Snoopy on the red carpet

From page 1“Everyone at Bohs echoes

the unanimous condemnationof this act and shares the disbe-lief that someone could dosomething so thoughtless andhurtful, particularly as membersof his family still live locally.”

A Cabra man and an Irelandinternational, Whelan was oneof 21 passengers killed in the1958 Munich Air Disaster asManchester United made a re-fuelling stop on their way homefrom a European Cup tie in Bel-grade.

He is buried in GlasnevinCemetery, while the railwaybridge at Fassaugh Road inCabra was renamed in his hon-our in 2006. Both are just ashort walk from DalymountPark.

Liam's brother Christy is along-time Bohs fan and still reg-ularly attends games. Hisgrandsons Donal and Cathal are

also dedicated supporters of theclub.

Christy has expressed hisgratitude on behalf of the fam-ily for their efforts in cleaningup the vandalised tribute toLiam.

“The Whelan family wouldlike to thank the Bohemian sup-porters for all they’ve done withtheir work on the Liam WhelanBridge, cleaning and repairingthe damage to the plaque andits surrounds,” he said.

“Their swift response andvaluable work is much appreci-ated by the entire Whelan fam-ily.”

Football fans of variousteams visited the bridge follow-ing news of the attack anddecked it out in club jerseys asa mark of respect for Liam andsolidarity against the thugs.

Fianna Fáil Local ElectionCandidate, Paul Anthony Ward, said it was heartening to seethat the bridge had been

cleaned up by the council andthat fans of different clubs hadshowed their support.

“The bridge was renamed inhonour of Liam Whelan in 2006not because he was a Man Utdman, but because he was aCabra man,” he said.

“It's great to see the com-munity, no matter which teamthey support, coming out to de-fend their own. This is the sideof Cabra we never see in themedia.”

Liam Whelan joined Man-chester United as an l8-year-oldfrom Home Farm. One of hisfirst tasks was to play in the1953 FA Youth Cup Final againstWolves where he starred in astunning 7-1 first leg victory.

Such was his talent duringhis spell with United’s youthteam that he attracted a dis-creet inquiry from Brazil abouthis availability.

He was born on April 1 1935and died on February 6. 1958.

New jobs at Dublin 15 firmJack Gleeson

A FINGAL based IT company set up just three years ago fol-lowing a management buy-out has announced it’s to dou-ble its workforce with the addition of 16 new jobs.

Minister for Communica-tions Pat Rabbitte visited Blan-

chardstown based Agile Net-works earlier this month to

make the announcement andcongratulate the company on itscontinued growth.

The minister confirmed thatover the next 18 months thecompany will create 16 newfull-time jobs in the technologysector bringing the number ofemployees up to 32.

Since it was established in2011, Agile Networks hasrecorded remarkable growthfigures, achieving e2.3 millionin turnover in its first year, growing to an estimated e7million in 2014.

The company started outwith just six employees after asuccessful management buy-out of Telindus’ Irish operations. The new jobs represent a five-fold increase in staff numberssince then and as a result, AgileNetworks is moving into biggeroffices to accommodate itsrapid expansion.

Providing a full lifecycle ofintegration services for organi-sations such as HEAnet, AnalogDevices, the ESB and 14 of thetop 25 internet serviceproviders in Ireland, the com-pany has grown its client base

from just seven customers in2011 to 53 this year.

It currently supports overone million end users, across1,200 sites.

Managing Director, DarraghRichardson, said impressivegrowth in his company’s sectoris being driven by increasingdemand for customised supportand services.

“Since the very beginning,we have set out to become aspecialised network integrator, offering a unique ‘focal engi-neer’ model,” he said.

“We have seen a significantmove away from the traditional‘break/fix’ model of support, toa much more proactive man-aged service.”

Recruitment is already un-derway for the new positions, which will be based at AgileNetworks’ new Blanchardstownheadquarters in Ballycoolin.

Of the new roles an-nounced, 11 will be for engi-neering and technical positionswith five jobs across sales andadministration.

Richardson added: “As AgileNetworks expands over the

“I had the tough task ofhelping judge the shortlist andI can truly say that it was a re-ally hard decision to pick ourwinners,” she said.

“The standard of entrieswas exceptional and I wouldlike to say a massive well doneto everyone who was short-listed as it’s a fantasticachievement to have beenrecognised out of the 7,500students who took part in thisyear’s competition.

“The winning students ineach category and overall win-ner Kyle should be extremelyproud of what they haveachieved. They are all wonder-fully talented writers and I amthrilled to have been luckyenough to read the work ofsome of our future playwrightsand novelists.”

Networks and other emergingstart-ups were “great exam-ples” of how Irish companiesare quickly becoming world-class providers of specialist ITservices.

“As envisaged in the Gov-ernment’s National Digital Strat-egy, Agile Networks, togetherwith other providers, are help-ing more Irish businesses andconsumers to get on-line and tostay connected more securely,”he said.

Hotel homeless numbers risingJack Gleeson

REPORTS that the number of homeless families being putup in hotels by local authorities is increasing have sparkedan angry response from a local TD.

It’s estimated that over 170homeless families are now liv-ing in hotels across the capitaldespite Dublin City Council ad-mitting recently that it wasn’t a“sustainable solution” to theproblem.

The reports follow calls ear-lier this month for the creationof a National Housing Strategyfrom Peter McVerry Trust andcondemnation of the practice ofplacing homeless families inhotels from the St Vincent dePaul.

Dublin North West TD,Dessie Ellis, told Northside Peo-ple he regularly dealt with fam-ilies across the city who havebeen put up in hotels once theybecome homeless.

“Many of these familieshave felt completely insecure in

this housing and in some caseshotels have decided not toallow families to continue stay-ing there,” he said.

“Recently I had to work witha family who were forced towalk the streets after a hotelput them out.

“Some people are in thesehotels for three to four weeks ata time. I have worked with peo-ple who have had to stay inthem for two months or moreuntil the hotel said they wouldthrow them out and the councilhad to act.”

The Sinn Fein TD said plac-ing homeless families in hotelswas also a massive drain on re-sources.

“If these hotel rooms, andsome families require morethan one, cost a modest aver-age of e80 it costs e14,000 a

night or e98,000 a week to ac-commodate them all.

“This is wildly in excess ofwhat it would cost to housethese families immediately ifthe Government had thecourage and political will to dothis.”

Last month the St Vincentde Paul (SVP) described theplacement of homeless familiesas “unacceptable and inappro-priate” and claimed there wasrecently 19 families in oneDublin hotel alone, rangingfrom a lone parent with onechild to a family of nine.

“The situation is critical inthe four Dublin local authorityareas,” said SVP Head of SocialJustice, John-Mark McCafferty.

“It is utterly unacceptablethat families are accommo-dated in this way. Confined to ahotel room puts a huge burdenon families in terms of normalliving conditions.

“While bed and breakfast isprovided the families have torely on take-away food for

other meals and have difficultyin getting children to and fromschools.

“There are also issuesaround child welfare. It is com-pletely inappropriate to havechildren living and movingaround in a hotel environmentfor an extended period.

“Many of the families livingin such conditions are there be-cause of difficulties with privatelandlords, many of whom nolonger accept tenants on sup-

plementary rent allowance, due to the increased level ofdemand for private rentedhousing.

“Indeed, some of the fami-lies living in hotels report theirrent having been increased ar-bitrarily by 25 per cent or land-lords evicting them on the basisof the house being sold, only tosee it later available for rent.

“The families we visit andsupport in Dublin hotels, alsohave the uncertainty of not

knowing when they will haveto move - often at short notice. Some families have been in ahotel for up to six months whileothers are moved from hotel tohotel more frequently.”

DCC recently told NorthsidePeople that it would be puttingin extra staff resources to re-spond to the needs of familiesin hotels.

“We provide in-reach sup-port via the Homeless ActionTeam (HAT), a dedicated chil-

dren and families team thatworks to progress these house-holds on as soon as possible,”a spokesperson said. “We willbe establishing additional sup-ported accommodation forfamilies, as we don’t see hoteluse as a sustainable solution.”

DCC confirmed that the vastmajority of families now pre-senting to homeless servicesare coming from the privaterental sector with rent supple-ment arrangements.

Mark Ball (Ratoath & Ash-bourne) took Bronze in thefighting competition, as didGlenn Doyle (Ratoath), JurgitaVarnes (Ratoath) and AidanTormey, who this time tookbronze in the fighting.

Star of the day was, with-out doubt, veteran PeterStaunton from Ratoath Taek-

wondo. At 68 years of age, thiswas Peter’s first fighting com-petition.

There was considerable in-terest in his fights and he wasmatched against Carlos Al-berto from Portugal who’s 10years Peter’s junior. The duodelighted the 2,000+ crowd asthey battled it out in a bid toscore points against eachother.

With a score of 4-0 to Al-berto, Peter had to settle forsilver. However, he was thetrue champion of the day andthe entire arena, includingjudges and referees, stoppedwhat they were doing androse to their feet to give Petera standing ovation, whichseemed to go on forever.

“I can’t believe it,” he said.“I feel like a superstar, every-one wants to have their phototaken with me. It’s just amaz-ing.”

The full team in Portugalalso included Martin Anev,Alan Lipicki, Jack Tormey andEmils Jakabson.

It’s the latest developmentat the Finglas hospital which in

recent years has completed anumber of major developmentsincluding new theatres, a 10bed isolation unit and the pur-chase of a hi-tech 3 Tesla MRIunit.

The new decontaminationunit was constructed to be fullycompliant with European stan-dards, ISO standard 13485 and

That means all medical de-vices processed in the new unitare decontaminated to themost current Irish and Europeanrequirements.

Experts say this sharing of fa-cilities and services has the po-tential to ensure a better qualityservice to patients and reducethe overall cost of decontamina-tion.

Speaking at the officialopening of the unit, John O’ Car-roll, CEO of Zehnacker IrelandHealthcare said: “Zehnacker Ire-land Healthcare is happy to beassociated with Cappagh fromconception to final constructionof this new facility.

“We see the practice of shar-ing state-of-the-art facilities be-tween hospitals as thecornerstone for ensuring qualityand achieving cost savings.

“This has been the experi-

ence of healthcare organisa-tions internationally, includingour parent company in Europe.”

Cappagh is the country’s na-tional tertiary referral centre forboth adult and children’s or-thopaedics. A total of 24 con-sultant orthopaedic surgeonsconfer and work together to de-liver a highly specialised and ef-ficient service in the hospital.

The hospital manages a co-hort of highly specific bone tu-mour cases, is a harvest centreand distributor of bone graft na-tionally and provides advancedrehabilitative services to pa-tients from both the Mater hos-pital and Connolly hospital.

Cappagh also carries outelective orthopaedic surgery for

A: The West Coast of Irelandhas some of the most beautifulwalks in Ireland. For this trip, Iwould suggest a small island lo-cated off the coast of Galwaycalled Inishbofin.

This is one of my favouriteholiday destinations in Ireland.Even though it is small there isalways plenty to see and do, es-pecially in the summer months.

Inishbofin is approximately6km by 4km and has threelooped walkways, all with stun-

These places often have arough, Industrial Age heritageand a rust-belt vibe that keepsthem honest, unvarnished andnonconformist.

And even though Glasgow isScotland's largest and most pop-ulated city, I consider it to be thecountry's second city behind Ed-inburgh, which wins first placefor its capital status and tourismappeal.

A century ago, Glasgow wasone of Europe's biggest cities, anindustrial powerhouse producing25 per cent of the world’s ocean-going ships, but in the mid-20thcentury, tough times hit the city, giving it a run-down feel.

Today Glasgow is on the riseagain and its flair for art and un-pretentious friendliness make itmore popular than ever to visit.

You can sense Glasgow’swonderful energy on its streetsand squares. At the heart of thecity is George Square, decoratedwith a Who’s Who of statues de-picting great Scots, from Sir Wal-ter Scott to James Watt, whoperfected the steam engine thathelped power Europe into theIndustrial Age.

Nearby is Buchanan Street,

SHORT BREAKS WITH

Scotland's Second CityLATELY I’ve really been enjoying what I consider to be the‘second cities’ of Europe, such as Naples in Italy, Marseillein France and Hamburg in Germany.

part of a pedestrian shoppingzone called the Golden Zed.Glaswegians also refer to thisdistrict (with the top shops intown) as the Style Mile.

It’s a delight to just stroll upthis street - listening to buskers, enjoying the people-watching,and remembering to look up atthe architecture above the mod-ern storefronts.

It's also worth meanderingthrough the Style Mile’s alleys, which are filled with huge, funand edgy murals. Rather thanletting graffiti artists mess upthe place with random or angrytagging, the city has given topstreet artists entire walls topaint. These murals are almostsightseeing destinations inthemselves.

Glasgow's artsy vibe can alsobe seen in its architecture. Dur-ing the late 1800s and early1900s, Glasgow-born architectCharles Rennie Mackintoshbrought an exuberant Art Nou-veau influence to this otherwisepractical, working-class city.

Travellers can enjoy his work(and a meal) at the Willow TeaRooms, a delightful black-and-white space that Mackintosh de-signed right down to thefurniture, lighting, and cutlery.

But his crowning achieve-ment is the Glasgow School ofArt. Still a working school, it'sonly viewable via a guided tour. From a fireplace that looks like akimono to the remarkable for-est-like library to windows thatsoar for multiple stories, thebuilding is an Art Nouveau orig-inal.

Near the Glasgow School ofArt is the Tenement House, a

perfectly preserved 1930s-eramiddle-class residence. This typ-ical row home was owned byMiss Agnes Toward, who for fivedecades kept her home essen-tially unchanged.

The kitchen calendar re-mains set for 1935, and canis-ters of liquorice powder (alaxative) still sit on the bath-room shelf.

Two excellent museums areworth the trek away from thecity centre. Housed in a grand,100-year-old, Spanish Baroque-style building, the Kelvingrove islike a Scottish Smithsonian, witheverything from a stuffed ele-phant to fine artwork by thegreat masters.

The Riverside Museum fo-cuses on transportation, featur-ing stagecoaches, locomotives, are-creation of a circa-1900street, and a shipping exhibitthat commemorates Glasgow’sshipbuilding era.

At night, I enjoy the hip, lively West End district, includingthe fun eateries and bars liningAshton Lane. A great place toend a West End evening is atÒran Mór, featuring an atmos-pheric bar, outdoor beer garden, and brassiere in a converted1862 church (the former nave isdecorated with funky murals).

Downstairs, there’s a night-club with everything from rockshows to traditional Scottishmusic nights.

Despite recent improve-ments, there still is a rough-and-tumble side to Glasgow, andlocals seem to come in twostripes: those who live to drinkbeer and cheer either Celtic orRangers, and those who arehardworking, cosmopolitan, andcultured (even though theydon’t sound like they are, giventheir hard Glaswegian accent).

If you venture into a rough

neighbourhood after dark - as Idid one night - it seems the en-tire world is populated by angrypeople with dead-end lives.

Crammed into bars, they leerat passers-by who don’t want tojoin the mosh pit. But the nextmorning, with the sunshinecomes a world of that secondtype of Glaswegian; people witha vision for renewing their city.

Edinburgh may have theroyal aura, but I find Glasgow’sdown-to-earth appeal captivat-ing. One Glaswegian told me:“The people of Glasgow have a

better time at a funeral than thepeople of Edinburgh have at awedding.”

In Glasgow, there’s no upper-crust history, and no one puts onairs. In this revitalized city, friendly locals do their best to in-troduce you to the fun-loving,laid-back Glaswegian way of life.

‘Made in’ labelling could be compulsory

THE European Parliamenthas signed off on a majorrevamp of the EU’s financialsystem in a bid to ensuretaxpayers will never againfoot the bill for failingbanks.

The deal approved by MEPsprovides for the creation of aEuropean authority with thepower to shut down problembanks and shunt losses ontobondholders.

Irish MEP Pat the Cope Gal-lagher said the package ofmeasures collectively known asthe ‘banking union’ shouldmean that “what happened in

Ireland following the bankingcollapse will never happenagain.”

Although this might seemcold comfort for debt-riddenIrish taxpayers, Gallagher saidit could possibly be applied toease our burden of legacy debt.

"It should strengthen Ire-land’s legitimate case for a ret-rospective deal on its bankdebt, as these specific meas-ures were not available to Ire-land and the Irish taxpayerduring the crisis,” said the Fi-anna Fáil MEP.

The deal brings to comple-tion an ambitious reform pro-gramme aimed at preventing

any repeat of the financial crisisin 2008 and 2009. Five yearslater, European governmentsare still struggling to recoverafter they pumped some e600billion into propping up floun-dering banks.

The implementation of thereform plan will start in No-vember, when the EuropeanCentral Bank will assume directsupervision of the biggestlenders in the Eurozone.

A separate authority, calledthe Single Resolution Mecha-nism, will have a e55 billionfund to dissolve or restructurefailing banks.

OPINION polls have confirmedLabour’s continuing slide in pop-ular support, but senior party fig-ures have gone further andadmitted it will be a challenge toretain even a single seat in theupcoming EU elections.

The most recent Irish TimesIpsos/MRBI poll showed Labour slip-ping by a further point down to 8 percent, although in Dublin the figurewas slightly higher at 11 per cent.

Nationally, Fianna Fáil and FineGael were neck on neck at 25 percent, with Sinn Féin and Independ-

ents also on 21 per cent each.In the last elections in 2009,

Labour won three MEP seats, withProinsias de Rossa getting 20 per centof the Dublin vote. Sitting MEP EmerCostello is considered to have a fight-ing chance to retain that seat thistime around, but she remains a goodway off De Rossa’s tally.

In the constituency of IrelandSouth, current Labour MEP Phil Pren-dergast is looking less likely to holdon to her seat. The former Senator re-placed Alan Kelly when he won a Dáilseat in 2011, but Prendergast does

not enjoy the same support as fellowSouth MEPs Sean Kelly of Fine Gaeland Brian Crowley of Fianna Fáil.

In the Midlands Northwest con-stituency, former barrister and Sena-tor Lorraine Higgins will fly the flagfor Labour but is considered unlikelyto take a seat.

Despite their grim prospects,Labour is expected to spend aboute100,000 funding the campaign ofeach of its three candidates for theEuropean elections on May 23.

MEPs have voted in favour of plans to tighten upproduct safety requirements, including making‘made in’ labelling mandatory for non-food prod-ucts.

The European Parliament supported the proposal toreplace the current voluntary system, claiming that com-pulsory ‘made in’ labels would improve traceability andthus strengthen consumer protection.

Under the current system, about 10 per cent of goodscannot to traced back to the manufacturer.

“This is a big step forward for transparency in theproduct supply chain and that’s good for consumers,” saidthe Danish author of the report on product safety, Christel

Schaldemose. She said the ‘made in’ labelling should apply to al-

most all goods sold on the internal market, with a fewexceptions such as medicine.

MEPs also called for tougher penalties for firms sellingnon-compliant or potentially dangerous products.

And, they asked the European Commission to drawup a blacklist of firms “repeatedly found to intentionallyinfringe”. They also suggested that a pan-European data-base should be compiled of product-related injuries suf-fered by consumers.

The legislation must still be approved by memberstates before it becomes law.

Sam is a gentle soul whohasn't really adapted well to kennel life, so we wouldlove to find him an experienced dog-owning homewhere he would be given time to settle in and enjoyhis new surroundings. Sam loves to play with his balland also loves his food. He's a clever guy so he woulddefinitely enjoy some training games with his newowner. If you think you can offer Sam the loving home he de-serves, contact Dogs Trust on 01-8791000.They are based in Finglas, just off exit 5 on the M50.Map and directions can be found on their websitewww.dogstrust.ie. When dogs live with hu-mans, the humans become thedog's pack. For the relationshipto succeed, humans must be-come the pack leader.

The mistake is made whenthe humans in the pack onlygive the dog love, and overlookits other needs. To a dog, con-stant affection without rules andlimits goes against its instinct.

While dogs enjoy beinggiven affection, it does not sat-isfy the animal and it is not whatmakes them well balanced, sta-ble minded, secure and happy.

Dogs love affection, how-ever that alone does not makethem happy; satisfying its in-stincts do.

You need to provide properemotional stability in order toachieve this, and showing youhave an orderly pack with rulesto follow is what the dog needs.

Giving your dog affection isimportant for the human, andenjoyed by the dog, but must bedone at the correct times. A dogis an animal and does not pos-sess the same reasoning skills asa human.

Dogs do have emotions, buttheir emotions are different thanthose of humans. They feel joywhen they know you arepleased, they feel sad whensomeone dies.

However, they do not pre-meditate or plan ahead, and donot dwell in the past or future. They live for whatever is hap-pening at the moment.

Humans and dogs can onlypeacefully coexist when thedogs are in the follower role.Human society cannot allowdogs to bark, growl, snap at, orbite another human in order totell them they are not happywith what they are doing.

If our dogs get away and arerunning free, it cannot be thedog who decides when theymust come back. We cannot letthe dog decide when it is OK forus to leave for work or who is al-lowed to walk into your homeand who is not. We cannot letthem decide who is allowed totouch ‘their’ ball or sit in ‘their’chair.

Dogs that flip back and forthfrom leader to follower are al-

ways testing to see where theystand. Most do not want the po-sition and give it up easily, butstill have the nagging instinct totake over when they senseweakness.

These dogs are not trulyhappy either, because theynever really know who is goingto be leading at any given mo-ment and therefore cannot feel

secure.Making sure you are the

leader of the pack ensures thatyou have a confident, well bal-anced dog who is content withtheir role in your family set up.

Next week we will give youadvice on how to make sure youare the pack leader in yourhouse. We will also cover basictraining exercises and give you

tips on how to make sure yourdog understands your com-mands completely and reactsquickly to your training.

ISPCC toolkit to help tackle bullyingJudy Sweeney

I AM a strong believer that every child should not bethe subject of bullying, be it at home, in the schooland the wider environment.

Yet bullying concerns con-tinue to surface again andagain. Its level of impact, bothin the short term and long term, remain an issue that needs aconcerted response from thewhole community.

One way to help combatbullying in schools is the imple-mentation of the Irish Societyfor the Prevention of Cruelty toChildren (ISPCC) Anti-Bullying‘Shield My School Programme’,a self-evaluation toolkit to assistteachers to consider a set of ev-idence informed statementsand questions in relation totheir own Anti-Bullying policy.

Recently I was delighted tobe part of the ISPCC team thatassisted the teachers of a schoolto review their Anti-Bullyingpolicy.

In a relaxed atmosphere theteachers openly chatted anddiscussed the series of ques-tions raised by the ISPCC Anti-Bullying toolkit.

The method used was to in-clude as many teachers as pos-sible, deemed important togain buy in for the new Anti-Bullying policy.

Some questions highlightedthe need to involve parents, pupils and the wider commu-nity.

At the completion of eachheading, a note was taken ofpoints agreed and points wherefurther action was required.

The session gave an openspace for which the teachersand principal could voice anyconcerns or questions, bothamongst themselves and tapinto the useful resource of theISPCC staff member.

April is the ISPCC Anti-Bully-ing awareness month and thewell-known charity will beholding a number of initiativesto help combat bullying.

The campaign is known asthe ‘Shield Campaign’ and issymbolised by a distinctive blueshield pin that can be worn byall its supporters.

The thinking behind this isthat every day ISPCC volunteersand staff work as shields - pro-tecting, supporting and listen-ing to children.

The benefit of this toolkitwill not only support the chil-dren, but also the school, family

and wider community. I believe the ISPCC toolkit is

a welcome addition to help theteachers implement a best Anti-Bullying practice policy.

This toolkit is a highly effec-tive means to help combat bul-lying and it will make for a saferschool and ultimately a bettersociety.

For more information on thetoolkit you can log on towww.ispcc.ie orwww.ispcc/ie/toolkit or call 01-2342000.

cacy Volunteer at the Irish

LIFETIME GUARANTEED!

So if you want to lose a stone and a half for the holidays or you have a larger amountof weight to lose then this program is the perfect launch pad to a new you.

The course facilitator is Sharon Tinkler. Sharon is the founder of Stepping Out which went on to become the largest dance fitness company in the British Isles. She also devised the incredibly popular

Salsa Slims program which has had over 70,000 members in Ireland alone over the last ten years. She has made numerous TV and radio appearances and been the subject of many newspaper features

on matters relating to fitness and health.

At the launch of the BODYSLIMS program Sharon tells us HThis course has been a year in the making and testing. I have been lucky to be part of a great organisation that produced outstanding results for

people but I wanted to do more. I wanted to be able to run a weight loss program where if we donIt get you the results we guarantee, then we give you your money back. I was determined to remove the

uncertainty for you but still make it effective and fun. IIm delighted to say that with this ground breaking program I can offer you that guarantee: lose at least a stone and a half or itIs absolutely free.

Another huge driver for me was price. Programs similar to this but offering far less and no guarantee are costing between 700 and 1,500 euro. That's out of

the price range for many people today so I was determined to make this program available to as many people as possible and for 100 euro for ten

weeks with the guarantee I can promise everyone they will be getting more than their money's worth many times over.

I have been lucky that other experts in their fields have bought into what I'm doing and the team I have put together would be my dream team

for weight loss. But I can assure everyone that like all previous Stepping Out courses there is a huge emphasis on fun with plenty of surprises

along the way. Enjoy rather than endure has always been the mantra for our courses. And i know people will enjoy this course. I always

design a course with one question in mind, would I want to do it myself? The answer to that question is a resounding yes. So if you want to

just drop a stone and a half to get into shape for summer or if it's the launch pad for losing a larger amount of weight please give us a try,

you will not regret it and remember we've left you nothing to lose but the weight!T

And no, there+s no dancing on this course, well, except for you dancing with joy at your incredible results!

BODYSLIMS is available in two locations currently north side in the Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport starting monday the 28th April

or south side The Stillorgan Park Hotel starting tuesday the 29th April.

New DS concept car unveiled at motor showA NEW DS concept car will be presented at the Beijing Motor Show later this month. DS 5LS R is anall-new and unique version of the DS 5LS, which combines top-level performance with luxury styling.

Recently launched in China, DS5LS is a bold, striking addition to theChinese market, standing out fromthe crowd with its distinctive styling, including the sculptural and presti-gious ‘DS Wings’ grille, which char-acterises new DS models.

The DS 5LS R concept car empha-sises the dynamic character of theproduction version, highlighting themodel’s athletic lines.

The unveiling of DS 5LS R followson from the DS3 Cabrio Racing andDS4 Racing concepts, as Citroën con-tinues to push boundaries in per-formance, design and innovation.

A nod to Citroën’s World RallyChampionship pedigree, DS 5LS Rboasts a high performance power-train, underpinned by a 1.6-litreturbo petrol engine that develops

300bhp and torque of 400 Nm.The chassis has been lowered by

15mm, compared to the productionversion and the concept has widerfront tracks and a sequential gear-box, controlled by paddles behindthe steering wheel.

High-precision development hasbeen applied to the chassis, brakesand suspension, while the focus onperformance is visually underscoredby the extensive use of real carbonfibre components.

DS 5LS R remains faithful to theDS spirit of innovation and luxury, making a bold first impression.

The sports styling is comple-mented by an anodised CarmineRed paint with a matt metallic finish. The concept confirms its ‘R’ statuswith wide side stripes in matt car-

bon grey on the front doors. The ‘R’signature features extensivelyaround the exterior of the concept –on the bonnet, at the rear and onthe sides of the car.

Further carbon fibre componentsinclude the side signature trim, which extends across the top of theside windows to the boot, cuttingthrough the rear quarter panel witha subtly drawn shark fin. The ‘DSWings’ grille is finished in carbongrey dark chrome and the sporty 20-inch wheels are sculpturally de-signed and carbon-coloured tomatch the polished aluminium onthe exterior and the touches ofCarmine Red.

The Beijing Motor Show takesplace at the China International Ex-hibition Centre from April 20-29.

EMPLOYMENT/BUSINESS• To sponsor or advertise on this page call 01 8162902

It can be frustratingtrawling through job adverts(often after a day’s work),frustrating having to decipherjargon-laden job specs andfrustrating when, afteridentifying a role interestingenough to apply for, there isno reply - Nothing.

People often try toincrease their chances ofsuccess by applying formultiple jobs, but the key isthe quality of the application, not the quantity of CVsforwarded.

An employer’s time islimited. Although essential toa successful company, recruitment is often seen asan added burden of work.Managers with their ownheavy schedule can find itdifficult to find time toconcentrate on fillingvacancies and as a resultbeing the most qualifiedcandidate does not guaranteeyou success. Below I outline afew tips on how to betteryour chances of gettingnoticed and landing that newjob.

*Be available – If youwant to leave your job, makesure you are available tograsp the opportunities to do

Increase your chances of getting that jobCormac Spencer

FOR people either unemployed, or unhappy in their job, looking for a new opportunity can be an exasperatingprocess.

so. Make sure you are readily

contactable. Put your homeand mobile number as wellas an email address on yourCV.

Keep your phonepowered up and if you can’ttake a call in work, respondat the first opportunity. Mostemployers will be flexiblewith early or late interviewtimes, but if it has to beduring working hours try tomake yourself available.

*Follow up – Once youhave sent your CV, wait for afew hours before calling toconfirm it has been received.

For many roles I recruitfor, I receive upwards of 100applications. Many applicantsaren’t suitable, but it stilltakes the same amount oftime to open and read eachCV.

I’m a recruiter, so I don’tmiss much! However, consider a hiring managerwho has a full schedule inaddition to 100 CVs toexamine. Some CVs willinevitably fall through thecracks. Make sure yoursdoesn’t suffer that fate.

*Follow through – Onceyou have the person

recruiting for the job on thephone don’t waste theopportunity.

Use the time to make yourpitch for the job. Your CV isalready in front of them sopush that advantage home tomake sure an employer is inno doubt as to your suitabilityand availability. Most peoplewant an easy life, and mostpeople also don’t like to sayno. An employer will weighup the time it will take tolook through another inboxfull of CVs versus the time itwould take to interview theplausible candidate on theend of the line and plump forthe latter.

You may start the phonecall as just another applicant, but a convincing pitch couldmean finishing one stepcloser to securing the job.

*Use a recruiter – I admitto some bias here, but theadvice is solid! Using arecruiter can give access to anemployer that it is difficult togain as a direct applicant.

As a recruiter I speak tomy clients every day of theweek. I know what they wantin a CV, I know what they liketo hear in an interview and Iknow how to pitch anapplicant to get that interviewin the first place.

By using the services of arecruiter you have someonewith expertise searching andadvocating for you all day

every day. Recruiters alsohave access to roles that arenot advertised publically.Employers often won’t wantvacancies publicised, so arecruiter can give you accessto the jobs you are looking

for but may never find onyour own.

If you find the process ofsearching for a new job islike banging your head off abrick wall, remember thatlike most things it is better to

work smarter than workharder. Identify the jobs youreally want and target them.

By using the tips outlinedabove you should reducefrustration and increase yourchances of success.

Minister Burtonhosts employer

briefing MINISTER for Social Protection, Joan Burton, hosted anemployer briefing in Dublin last week where she outlined toalmost 500 employers the range of supports available fromthe Department which can help to grow their business.

It was the last of six majorbriefings arranged by theDepartment of Social Protectionthroughout the country and issupported by IBEC, ChambersIreland, CIPD and ISME. The lastevent took place in DublinCastle.

Minister Burton said the aimof the briefings was toemphasise to employers thatthe Department has a range ofsupports, such as the JobsPluswage subsidy scheme, whichcan help them to expand.

“As the recent ESRI reportindicates, we have moved froma vicious circle of noinvestment, no growth and nojobs to a virtuous circle – wehave exited the bailout, theeconomy is growing again, employers are expanding, andwe are getting people back towork,” she stated.

“The most recent Central

Statistics Office data shows that61,000 more people were injobs at the end of 2013, andunemployment has fallen froma crisis peak of 15.1 per cent to11.8 per cent now.

“But this is still too high, which is why I am determinedto increase the pace of theprogress we are making.

“Employers are absolutelycentral to this - every time anemployer can create a job theyhelp us take one more steptowards a sustained economicrecovery.”

Minister Burton said theGovernment and theDepartment were committed tomaking it as simple as theycould for employers to hire.

“We are also committed tomaking it as attractive as wecan for employers to hirepeople who are long-termunemployed,” she added.

Ask NevilleQ: Hi Neville, our kitchen cabinets are stained, emeraldgreen wood, which I adored when we built the housebut after 20 years we need a change. The walls and tiles are white and my table and chairsare dark oak, so I am open to changing the wall colourtoo. I need some inspiration that will last anotherdecade or two. Thanks.

Stained wood for a new country kitchen

A: You’re in luck. I have trans-formed many stained woodenkitchen cabinets over theyears and you’ll be glad toknow that this is a relativelystraightforward renovation jobthat has a wonderful resultwhen done well.

Now, while I did say that itis straight forward, re-paintingover stained wood can betime-consuming. Like spillingred wine on a cream carpet, stained wood paint is not justcoated on the cabinet surfaces, but is soaked through and

clings to the fibre of the wood,so it takes a little longer to pre-pare for painting.

You must start by sandingdown the surface of the cabi-nets with some sandpaper. Thisdoesn’t have to be too coarse, just enough to leave a surfacethat is not slick or glossy as thepaint will hold better on arougher finish.

You will then need to applya primer to your wood, beforepainting. Ensure that theprimer has dried thoroughlybefore you start to paint.

And now for the fun part! Interms of your cabinets, a colourthat is both stylish and timelessis Milk White in Quick DryGloss. It is a rich shade ofcream that will make a refresh-ing change from the green.

I suggest using Milk Whiteon the trimmings such as skirt-ing boards and window frames, too, to create a synergythroughout the room.

For the walls, a stunningmatch would be Seldom Seen;a pale grey tone that is verychic. With your dark oak furni-ture set against it, this colourscheme will resemble a com-fortable, stylish countrykitchen.

The wooden element in yourkitchen is really what makes

this look, so be sure to stick toraw, earthy accessories.Wooden picture frames, strawmats and wicker basketswould all work wonderfully to

complete this stunning decor. If you have exposed beams

or wooden doors, keep thesein their natural state by top-ping them up with a coat of

varnish. This scheme is onethat is truly timeless and willtake you through anotherdecade of happy memoriesI’m sure. Happy decorating!
