Personal Qualities

When I first joined Groundwork There was little or no Vocational Training in place. What was in place had no structure or organisation. Having only 3 weeks before the first cohort started the course, I quickly organised and developed the training area and paperwork associated with the course. I am now managing the day-to-day running of the training unit from, managing the budget to delivery of the course. This includes further development of the vocational training curriculum provision ensuring that quality is not compromised. I am able to devise and deliver a variety of learning methods and opportunities to meet the needs of groups and individuals. I can plan, evaluate and deliver courses which best meet the requirements, abilities and experience of individual learners. I have experience in planning and preparing lesson plans, devising schemes of work and learning activities to meet the learner’s needs. These include teaching methods and resources. I can communicate clearly with learners and engender enthusiasm for learning through a variety of student cantered learning activities. This is also achieved by setting clear goals and intellectual challenges for student learning. It is also important that learners have a clear understanding of intended outcomes. I am comfortable communicating with other members of staff at all levels. I feel that this is very important as it gives all staff a chance to share good practice. I can work effectively as part of a team. This supports a more empowered way of working, removing constraints which may prevent someone doing their job properly. It also fosters flexibility and responsiveness, especially the ability to respond to change.During my time with St Helens College I demonstrated excellent organisational skills. I was involved with planning and tracking the day to day operations in our department. I was also responsible for keeping student records up to date and, accurately entering these manually and electronically to the filing and recording system. I can work to deadlines set by clients, awarding bodies and the college. This was demonstrated in my job with St Helens College. I carried out initial assessments with clientsbefore determine which course and level best suited their needs. I then discussed time scales and deadlines for completion, taking into account those set by the college and awarding bodies. During my employment with C. R. Taylor Ltd I was employed as a supervisor from 1995 to 2000. My duties included setting and checking machinery, organising staff, checking stock levels, allocating work to relevant staff and carrying out risk assessment.

From 1991 to 1995 I worked part – time for The West Yorkshire Probation Service (WYPS), A. K. Potts & Son and Denholme properties. I was employed as a sessional supervisor for WYPS supervising offenders carrying out Community Payback. I worked on several projects which included laying new, and re-laying existing kerb edgings and installing drainage channels to improve car parking areas at Mytholmroyd Community Centre, and Haworth First School. This included working to risk assessments, method statements, drawings, specifications, work schedules and manufacturers' information. Because this work was carried out over several weeks it was also necessary to cordon off the work area and erect safety/security barriers, and safety notices and signs to protect the work and general public.Health and Safety was observed at all times in accordance with current Health, safety and Welfare legislation requirements. I carried out all aspects of joinery whilst working for A. K. Potts. This included first and second fix joinery and finishing; this also included constructing traditional roofing. I was also involved in manufacturing bespoke joinery such as doors and panelling for several projects. Whilst working for Denholme Properties I was involved in laying bases for sheds of several shapes and sizes. These were to customer requirements, either in concrete or paving slabs. It included measuring, calculating quantity, preparation work, mixing materials, cutting, laying and fixing materials.

I enjoy the challenge of learning new skills and I’m not afraid to try something new. My achievements demonstrate my ability to organise both myself and my time.
