Preface

Each year, the Office of Cooperative Education and Career Placement, with support fromthe Computer Resource Center and the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, conductsa study on the employment and continuing education status of the previous year's graduates.

This year, a survey for the class of 1996 was distributed to 1669 graduates. Two mailingsand a follow-up telephone survey produced a total response rate of 82.7 percent. A samplequestionnaire is provided in Appendix B.

Results from the survey indicate that, with small exception, 1996 graduates are employedand/or continuing their professional studies. The statistical breakdown reveals that 85.7 percentof the 1996 graduates are employed (53.3 percent full-time), 36.9 percent are continuing theireducation (28.5 percent full-time) and 4.1 percent continue to seek employment. Informationcomparing responses of graduates from the classes of 1993, 1994 and 1995 can be found inAppendix C.

Since the Report on Career Placement and Transfer of 1996 Graduates is based on a self-report survey, some caution in interpretation e gg ed. The following information shouldprovide further clarification of the dat veragesalaries ed on a 40-hour week, are reportedonly for education related em merit and may show an unex d broad range due to datacollected from both gra es in entry-level positions and profe Si nal ployed graduateswho attend CC r further professional development.

CCRI offers two Associate in Science degree programs in the computer area. The Computer Programming degree

program prepares the student to enter a modern programmingenvironment. It stresses problem definition and solutiondesign using different programming languages in the development of applications. The Microcomputing degree programprepares the student to enter a workplace that emphasizes the use of the personal computer as a stand-alone device or in anetworked computer environment. This program would prepare an individual to be employed in computer user supportservices. The college also offers one year certificate options, which emphasize technical work only, for students whoalready hold a Bachelor's Degree or have two years of work experience in a computer-oriented profession. The careerpaths of graduates have been changing in recent years; instead of working in programming positions which typically lead to

systems analysts positions at banks or insurance companies, students are going to work for major companies to man the

"help desk."
