Striking back at Germany

• Casablanca Conference- President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill planed to increase the bombing of Germany in an effort to destroy its military, industrial, and economic system and hurt the German morale.

• The new massive bombing campaign against Germany did not destroy their economy or hurt their morale.

• It did cause a severe oil shortage and destroyed railroad and aircrafts in Germany.

• Allies in France then had total control of the air.

Invasion of Sicily

• General Dwight D. Eisenhower was the overall commander of the invasion of Sicily.

• By August 18, 1943 Germans had evacuated the island

• Mussolini was placed under arrest. • September 8, 1943- Italy surrendered.• Hitler sent German troops to seize control of Italy

and put Mussolini back in power.• May 1944- Germany retreated.

Landing in France

• Operation Overlord- the code name for the planned invasion of France by the Allies.

• General Eisenhower was selected to command the invasion.

• The Allies had the advantage of surprise- the Germans did not know when or where they would strike.

• The date for the invasion became known as D-Day.

Invasion of Normandy

• The invasion of Normandy began shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944.

• The Allied forces had little trouble capturing the Utah Beach and moving inland.

• The American forces at Omaha Beach met intense German fire.

• Thousands of Americans died in the attack but it was successful.
