BACKGROUND

In present world of globalization, no business can achieve the desired business results without ensuring economic, social and environment sustainability. However, unlike other industries that have choice of locating their projects at any geographical location suitable to them, mining industry inevitably has to be where the minerals occur. Therefore, the challenge of following sustainability principles gets significantly magnified. This challenge gets further compounded by the fact that most of the minerals are in forest, backward and tribal areas – where economic, social and other infrastructures are conspicuous by their absence. In such settings, mining industry has to take care of many diverse and compelling issues right from conservation of biodiversity, wildlife, environment, etc.

Mining industry now is resolutely marching towards sustainable mining while performing its dual role of meeting the domestic demand of raw materials as well as of increasing its contribution in the international market. It is striving hard to acquire the capability to deliver sustainable and responsible economic growth through R&D; productivity enhancement; improved technology and conservation strategies. The voluntary CSR and community welfare initiatives undertaken by the industry along with the Health & Safety of the stakeholders is well recognized.

In order to motivate and recognize the efforts of mining industry for having addressed these multi-dimensional issues in an exemplary manner, FIMI has instituted FIMI’s Awards Scheme. There are nine awards in four categories, viz. awards of Excellence, Environment, Health & Safety and Social Awareness which are given annually. Each award carries a trophy and a certificate.

As a part of FIMI’s Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations, FIMI has decided to confer the Golden Jubilee Award for Excellence, a one-time award, to one of the most promising mines for achieving excellence consistently over the decade through sustainable and responsible mining.

Modalities of this award were decided by the Jury committee in its first meeting held on 13th May, 2016. The modalities for short-listing the mines are provided below:

a) The mine should have been previously awarded with FIMI Excellence Award at least once.

b) Total number of FIMI Awards received (including those in other categories) till date.

c) Mine showcasing consistent improvement during the last 10 years – in terms of scientific mining, environment protection and management, socio-economic development of the surrounding communities, mine closure, etc.

d) Special weightage will be given for exemplary Reclamation & Rehabilitation efforts by the mine.

e) Mines meeting the above criteria to be shortlisted on the basis of analysis of data available for past 25 years of FIMI Awards.

Based on the modalities set by the Jury, three mines were shortlisted to make their presentation before the Jury Committee, highlighting the best practices at their mine. The finalist was decided by the Jury on the basis of the presentation by the shortlisted mines.

Continuous mine environment monitoring system to address the abnormal rise in the gas levels to mitigate these hazards at very initial stage.

Upgraded to 450 cu.m. of auxiliary fan capacity for better face ventilation. Installed mine air cooling system to improve the ventilation conditions and chair

lift system to reduce the arduous travel and fatigue in deep coal mine. Risk Mitigation has been done by reduction of exposure to immediate roof using

Universal Drill Machine while supporting. Gradual transition from SDL to LHD to Road Header to embrace cutting instead

of hazardous drilling and blasting. Proper documentation and display of Emergency Preparedness & Response

Plans and Triggered Action Response Plan for tackling with major hazards. In-house rescue trained person who have won many prizes at national and

international levels. Monitoring of air quantity is done using personal dust sampler at critical points. Safety week and safety competitions are held at fixed interval to motivate the

feelings towards safety. Improving health standards of employees and contractor workers by IME &

PME. Organizing regular awareness camps such as World Diabetes Day, No

Tobacco Day, etc. to address promote health awareness. Central Hospital and Dispensaries to provide the best medical facilities in the

area. Installed underground belt conveyor for transportation of coal from mines to
