Mini-Lesson: Task 3 Task 3 on the Regents asks you to identify a
central idea and support it with a writing strategy.
What is a central idea?
What are some writing strategies?
In fiction, it is a theme or large idea that most of the events in the story can relate to.
In nonfiction, it is a thesis, a claim, or the author’s main point.
Logos, ethos, pathos
Characterization, metaphor, simile, imagery, conflict, tone
Mini-Lesson: CharacterizationDeidre Right. And people are saying his dark side, and his-- there was
some notation about he was very controlling. I thought, “I wonder if he was really very controlling.” So there’s that. The cell phone thing for us and Justin Wolfe is that they used the cell phone records to say they cabin out the period of time when the shooter is driving to the place where the victim is and shooting him and then coming back. So they put those up on a board in the courtroom and say “look at this. He calls him right before he commits the murder, and he calls him right after he commits the murder.” Then you get everybody’s phone records, right? All these kids that are buying pot, smoking pot, selling pot, and everybody’s calling each other all the time. So then you stop and stand back and say: “Well, so what are they trying to say? That Justin Wolfe and these kids, these upper-middle class kids are so stupid that they get in the car and call and say: ‘Okay! I’m on my way to murder him. Okay! I just murdered him! I’m coming back now.’” You know what I mean? Who does that? Now, all these witnesses are saying: “Oh no, we were just all calling each other to buy pot.” Those calls that are infused with meaning by the prosecution’s theory have no meaning in space.
How is Justin characterized? How does Deidre describe her client, Justin? What is her central idea? What is she trying to prove through characterizing him this way?
Where is Justin characterized?Highlight or underline lines that describe him.
Bonus: Circle any metaphors.
Mini-Lesson: Characterization
Introduction (Two sentences)Background information: Deidre tells Sarah about her innocent client on the podcast Serial.Claim/ Thesis: Deidre uses _______________ to portray the
Writing strategy
central idea that ______________________. Central idea
Sample Body Paragraph (ICEE)Introduce the quote: Deidre imagines her client saying Cite and write the quote “Okay! I’m on my way to murder him. Okay! I just murdered him! I’m coming back now” (lines 16-17). Explain how the quote is an example of that writing strategy: Deidre characterizes her client by imagining what he said. Specify the exact word or phrase that reveals the writing strategy She implies that he would be fine with murdering someone when she writes “Okay!” twice (lines 16-17). The exclamation mark also implies that he may even be excited about the murder he committed. Explain how the quote is an example of the central idea Deidre characterizes her client as asinine to show that it is highly unlikely he would make phone calls like that. Her characterization of him stresses that the argument that he made calls before and after the murder is inane.
characterization
the argument against her client is asinine.
Sarah KoenigDon was Hae’s new boyfriend. The police considered his alibi iron-clad, he was working at LensCrafters all day. But, see, this is how it is with Deirdre. A conversation with her never seems to begin exactly. It’s already there, on going, her thoughts churning, and you just kinda join in when you’re ready and hope that you can keep up. She is not a small talker or a beater around of bushes. You discuss whatever it is you came to discuss full-on, looking it squarely in the face. She has no time for bullshit. Not because she’s above it or anything but because she actually has no time. She’s one of the busiest and most curious people I’ve ever met.
