Private offices are now at the center of 22sqaured’s two floors, employee work stations are situated by windows, small collaborative spaces are prevalent and writable surfaces such as white boards and glass walls, are everywhere. 22squared’s new LEED Gold headquarters reduced space needs from three floors to two, contributing to a collaborative environment that has increased knowledge sharing by 20 percent, according to Gensler’s Work Performance Index. Make Space is a recent book that details how to build environments that inspire creativity, productivity, and interaction. Created through the Stanford University d.school program and its Environments Collaborative Initiative, this book shares effective interior strategies for designing workplace environments. (Calm)space by Haworth Haworth and designer Marie-Virginie Berbet presented (Calm)space, a power nap pod at Orgatex 2012. Employees can easily specify the length of nap, as well as a custom sound and light cycle to gently awake them. By allowing for sleep on the job, it benefits the health and productivity of a company’s employees.

i-Sit Resting Chair designed by Design Concern A|S

The i-Sit resting chair, designed by Design Concern A|S, aims to bridge the gap between mainstream furniture and assistive furniture for seniors. The project team looked at how a more functional and competitive chair could be designed by involving end-users. The resulting design is now being called the new Danish Design Icon.

Inclusive Design: A Universal Need by Linda Nussbaumer describes how a more accessible and aesthetically pleasing environment for a population of varied abilities and ages can be designed through an inclusive approach. The text details the benefits of inclusive design in residential and commercial environments, product design and even technology.

Cizmia Home Injection ExperienceCollaboration between Smart Design, UCB & OXO

After a collaborative effort among Smart Design, UCB (a global biopharmaceutical leader) and OXO (a celebrated consumer products company), people with rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s Disease finally have relief. The Cizmia home injection is the first of its kind and was tailored specifically for its intended users. The goal of the product was to keep the design simple and the process quick so patients can quickly get back to enjoying every day life. The three groups approached wellness design holistically, joining function, form, and aesthetics.

Macquarie Bank Ltd. Headquarters | Sydney, Australia

Founded in 2003 by Christian Daniels and Jonathan Mark, EGG Office focuses on providing creative direction for design through brand identity in environmental graphics, print, web, and architectural signage. The California-based company has recently branched worldwide, with a recent project in Sydney for Macquarie Bank Ltd. Headquarters. The Macquarie Group needed a comprehensive signage and graphics program for its new headquarters in Sydney. Using central company values such as transparency, a global outlook, and collaborative work behavior, EGG created a dynamic environment through the use of environmental graphics.

Designed by KMD Architects and Stevens + Associates, 525 Golden Gate is a 13-story building that is slated to achieve a LEED Platinum rating from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The building houses new offices for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and other spaces for government agencies. In order to achieve LEED Platinum, key sustainability features include on-site clean energy generation through photo voltaic, 100 percent of waste water treated on site, use of lowflow toilets, 45 percent daylight harvesting, and the consumption of 55 percent less energy and a 32 percent less electricity demand from the main power grid.
