Special collection next weekend for

“World Mission Sunday” Please drop your envelope in the

regular collection.

Today’s Readings:

Isaiah 53: 10-11 Hebrews 4: 14-16

Mark 10: 35-45 or 10: 42-45

Today’s readings, with their focus on Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice, recall the readings of Holy Week. Today’s passage from Isaiah is part of the

longer passage we hear on Good Friday, describing the Suffering Servant, whose voluntary suffering atones for the sins of many.

Today’s Gospel foreshadows Holy Thursday’s Gospel, with Jesus telling his disciples that he came to serve, not to be served. As the author of

Hebrews says, let us look to Jesus for timely help. Next week’s readings:

Jeremiah 31: 7-9 Hebrews 5: 1-6 Mark 10: 46-52

Our Families Forming Disciples upcoming sessions Tuesday Oct. 19th—Youth night—Weber Hall 6:30-8:00pm Sunday October 24th –Family Mass @10:30am—Sheldon site **************************************************

God Answers our Prayers

My friends, how often in our spiritual journeys, especially during times of intense grief and loss, our relationship with the Lord can look like, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you?” And when things don’t go the way we want them, how easy it is to lose faith. We have all been there, some of us more so than others. For instance, whether we suffer the loss of a job, the loss of a relationship, the loss of our physical health or the loss of our mental health, or the terrible pain we suffer from the death of a loved one, when these things happen, it is quite natural and understandable for us to cry out from the depths of our hearts to God like the psalmists of old, “Hey, this wasn’t our agreement. What did I do? This wasn’t supposed to be the plan, remember? When did we agree that I was going to get diabetes or cancer? When did we agree that I would lose my job? When did we agree that my spouse would leave me? We never agreed that I would suffer the sickness, decline or death of someone so close and dear to my heart. Lord, this was not our agreement. The agreement was for you to do whatever I ask of you or have you forgotten?”

And Jesus said to James and John, “You do not know what you are asking.

As an aside, I think James and John in this Gospel reading can represent all of humanity, don’t you think? It seems to me that all of humanity, throughout the world and throughout history, in one voice cries out to Jesus, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And Jesus’ response is, “I will die for you.” That is his response. This is what we should remember when we are truly frustrated with God in a moment of justified grief. Jesus’ response is, “I will die for you and raise you up on the last day.” God might not answer our prayers exactly the way we expect. Indeed, when God answers our prayers, “no” is an answer too, as frustrating as that can be at times. “Some of life’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.” Can it be that our Father in heaven knows what is better for us than we do? Can it be God’s eternal plan for us is better than what we can possibly fathom in this life? And we know his infinite love for us. He gives us the body and blood of his only Son for us, on the cross and in the Eucharist. This is how much he loves us.
