During its first two decades, the U.S. Outward Bound Wilderness School was open only to young men. But in 1965, a group of 24 determined teenage girls broke that barrier to participate in the rigorous program, venturing into the outdoors to paddle lakes, hike, build shelter and catch fish. Their month of surviving in the woods taught them that they could do more than they ever thought possible. This documentary is about those young women, what happened to them since, and how the experience changed their lives forever.

In 1985, with her people feeling deeply disenfranchised by the U.S. government, Wilma Mankiller took office as the Cherokee Nation’s first female principal chief. Having relocated from Oklahoma to San Francisco earlier in her life, Mankiller worked with the Black Panthers and the Alcatraz occupation movement, eventually bringing the passion and experience she gained in those movements back to her people. During her decade-long tenure as principal chief and beyond, Mankiller’s leadership enabled the Cherokee Nation to become one of the most economically and culturally successful tribes in America.

Although she is less well known, activist Dolores Huerta was an equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with César Chávez. This documentary chronicles Huerta’s early years with the United Farm Workers, her work with the grape boycott launched in 1965, and her role in the feminist movement of the 1970s. Featuring interviews with Gloria Steinem, Luis Valdez, Hillary Clinton, Angela Davis and others, Dolores is an intimate portrait of a passionate champion of the oppressed.

TheCatintheHatKnowsaLotAboutThat!SEASON PREMIERE FRIMar2|7:30a
This exciting and engaging series from PBS KIDS helps cultivate positive views about science among young children. In each episode, the Cat in the Hat and his friends Sally and Nick go on a science adventure, such as shrinking to bee size to explore a hive and discover how honey is made; flying with birds to discover how and why they migrate; or taking a snowcat to the Arctic to explore freezing and melting. The children ask questions, make observations and predictions, plan investigations, collect data, make discoveries, and discuss ideas about how the world works.

ArtintheTwenty-FirstCentury:VancouverFRIMar16|10p
This groundbreaking series follows artists at work as they transform inspiration into art. In the Vancouver episode, four artists—Jeff Wall, Brian Jungen, Stan Douglas and Liz Magor—reframe the world through a series of sophisticated illusions. By recreating historical moments, staging photos of vernacular scenes, and crafting intricate sculptures that trick the eye, they reveal how everyday images and moments from the past are not always what they seem.

This is a fresh and genre-defying film about the life of radical Chicano lawyer,
author and countercultural icon Oscar Zeta Acosta—the basis for the character
Dr. Gonzo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, written by legendary journalist-
provocateur Hunter S. Thompson. Acosta’s powerful literary voice, brash courtroom style and notorious revolutionary antics
made him a revered figure within the Chicano movement of the 1960s and ’70s.

Season 7special two-hour premiereSUNMar25|8p
The midwives are back! The new season, set in 1963, deals with critical issues of the day, from diseases like leprosy and Huntington’s chorea to social issues such as the rising number of unmarried mothers. The residents of Nonnatus House contend with changes in the community as the slums of Poplar are transformed into tower blocks. This season, the show also introduces its first West Indian nurse; her character gives insight into the experience of Caribbean nurses who came to the U.K. in the 1960s to join the National Health Service workforce.

How do we live with death on the horizon? With defiant rage, acceptance or denial? What is our story, and will it sustain us at the end? This documentary by filmmaker Helen Whitney features nine men and women of uncommon intelligence grappling with these questions. For them, death is no longer an abstraction, far off into the future. Their dramatic stories challenge, unsettle and inspire.
