How it all started (simplified version):

Darcey volunteers to help advise a straw bale pilot project with Dosti

    Welfare Organization in northern Pakistan

Surkhab is Assistant Program Officer and facilitates project

    PAKSBABs mission:

To apply straw bale and other appropriate building solutions to

protect and improve the lives of the poor, especially in seismic and

severe temperature regions of the developing world.

    What makes PAKSBABs straw bale

    system unique?

Earthquake resistant AND affordable Simple load bearing design

    6/30

Straw bales are made with locally fabricated compression

moulds and manually operated farm jacks

Foundation construction with fishing net for seismic reinforcement.

Tops and sides of rock foundation are plastered with soil cement.

Straw bales are placed in a running bond with bamboo pins for

out-of-plane support. Trusses are connected to top plates.

Ceiling is insulated with light straw clay. Slip is applied to walls, then

base plaster coat. Fishing net is spread and attached to framing.

Second and final plaster coats are applied

and finished with clay paint or lime wash

    Thoughts:

    Organization/company building and SBbuilding co-emphasis

    Systems (permaculture) approach

    Non-profit versus for-profit social enterprise

    Microfinance mortgages need to be

    investigated

Carbon project certification / offsets subsidize

    micro-income clients
