John Testar, guitar

John Testar occupies a unique space as a guitar soloist that few are willing to fill. Though trained as a classical guitarist, John incorporates a broad spectrum of musical mediums that goes well beyond genre and tradition. In his concerts, John plays standard repertoire, his own compositions, as well as both planned and free form improvisations. The effect is one of freshness and vitality, where the audience, as well as the artist himself, won't know where the musical mom-ent will lead! John has recently been invited to play solo concerts for the Guitare Alla Grande Festival (Gatineau), the Sauble Beach Guitar Festival (Sauble Beach, ON) and the Toronto, Brantford and Winnipeg Classical Guitar Societies. John is also invited routinely to play for the Toronto District School Board to provide outreach concerts to young children in schools throughout Toronto. Slated for release in early 2015 is John's debut solo guitar record, which features classical and non-genre defined compositions and improvisations. The album features music for solo guitar played on a classical, as well electric guitar. John received his Bachelor of Music (2009) and Master of Music (2011) degrees from the University of Ottawa, studying with the great pedagogue, performer and composer, Patrick Roux. Afterwards, John also spent three years of additional study with Naxos recording artist and University of Toronto senior lecturer, Dr. Jeffrey McFadden. He currently lives, performs and teaches in Toronto.
