Dear friends,
Welcome to the 2015 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase, a celebration of the achievements of Iowa students involved in their high school musical productions . Throughout the year, the Des Moines Civic Center stage becomes home for top touring Broadway talent . Tonight, we celebrate Iowa’s rising stars as the next generation of musical theater artists .
For most high school extracurricular activities, such as athletics and music, there are many opportunities for students to be recognized and to learn from watching their peers . The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, now in its third year, was created to provide similar opportunities for students involved in high school musical theater .
It’s a joy to honor students from 30 participating high schools for their extraordinary achievements both on stage and behind the scenes . We are grateful to all of the students and teachers for their contributions to tonight’s program . Special thanks go to the Iowa theater professionals who volunteered to serve as adjudicators for the program this year .
We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s Awards Showcase on Monday, June 6, 2016 .
From all of us at Des Moines Performing Arts, congratulations to everyone involved!

From the President & CEO
About the Iowa High School Musical Theater AwardsThe Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, presented by Des Moines Performing Arts, is an education-based program that provides support for high school musical theater programs and highlights the importance of arts education . For 2014-2015, all high schools within a 125 mile radius of Des Moines Performing Arts were invited to participate .
The program consists of three parts:
Adjudication Throughout the school year, panels of community adjudicators comprised of performing arts educators and professionals attend and review each participating production . Students and directors receive valuable feedback that can be used to grow and strengthen their future work .
Learning Opportunities Special learning opportunities, including master classes with visiting Broadway artists and technical workshops, are offered to participating schools to help students and directors strengthen their craft and understanding of musical theater .
Awards and Recognition Based on reviews and scores, schools and students receive awards that honor their achievements in categories such as choreography, design, supporting performer, lead performer and overall musical production . The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program is designed to be celebratory rather than competitive in nature . Any student or school at an outstanding level is recognized for their achievement . Multiple winners may be named in each category as performances merit .
The year culminates in a professionally produced Awards Showcase held at the Des Moines Civic Center . The event features student performances and the opportunity for students from participating schools to collaborate with guest Broadway professionals .

More than 50,000 students at 1,000 high schools compete annually in the National High School Musical Theater Awards. Tonight’s Triple Threat Award recipients will join their peers from across the country in New York City for a theater intensive and one-night-only showcase on Broadway.

Reviewing and honoring school
productions is just one part of the equation for the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards . Another important part is designing opportunities to help schools and students grow in their musical theater skills .
In many cases, these opportunities bring students face-to-face with Broadway professionals during their time at the Des Moines Civic Center through national tours in the Willis Broadway Series .
Earlier this year, students worked on song interpretation in vocal audition master classes taught by Tricia Tanguy of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Kristine Reese of Pippin.
“I am really thankful for such an amazing opportunity . It really helped give me insight of what it takes to be in musical theater
at a professional level,” reflected Mercedes Castillo, a sophomore at North High School, after working with Tanguy .
The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program also provides learning opportunities for students who work behind the scenes . After participating in a workshop with local stage manager Janet Albanese, students had
the opportunity to meet Jack McLeod, stage manager of Kinky Boots. McLeod took students on a backstage tour and demonstrated how he calls cues for the blockbuster hit .
“[Jack] told us that the most important things he knew about stage management he had learned not through classes and handbooks, but through actually stage managing,” shared Charlotte

That insight stayed with Charlotte and inspired her to apply to be an assistant stage manager for the 2015 Awards Showcase . Now she is one of eight students listening and calling cues, helping with microphone transitions, and making the magic of the Awards Showcase happen as they work alongside theater professionals .
“We’re committed to continuing to grow the learning opportunities available to students,” said Karoline Myers, Des Moines Performing Arts Education Manager . “Students are doing amazing work at their schools, but connecting them with professionals can inspire them and help them take their skills to the next level .”
Jack McLeod, stage manager for Kinky Boots, shares insight about the field of stage management in a workshop for tech students .
“It really helped give me insight of what it takes to be in musical theater at a professional level.”

Your support allows us to shoot for the stars!
“The performing arts can be a powerful force
for change in our society by allowing a wide audience to ‘go places’ and ‘meet
people’ otherwise not available to them, to acquaint us with other cultures and traditions and even our own history in an engaging and immediate way that no other medium can achieve and to do that in a shared experience which is ‘LIVE THEATER’ . Appearing on stage for all to see can be an exhilarating experience filled with potential while fraught with risk - not a venture for the faint of heart but only for the courageous and committed . Thank you for your dedication and best of luck to you all .”
