Hazardous Household Product Symbols

Each symbol above may be combined with one of the three severity symbols.

NFPA Hazard Ratings

•  Developed by the National Fire Protection Association.

•  Provides information regarding the hazards of a material as they relate to handling, fire prevention, exposure, and control.

NFPA Hazard Ratings

WHMIS •  This is a Canada wide system aimed at

reducing injuries and illness caused by exposure to hazardous materials.

•  The system covers all areas of work, and chemicals.

•  The key to this system is knowing and understanding the standardized labelling procedure.

Protective

Equipment

Class A: Compressed Gas

•  Keep away from heat. •  Do not drop or handle

roughly. •  Keep the container tightly

closed. •  Eg: Oxygen gas, paint cans.

Class B: Flammable and Combustible Materials •  Keep away from heat. •  Keep away from sources of ignition. •  No smoking. •  Avoid static discharge or sparks. •  Keep container tightly closed. •  Eg: Gasoline, acetone.

Class C: Oxidizing Material

•  Keep away from heat. •  Keep in a cool place. •  Keep away from flammable and

combustible materials. •  Avoid shock and friction. •  Eg: Bleach, Hydrogen peroxide.

Class D: Poisonous and Infectious Materials Division 1: Materials Causing Immediate and

Serious Toxic Effects

•  Cause death when exposed to small amounts.

•  Permanent damage when exposed. •  Avoid contact; use PPE’s. •  Eg: Carbon monoxide, Sodium cyanide,

Hydrogen Sulphide.

Class D: Poisonous and Infectious Materials Division 2: Materials Causing Other Toxic Effects

•  Damage caused over prolonged exposure.

•  May be carcinogens. •  Wear suitable PPE’s. •  Eg: Asbestos, Mercury, Lead.

Division 3: Biohazardous Infectious Materials

•  Living organisms or toxins. •  Cause diseases in living things. •  Organisms can live in body tissues. •  Eg: AIDS/HIV virus, Hepatitis B,

Salmonella.

Class D: Poisonous and Infectious Materials Class E: Corrosive Material

•  Cause severe burns to skin and other tissues.

•  Can attack other materials such as clothing and metals.

•  Damage is permanent. •  Eg: Sulphuric and Nitric acid, Lye,

Ammonia gas.

Class F: Dangerously Reactive Material •  React vigorously with water to make

a toxic gas. •  Shock sensitive; “unstable’. •  Vigorously join with itself

(polymerization), or break down. •  Eg: Fiberglass materials.

WHMIS Supplier Label

•  Provides information about a chemical.

•  Affixed to the container.
