“Der Lustige Mai” was the theme of the Singer’s Concert, on Sunday, May 5, 2019 conducted by George Calabrese and accompanied by Mrs. Katherine Ulrich. The concert started with “Tulpen aus Amsterdam” and finished with a sing-a-long of “Der Mai ist gekommen”. Herman Koelmel, President of the New York State Saengerbund, presented certificates for 65 years of singing to Mrs. Patricia Kemmerer & Mrs. Katherine Ulrich. Congratulations to them for such an honor. The Singers also bid a fond farewell to Herman and Linda Koelmel, who are permanently residing in Sevierville, Tennessee. We wish them all the best in their new home. We also welcome Manfred and Marylou Karius, who are returning from Germany, after an extensive stay. The Singers celebrated another successful year with a dinner at Stonehedge Restaurant. Helga Nowak-Razey and her granddaughter Eliana LaBerge took a 3 week tour of Europe, visiting relatives and sightseeing in some prominent cities, such as Saltzburg, Munich and Berlin, and many other cities along the way. The Singers will participate in the opening ceremonies, Friday evening for the Germania Oktoberfest! We will resume rehearsals in September, on Monday evenings; at the club at 7:30 PM. Anyone interested in singing is welcome. We are an informal group, who enjoy singing German and American songs, with an emphasis on “Gemütlichkeit”-Friendship! If interested, please contact: Helga Nowak-Razey at 845-797-7519 or George Calabrese at 845-452-2905. Upcoming, this October, we will be sending delegates to the NYSSB Convention, where plans will be formulated for the upcoming Sängerfest, in June 2020. __________________________________________________________________________________________

These Germania T-Shirts are available for sale at the festivals or from the Bartender during regular club hours. They make a fun Christmas or Birthday gift, a great barhopping shirt, or the perfect shirt to wear at the club. It's also a great message as "Keep Calm" means to relax, and not get emotionally invested in situations, events, or people that you have absolutely no control over.

GOOD & WELFARE AND SUNSHINE NEWS News from and about our members.

The German Language Class is back in session after a short summer break. Our teacher, Beatrix, who is an avid hiker, was in Nova Scotia hiking! Her daughter moved from Munich to Zurich in August and will be able

to connect with Beatrix's big family there. According to her daughter, Munich is very hot this summer. They experienced two heat waves so far [as of Aug 9th]. Hardly anyone is ready for the heat waves there (no AC and only an occasional fan). Her daughter enjoys the Eisbach (German for ice brook). It is a very cold stream that goes through the park known as the Englischer Garten (the Central Park in Munich). It is a popular place to be during the very hot summer days. The river Isar is also a cool place to hang out. People can go swimming (at their own risk) anywhere they can find access. Beatrix will be visiting her family, daughter, and grandson in Zurich this month (September 2019).

<<< Pete and Dori Licis' son, Aaron and daughter in law Stephanie were married on June 28, 2019. Congratulations! >>> Congratulations to Helga Nowak-Razey on the birth of her first great granddaughter, Harper Leed.

thINkINg of you. Sending some get well cheer to our members who have not been feeling well and those still recovering from surgeries and surgical procedures: Darryl Bielski, Liz Calabrese, Anneliese Kreig, Resi Kizina and Lore Schoenfeld. In Memory of Enid Gerda Charles who passed away on July 15th. Enid is the only sister of member Elizabeth Meyer and she is Carol Meyer's aunt. Our condolences to the Serching family. Frank S. Serching, Sr., 88, a longtime Staatsburg resident, died peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2019 at The Baptist Home in Rhinebeck. Born May 4, 1931 in Szepetnek, Hungary, he was the son of the late Anton and Teréz Rechner Szersing. He spent his youth in Hungary and Germany and immigrated to the United States

in 1952 at the age of 21. Mr. Serching proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Frank knew the value of a hard day’s work as he simultaneously held two full-time jobs for twenty-one years. He was the Green House Supervisor at the Hudson River State Hospital during the day and Head Custodian at F. D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park at night. He retired from both jobs in 1986. He was a former member of the Dinsmore Hose Company in Staatsburg, and an Honorary Member of Germania of Poughkeepsie. An avid bowler, he bowled in many local leagues at Ro-Lin Lanes in Red Hook and Kingston Lanes, including many years in a mixed league with his wife, Patricia. He was a communicant of Regina Coeli / St. Paul’s Parish in Hyde Park. On April 4, 1959 at St. Paul’s Church in Staatsburg, he married the former Patricia A. Horan. His wife of sixty years survives at home. His children were his biggest joy in life. In addition to his wife, he is

survived by his six children, Coleen Crawford and husband, Randy of Las Vegas, Frank S. Serching Jr. of Staatsburg, Susan A. Pius and husband, Peter, of Rhinebeck, Evelyn T. Seipp and husband, Steven, of Stanfordville, Mark D. Serching of Las Vegas, and Paula A. Holz and husband, Jim, of Las Vegas; twelve grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Michael Serching of Livingston; sister, Magdelen Decker and husband, Richard, of Stanfordville; and many nieces and nephews.

Marguerite C. Schaedlich passed away peacefully on April 4, 2019. Marguerite was born November 5, 1929 to the late Amelia and Carl Sprenger and lived her entire life in Poughkeepsie, New York. She had one brother, Carl F Sprenger,

who was killed during WWII in 1945. During her early years, Marguerite simply became known as "Sis" to her closest friends and family. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1947 and continued her education earning a BA Degree in Education from Wagner College in 1951, and an MS in Education from SUNY New Paltz. She began her career as an early education teacher in the Hyde Park School district from 1955 to 1961 when she left teaching to dedicate her time to raising her children. She married Otto A Schaedlich on April 24, 1955 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Poughkeepsie, of which she was a lifelong member and contributed to many of the Lutheran Church organizations. During her marriage to Otto Schaedlich, Marguerite and Otto were active members of the IBM Quarter Century Club, the NY Army National Guard Retired Officers

Assoc., and the Germania Society of Poughkeepsie. Marguerite and Otto Schaedlich spent 57 wonderful years of marriage together and enjoyed traveling throughout the world and spending time with their lifelong friends and family which always brought them such great joy. Otto Schaedlich passed away on his birthday in September of 2012. Friends and family will always remember her gracious smile, her great sense of humor and her extremely generous personality. She was fiercely independent and lived a full life with absolutely no regrets. Our deepest sympathy to her children Eric Schaedlich, Carol Schaedlich Savage, and Kristine Schaedlich, and their families including Marguerite's 6 Grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as "Oma". _________________________________________________________________________________________________

GERMANIA ALMRAUSCH SCHUHPLATTLER VEREIN With a group of 15 people, Germania Almrausch, S.V. attended the 27th Gaufest held July 4-7, 2019, in Washington, D.C., which was hosted Alt Washingtonia Schuhplattler Verein. Gaufeste are four-day biennial gatherings of the Gauverband Nordamerika held in odd-numbered years; the host Verein

varies. Typical events include Heimatabend (performances of traditional song, dance, and music), Mundartmesse (traditional church service done in Bavarian dialect), Welcome and Farewell Dances, Festabend (Saturday banquet), Ehrentaenze (honor dances), Festzug (parade), Festtag (Sunday festival), Preisplatteln (prize dancing), Jugendeinzelplatteln (children's single-couple dancing), Workshops, and socializing. We are pleased to report that Almrausch had members participate in the Einzelpreisplatteln: In the 12-15-year category: Erik Yearack (with Sofia Mueller from Montreal, and again with Felicia Hepp from Bavarian Club Edelweiss), and Christian Kuklis (with Allison Bogovic of Bavarian Club Edelweiss); and in the 16-34 year category: Jarrett Kuklis (with GJ's daughter Sabine of Edelweiss Reading), and April Yearack (with Zachary Gagne from Montreal); all received respectable scores and we are very proud of these young dancers. Congratulations also to Erik who did a very respectable job as our Fahnenträger for this event, and to GJ Doedee who realized his goal to lead the group onto the dance floor at the Gau after such a miraculous recovery from his motorcycle accident. Our Patenverein, Edelweiss-Passaic, will host the 28th Gaufest the weekend of July 8-11, 2021 in Atlantic City, NJ!!!

We welcome new members... please contact us at [email protected].

Sylvia stopped by at the clubhouse at one of the Wednesday lunches in July and the volunteers were hard at work. In the kitchen, Helga Nowak-Razey and Joan Magee were cooking and

making sandwiches while Gene Schlag was taking care of the dirty dishes, utensils, pots and pans. Marylou Karius (back from Germany) and Bobbi Gordon were serving and keeping the customers happy. Bartender Darryl Bielski took care of the thirsty patrons. It was nice to see everyone working so well together. The volunteers and patrons are mostly regulars here and it would not be farfetched to think they've created enduring friendships as a result. If you are looking for a place to have a nice lunch on a Wednesday, consider coming to the club to enjoy a good lunch and support your club.

SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME ON HOW WE CAN GET MORE HELP Please stop by your club and look for the red 3-ring binder and sign up, or reach out to our membership chairperson to find an event that fits into your schedule. There are many types of jobs and tasks to be done at the club; we can surely match your abilities with one of our many events. Volunteer opportunities include bartending, assist in the kitchen with meal preparation, plating food, dish and pot washing, wait tables/serve meals, bake desserts, making soups or salads, help with hall set up or event clean up, chair an event, join a committee, run raffles, decorate, buildings and grounds maintenance, and repair projects. We need gardeners in the spring and fall, snow shoveling for the sidewalks in the winter, fall clean up and winterization, and spring clean up. We need painters and project planners. We want to develop a committee for a new patio and pull the labor from our membership if possible.

It is YOUR club, so we need YOUR help to keep Germania going. PLEASE SIGN UP TODAY! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

>> Club Policy approved by the Membership at the June 15th, 2019 Annual Meeting <<

VOLUNTEER HOURS POLICY Effective 7/1/2019

A. VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS. In order to (a) fulfill our club's purpose, (b) run our day-to-day operations without over burdening or over extending a small group of the same members, and (c) pay all of our organization's expenses, Germania needs the support of every member. Thus, Germania of Poughkeepsie club members are expected to dedicate volunteer time to the club. (1) Festival Work Hours. Members will be required to volunteer for a minimum of two (2) work shifts each fiscal year (starting July 1 of the current year and ending June 30 of the following year) at any of the club's three (3) annual festivals (Maifest, Oktoberfest and Christkindlmarkt), which will be identified as Festival Work Hours. Festival Work Hours shifts are typically 4 hour shifts but are more specifically defined in the Volunteer Sign Up Book(s). Volunteer opportunities are identified in the club's Maifest and Oktoberfest Volunteer Sign Up Books. A member can meet their Festival Work Hours requirement by working two shifts at one festival if openings are available. (2) Event Work Hours. Members will also be required to volunteer for a minimum of one (1) club event each fiscal year (starting July 1 of the current year and ending June 30 of the following year), which will be identified as Event Work Hours. Volunteer opportunities are identified in the club's Volunteer Sign Up Book and include, without limitation, the following events: Wednesday lunches, Friday dinners, Biergarten, Pub Night and parties run by and for Germania. B. MISSED WORK HOURS. Any member that has not completed all of their Festival Work Hours and Event Work Hours for the prior membership year, will be assessed a Missed Work Hours Fee in addition to their club dues, which will be due and payable with their membership renewal dues. Missed Work Hours Fees: $100 for membership year starting 7/1/2020 and $200 for membership year starting 7/1/2021. Increases in assessment amounts will be determined at the discretion of the Board of Directors. For example, if a member does not volunteer for the minimum work hours in described in "A" (1) and (2) above during the July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 year, then when they renew their membership on July 1, 2020 their Dues will be $185 ($85 Dues + $100 Missed Work Hours Fee). If a member does not volunteer for the minimum work hours in described in "A" (1) and (2) above during the July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021 year, then when they renew their membership on July 1, 2021 their Dues will be $285 ($85 Dues + $200 Missed Work Hours Fee).1 Consistent with the club's Bylaws, no person shall participate with any sister club (Men and Ladies Singers, the Poughkeepsie Blue and White Soccer Club, and the Germania Almrausch Schuhplattler Verein) unless their membership with Germania of Poughkeepsie has been renewed. C. DOCUMENTATION AND CREDIT FOR WORK HOURS: Festival Work Hours will be documented in the Festival Volunteer Sign-Up Books and confirmed during the volunteer check-in procedure at the festival. Event Work Hours will be credited when (a) a member has signed up in the club's Volunteer Sign Up Book and subsequently completed the work shift, and (b) the member has listed their completed work hours information on the club's Membership renewal form when they pay their dues. The tracking and verification process will be developed by the Board of Directors. D. EXEMPTIONS / EXCEPTIONS: Members that shall be exempt from volunteer work hour requirements are (a) members who live outside of New York State or farther than 70 miles from Germania Hall, (b) Life Members (as defined in the Bylaws), (c) members with a disability or health issue that has been disclosed to the Board in writing and includes duration if temporary, and (d) Junior members. Exempt members may always elect to volunteer, and are encouraged to do so if able.

1 Dues amounts referenced are the Dues payable to Germania of Poughkeepsie; any dues charged by sister clubs to their members in addition to Germania Membership Dues are not controlled or governed by Germania of Poughkeepsie.

The Friday Night Dinner on July 19th was sold out! We served delicious Jägerschnitzel with red cabbage and egg noodles. Dessert was a piece of Apple Strudel dusted with powdered sugar. Thank you to all our volunteers: Gary and Joyce Schonmann, Ginni Wagner, Chris Blatz, Helga Nowak-Razey, Sylvia Reuter, John Spring, and bartenders Karen Barone and Jim Gordon. Our thanks also to Jason for posting our events on the website and to Karen who takes care of our Facebook page and the newsletter. We sold close to 90 dinners and a lot of drinks at the bar. These dinners help the club pay for its many expenses throughout the year. Dinners, which include dessert and coffee or tea, are $12 for members and $15 for your guests. We hope to see you at the next Friday Night Dinner or Biergarten! Thank you for supporting your club.

<<< (1) Charlie Luhmann, who spent most of the day May 2nd and 3rd spreading about 60 tons of gravel around the clubhouse parking lot, as well as the pavilion and grounds area <<< (2) Many thanks to our tireless First Lady Sylvia Reuter and always helpful Volunteer Charlie Braun for joining Susan Plog (picture shy) on July 25, 2019 for the Quarterly Rail Trail cleanup. They gathered several bags of trash and left our Club's Adopted 1.5 miles section one we can be proud of maintaining for Trail users. Please consider helping at the fall cleanup (check website for date announcement).

The following volunteers came out on Friday morning, August 31, 2019 to clean up the pavilion in preparation for the Oktoberfest event: Chris Blatz, Jeff Borst, Charlie Braun, George Calabrese, Carol Meyer, Sandy Powell, Jo Pragman, Bill Reuter, Sylvia Reuter, Gary Schonmann, and Ginni Wagner. From Bill: " Thanks to all August 30 Cleanup Day Volunteers, helping get our club ready for Oktoberfest 2019! Great Job and lots of fun!!!"
