Hammurabi’s Code of Law

I. Hammurabi’s Code -In 1790 BC or BCE, king Hammurabi wrote the

world’s first large collection of laws. -There were 282 specific laws.II. Legal Principles (beliefs) of Hammurabi -”An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” -Punishments were based on the social class of

the lawbreaker. -Wealthy citizens would pay fines, commoners

(regular people) would face physical punishment. -Government had a responsibility for what

occurred in society
