelling is essen al. In fact, many people think that a person who makes many spelling mistakes is either uneducated or unintelligent.

    Students who want to be good writers must learn how to spell. They can do this best by paying close a en on to spelling as they read and write. To help students check their spelling, IELI allows the following resources on composi on tests:

    Levels Pre 1 and 1: A bilingual dic onary* or the spelling lists

    Level 2: A bilingual dic onary*

    Level 3 and 4: An English dic onary* that is not a learners dic onary

    Levels 5 and 6: Dic onaries are not allowed.

    *No addi onal composi on or grammar notes may be wri en in any dic onary. Electronic dic onaries or spellcheckers are not allowed.
