The 4th Millennium ConventionMDGs AND BEYOND: POSITIONING THE ROLE OF NURSESTN GLOBAL HEALTHINTRODUCTION

From the discovery of vaccines that eradicated small pox virus to the threats of bioterrorism and changingclimate, the world is cunently going through a transformatlon where health becomes less vertical and becominginterconnected with other developmental agendas suct as economic development, security issues and humanitarianemergencies, governance and human rights. We are at the era where health occupies a central place in global agenda, which offers an optimistic view but also poses greater tests. The interplay of the rising number of non-communicablediseases, the existing burden of infectious diseases and tre emerging health impact of changing environment imposesgargantuan challenges to the world particularly among the low to middle income countries. The complexity is added withthe advent of migralion. lnfectious diseases have he potenlial to travel quickly and spread across the nations. Healttprofessionals are recruited in the developed countries, while the origin country is left with the lack of workers to care forthe health of its people, Finally, the UN MDGs is about to end and the agenda for post-2015 is underway.

Because of growing need for global healttr discussions, AYNLA's 4th installment of its Millennium Conventionseries aims to position the role of the nurses in global health. Being the largest health professional in the country, nursesshould be aware of the contemporary global healfi issues, its challenges and opportunities. We believe that nurses aremajor players in globalizing world.

As a backgrounder to the previous Millennium Conventions, the 1st Millennium Convention in 2010 opened theseries by introducing the Millennium Development Goals {MDGs) to nurses and how nurses as active catalysts ofprogressive change can help in achieving its goals. Speakers from different United Nation ageneies sudr as those fromthe UN Millennium Campaign, UN Development Programme, UN Population Fund, UN AIDS and key nationalgovernment agencies such as fte Department of Heallh and the NationalYouth Commission attended the event Nationallegislators were also present to grace the event. Senator Francis "Chiz' Escudero, Senate Chairperson on Human Rightsbecame the convention's first Keynote Speaker.

The 2nd Millennium Convention in 2011 opened the first set of MDGs to be discussed, Goals 4 & 5, on Matemal& Child health. The convention was joined by a distinguished roster of top-caliber women leaders such as former DOHSecretary Esperanza Cabral, Akbayan Spokesperson & fonner Representative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel. AYNLA alsospearheaded frre 1st NationalNurses Consultation (NNCIwhich was attended by the DOH Nursing Consultant & formerPRC Commissioner Ruth Padilla, Member of the Board of Nursing Perla Po and the Chairperson of the ProfessionalRegulations Commission Atty. Teresita Manzala.

The Srd installment in 2A12 tackled the six building blocks of the health system and the Universal HealthcareFramework of the present administration - the "Kalusugang Pangkalahatan'. lt was held in lloilo.

On the 4th year,.AYNLA will go beyond the MDGs, We will discuss the pressing issues of global health, which arenot usually tackled by nurses but plays a huge role in the direclions of population health policies & programming and thefuture of nursing profession. lt will also lay down uptodate nwsing programs such as the Nursing Certification Program,Nursing Law Amendments and tre RN Heals. AYNLA will bring the 4th convention in Cabanatuan City which is 'a firstclass, urban city located at the heart of he province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. lt is considered the commerce, industrialand educational hub of the province and the commercial center for the eastem portion of Luzon's central plain, whictt isheavily farmed in rice."
