Cage-Free Eggs: Behind the Myth

Hens used or egg production come romhatcheries, where male chicks (none o whichcan lay eggs) are killed immediately aterhatching. Each year, hundreds o millions othese vulnerable beings are suocated orground up alive to produce ertilizer or eed.

Chickens used to produce eggs, includingeggs labeled “cage-ree,” have their beaksorcibly mutilated to minimize the damagethey cause each other when crowded together.

At all arms, large-scale and small-scale, laying hens are killed when their productiondeclines, typically within two years, as eedingthese worn-out individuals cuts directly intoprofts. I allowed to live ree o exploitation andslaughter, chickens can live ten years or more. They protect, eed, and nurture their young,

What about organic?

Organic standards pertain to the content o

8/6/2019 Don't Buy the 'Humane' Myth

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dont-buy-the-humane-myth 2/2

Currently, both the animal-using industry andsome animal advocacy organizations arepropagating the idea that it is possible to use

and kill animals in a manner that can be airlydescribed as respectul or compassionate orhumane. This "Humane Myth" misrepresentsthe realities o animal use, and cultivates apositive image o activities that are neither

 just nor kind nor sustainable.

HumaneMyth.org aims to correct thismisinormation and inspire a orm o working orthe peaceul transormation o our society thatully respects the inherent dignity and worth oanimals and people alike.

The public deserves to be told the ull trutho who animals are and what is being doneto them behind closed doors, as well as thecatastrophic impact our society’s consumptiono meat, eggs, and dairy products is having onhuman health and the environment.

Please visit www.HumaneMyth.org to learn thetruth behind the “humane” myth and to fnd outhow you can make more inormed choices.

I care about animals, but still eat animalproducts. Isn‘t it better to buy “humane”animal products?

The animal-using industry has a decades-long track record o misleading the public, oneverything rom the health benefts o consumingtheir products to the living conditions and modeo death o the animals who are killed to createthose products. Positive-sounding labels areguaranteed to increase sales o more expensive"humane" products, but the evidence suggeststhat this is where the guarantees end.

What the animal-using industry does not want thepublic to know is that the creation o all animalproducts unavoidably involves injustice andcruelty. No matter the label, animals exploitedor proft are orced to endure confnement, social deprivation, mutilation, reproductivemanipulation, indignity and premature death.

Thereore, the only way you can truly be sure thatyour dietary choices are not harming animals isto stop eating animal products. Each time youmake the decision to use or consume a non-

animal alternative, you can be confdent youare making a real dierence, that you are nolonger contributing to a grievous injustice doneto animals on arms. You will also be helpingwildlie, as animal agribusiness is the numberone cause o habitat destruction worldwide. Andsince healthy, tasty, environmentally-riendly veganalternatives exist, why not do what is good oryour health, good or the animals and good or ourplanet?

 Aren’t “humane” animal productsmore sustainable?

According to a recent United Nations report, animal agriculture is the number one sourceo greenhouse gas impact, greater than allcars, trucks, buses, planes, trains, and shipscombined. As our population grows, andas more o us adopt a diet based on meat, dairy, and eggs, this disastrous impact onthe environment will expand regardless othe method being used to produce animalproducts. As it is, worldwide consumptiono meat has gone up 500% in the past halcentury. I present trends continue, it will go upanother 200% in the next hal century.

The production o a diet based on meat, dairy, and eggs uses several times moreenergy and water, and creates more toxicpollution than a vegan diet based on grains, nuts, vegetables and ruits. “Humane” armingmethods also require several times more landthan the more common industrial-style arming.

As more unspoiled lands are cleared, more andmore wild animals will be displaced or killed, and more species will be driven to extinction.

Thereore, each time we take a step toward

adopting a diet ree o animal productswe’re acting as responsible global citizens, dramatically reducing our contribution to globalwarming, resource depletion, deorestation, pollution, species loss, poverty, hunger, andanimal suering. While they may providepleasure to our palate and a salve or ourconscience, “humane” animal productssimply do not solve the problems that needto be addressed by our species i we are tolive on this planet in a just and sustainablemanner.
