Welcome to the second edition of the Dutch Jazz & World Meeting! (or the 9th edition if you include its predecessors Dutch Jazz Meeting and Dutch Blend Meeting). Whereas Amsterdam’s ring of canals were featured two years ago, providing a fairytale background

shrouded in snow – imbuing it with a typically Amsterdam dimen-sion – this year also highlights the nautical character of the nation’s capital: all locations are on the water, international visitors will be housed on boats, trade dinners will be held on the water-front and water taxis will ensure fast and efficient transport.

Still, DJWM is naturally all about music: this edition features an-other unprecedented programme of top notch artists: 26 official showcases (supplemented with several so-called ‘off DJWM shows’) ensure a unique inside view of the current Dutch jazz and world music scene. Everything framed in an abundance of informative presentations and wide variety of networking oppor-tunities among the several hundred national and international music professionals.

The DJWM team hopes you will be able to combine good business with pleasure!

inforMAl oPening night & officiAl AfterPArtyThe DJWM will kick off the proceedings with an Informal Opening Night on Thursday October 4th, in the renowned Bimhuis jazz venue. Reed player David Kweksilber will perform with his acclaimed big band, with which he regularly turns the Bimhuis into a lab for cutting edge big band research, raising this vintage jazz format to new levels of sophistication. On Saturday October 6th, the new North Sea Jazz Club at Amsterdam’s picturesque Westergasfabriek area (transport will be provided) will host the official DJWM Afterparty. With the kind cooperation of Jam de la Crème, the Dutch jazz and world scene’s most exciting players will take part in a jam session.

26 jazz and world music ensembles will present inspirational showcase performances at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Bimhuis and Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ on Friday the 5th and

Saturday the 6th of October.

showcAseWelcome to the second edition of the largest ‘business-to-business’ showcase and networking event for international jazz and world music professionals in the Netherlands. This meeting will be attended by internationally renowned delegates: festival directors, venue promoters, booking agencies and media representatives.

conferenceBesides presenting showcases, the 2012 Dutch Jazz & World Meet-ing is also a conference, with two keynote speakers addressing con-temporary issues on the international jazz and world music scenes, incisive and practical panel discussions on how to break into foreign markets, and a large trade fair, where Dutch impresarios, bookers, acts and other stakeholders will present themselves. The official opening of DJWM 2012 will be held on Friday morning when New York Times jazz and pop critic Ben Ratliff gives his Keynote Lecture on Jazz. The Keynote on World Music will be given on Saturday morning by Lucy Durán, BBC presenter, prolific world music produc-er and Lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

MCN invited two distinguished, independent programmers (Michelle Kuypers (North Sea Jazz, Mojo) and Wim Westerveld (Music Meeting, Chazz) to

select 26 Dutch jazz and world acts with international potential and a highly distinctive approach towards contemporary jazz and world music. In terms of the criteria for inviting delegates, priority was given to bookers from festivals and venues with a considerable (inter)na-tional reputation; secondary consideration was given to intermediar-ies (agents, press, foundations), followed by freelance producers. The main countries considered were MCN’s ‘target countries’ which correspond with those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which finan-cially supports our invited delegates programme. These are the USA, UK, Belgium, France and Germany. We also asked organizations abroad with cultural components such as embassies and consulates to make suggestions, as well as partner organizations and selected musicians to nominate guests.

Muziekgebouw aan ’t ijThe Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ opened its doors to the public in the spring of 2005. The spec-tacular building has become Amsterdam’s Concert Hall of the 21st Century, with an excit-ing, contemporary programme which continually forges links with other eras, styles, cultures and art forms. The Muziekge-bouw aan ’t IJ shows current musical developments in the form of special series, festivals, multimedia concerts and exhibi-tions. The Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ consists of a multifunctional state of the art chamber music hall, seating 725, several foyers for workshops and master classes, a smaller hall seating 100, and extensive conference and catering facilities.www.muziekgebouw.nl

BimhuisSince its inception in 1974, the name Bimhuis has stood for high-minded improvised music. Before the jazz club moved to its current address on the IJ, it was based for about thirty years in a renovated former furniture showroom in Amsterdam. The Bimhuis became the most im-portant Dutch venue for jazz and improvised music, and cherished by such famous inter-national band leaders as Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and Sun Ra. Today, the new Bimhuis remains an im-portant hub in the international network of improvising musi-cians. It organizes about 300 concerts a year, from main-stream to avant-garde.www.bimhuis.nl

conservatorium van AmsterdamThe Conservatorium van Am-sterdam (CvA) is the largest and most diverse conservatory in the Netherlands. The building is located at the center of a cul-tural area, that includes the ‘Muziekgebouw’ with its three concert halls for classical music and jazz. The Conservatorium, designed by architect Frits van Dongen, is based on the Japa-nese way of building, the ‘En-gawa model’, where the cor-ridors are situated next to the outer walls to ward off outside noise. There are four halls; the large Bernard Haitinkzaal, the Amsterdam Blue Note for jazz and pop concerts, the Sweel-inckzaal, a recital hall and the Theaterzaal. www.ahk.nl/conservatorium

and ‘What do you mean by world music?’Music Center the Netherlands has never been in the business of making nitpicking definitions, but of trying to organise worth-while meetings at national and international level on behalf of the professional music world in the Netherlands, with its entire infrastructure of bookers, pro-grammers, venues and festi-vals. Judging by the responses received from the first DJWM (Amsterdam, 2010) the Dutch Jazz Meetings over the years and the Dutch Blend Meeting

T hese questions provoke immediate debate, worse yet, continuing to ask

them simply perpetuates the same positions over and over again. Even though the words ‘classical’ and ‘pop’ are just as slippery when it comes to being unambiguous concepts on which everyone can agree, ‘jazz’ and ‘world music’ are weighed down even more than other genre designations with that eternal question as to what they really mean at all. Usually followed by the standard corol-lary questions: ‘Is this still jazz?’

In 2002, music journalist Jacqueline Oskamp asked

the rhetorical question in her elegant little book

Radicaal Gewoon (Radically Common) whether or

not there was such a thing as Dutch music.

Whereas Oskamp was writing about music composi-

tion, the same question might still be asked about

Dutch jazz and world music. Is there any such thing

as polder jazz? Or typical Dutch world music?

Food for

THOUGHT

Page 13: DJWM 2012 Program

20 21

T he staff of Music Center the Netherlands regards getting these 26 ensem-

bles seen and especially heard worldwide, most of whom are still flying under the radar of in-ternational festivals and clubs, as its top priority. In the words of George Michael: Listen with-out prejudice!

jAïr tchong(on behalf of team DJWM 2012)

O nce musicians have de-cided to eliminate the notion of putting music

into pigeonholes, an organisa-tion supporting the musical arts ought to give free reign to an openness of spirit. If we look back at music history one thing is evident: designating and la-belling genres has been invented by the music industry to serve its own purposes but true musi-cal spirit does not allow itself to be hampered in any way what-soever. A good example is French horn player/composer/arranger Morris Kliphuis (1986) who will be playing at this year’s DJWM with both Kapok and the Hybrid 10tet, but is also regard-ed as a ‘first call’ player of his instrument in the world of con-temporary classical music. Kapok, it must also be noted, found a home in Kytopia, the studio of Holland’s most talked about musical phenomenon in recent years, known as Kyte-man, and so he is no stranger to a pop sensibility, either!

But the most important reason is internal, or rather: artistic. Jazz and such world music sub-genres as salsa, tango, fado and afropop, in terms of music history, have for the most part already experienced their ‘golden ages’. Playing the same tra- ditional repertoire is becoming increasingly regarded as out-dated and a general trend has emerged where those academi-cally trained in jazz and world music are eagerly looking to the other side for inspiration. One could call it convergence. Levantasy allow themselves to be inspired by the harmonic richness of Arabic music, and the Turkish lute-player Göksel Yilmaz seeks collaboration with jazz trumpet player Eric Vloe-imans.

(Rotterdam, 2008) they have proved to be highly successful in achieving their goals. The groups chosen by the inde-pendent jury members at all these MCN meetings have re-ceived international bookings and exposure.

W hy does the DJWM team regard jazz and world to be on the same

playing field? There are good external and internal reasons for this. Externally, in light of the broad spectrum of the music business, in economic terms these disciplines occupy a more modest place than pop or dance. Jazz and world music is usually driven by passionate specialists constantly seeking to promote these ‘niche’ music genres. The smaller scale im-plies an alternative way of work-ing, even though increasing at-tention is being given to the techniques employed by the bigger, more successful pop groups.

H is discours, ‘Listening in the Age of the Cloud’, is adapted from his forthcoming book, ‘Twenty Ways to Listen (to Music)’. With specific references to jazz and world music, he argues

that the most significant advances in the recent history of music may be on the side of the listener rather than the performer; and that lis-teners, with the seemingly endless new resources of digital, wireless, and social media, can finally be as flexible and creative in under-standing sound, processing history, and resisting the limitations and confusions of genre as the musicians we have been following. www.benratliff.com

I n her Keynote World, Durán will focus on what she sees as the ‘compatibilité des humeurs’ between Academia, Biz and Media. Having devoted much of her professional life to balancing her

practical and academic work, Durán argues for the need to forge better links and understanding between the music industry and academia, both of which tend to be suspicious of the value of the other.

Dr lucy Durán is a university lecturer specialising in West Af-rican music, and is based in the Music Department of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University. She has published widely on Mali’s star women singers, on the kora, and on the style of music known as ‘wassoulou’, popular-ised by such artists as Oumou Sangaré. She is also a BBC broadcaster, and has travelled to many countries around the world to record music on loca-tion, giving her special insight into the vulnerability of musical traditions that are deeply em-bedded in local ways of life. She is also a music producer, and has produced many al-bums.

F or several years now international support and promotion of Dutch musicians has been in the hands of Music Center the Netherlands (MCN) and the Performing Arts Fund NL (FPK).

MCN has provided advice and coaching, and has undertaken collec-tive campaigns like DJWM and attendance at Jazzahead (Bremen), APAP (New York), Womex (Copenhagen) and Babelmed (Marseille). MCN is a member of the Europe Jazz Network. FPK has made finan-cial contributions towards travel expenses of Dutch groups. Sadly MCN will cease operations as of January 1st, 2013. In this panel, FPK presents its new internationalization scheme. Arjen Davidse sheds light, for the first time, on new initiatives proposed to ensure the collective international promotion of Dutch music in future. The panel consists of field experts who, in the past, have been beneficiar-ies of collective support both at home and abroad.

DJWM2012 offers the professional participants a panel

programme consisting of informative panels on five countries,

considered focus countries of Music Center the Netherlands:

the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and

Germany. Representatives from these countries will discuss

the specific characteristics of the jazz and world scene in their

country. Presenters, media, agents and other experts will

advise where to begin.

How does it work? How do you break into the certain circuits?

Who do you need to know and how do you get down to busi-

ness? The panels also present examples by Dutch artists who

have managed to achieve results in the specific countries: how

did they approach the scene and why did their efforts succeed?

There will be practical information and the opportunity for

many questions & answers for those who plan to tour these

countries. A panel about the future of international support and

promotion of Dutch artists will kick off the panel program.

F or many musicians the USA is still the promised land: home of jazz, birthplace of salsa, the ultimate ‘land of opportunity.’ But reality is harsher: competition is fierce, European music is not

at the top of presenters’ lists and touring in the USA is no mean financial feat. And even if you do manage to get a tour together, find a local promoter and have not been put off by the complicated and costly visa application procedures, you often end up with a ‘door gig.’ Prestige and status appear to be the only pay-off, and in those terms the USA can prove to be a worthwhile investment; though there are still viable alternatives for how to go about it.

T he UK is both close and isolated at the same time. It’s not that easy for Dutch musicians to make headway on the other side of the North Sea. Yet the UK is enormously important: it is the

birthplace of the marketing of pop music and the preferred location of much of the world’s leading music media, including many record labels and agencies. For world music, the UK is a force to be reck-oned with, with the major WOMAD festival and the two leading publi-cations on world music: Songlines and fROOTS. As for jazz: renowned festivals and venues in the capital are complemented by a lively jazz scene in the rest of the UK. So how can we make stronger connections with these scenes and work towards more concerts of Dutch jazz & world music in the UK?

D utch managers often experience the French music market as being ‘hermetically sealed’ and the language barrier seems to raise another threshold. Yet France is the springboard par

excellence into the international world music scene and since several years Babel Med offers a well received platform for the industry. There is an intricate network of well organised and adventurous jazz festivals, where Dutch jazz musicians have been successful in the past. Thanks to a number of best practices in terms of jazz and world music, the French market keeps a sharper eye than ever before on what the Dutch have to offer. How can we achieve greater success and how much does the language barrier really affect business?

T hat small country, which for many Dutchmen is even closer to home than some of their own provinces to the north and east, where the people even speak the same language in large ar-

eas, presents a flourishing jazz and world music scene. Then how on earth is it so difficult for Dutch artists to gain any ground with their southern neighbours? Why are leading Dutch artists most of the time completely unknown at a one hour drive southwards from Rotterdam and vice versa? And to think that many Belgian cabaret artists and pop groups are warmly embraced in the Netherlands! What kind of barriers do Dutch jazz and world music artists run up against in Bel-gium and how should we deal with them?

G ermany by far is The Netherlands’ music export country #1. Touring the country is easy, it has an enormous network of jazz and world music stages and festivals, and the German

music media and industry are substantial and influential. Surely the WOMEX was conceived in Berlin and every year Jazzahead in Bremen is growing bigger and bigger. A tour in Germany often opens doors to Austria and Switzerland. So it’s not surprising that Germany is given top priority by many Dutch artists wanting to build an interna-tional career. But still it’s easier said than done. The panel of experts will help give more insight on how to work your way in the huge German music infrastructure.

O riginating from The Hague, music aficionadas Janneke Nijhuijs and Evelien Zwart have been talk of the town in the Dutch mu-sic biz with their organized jam sessions under the banner of

Jam de la Crème. It started out as a way to make jazz musicians more aware of their audience while performing, and to lure pop musicians into aiming for a higher level of sophistication while impro-vising. At the top of the list in combining these musical forces, Jam de la Crème became a household name, which did not go unnoticed by those who programmed Sziget, the famous independent festival in Hungary. Janneke and Evelien were asked to bring Jam de la Crème there for a whole week, jamming three hours a day for seven days straight, centered around a Dutch team of musicians, but play-ing with high profile musicians from the Sziget line-up. Jam de la Crème @DJWM will take place in the North Sea Jazz Club, Amster-dam which recently opened this year, something which had been high on the wish list of the famous jazz festival for years.

C omposer and pianist Amina Figarova’s twelfth album, entitled Twelve, is her debut release on the renowned independent German label In + Out. Twelve is suffused with the sense of

adventure, fresh perceptions and creative energy that artists gain from being in the right place at the right time. The album celebrates jazz as international music as well as New York music, the city where jazz gypsies feel most at home. And where Figarova resides several months per year. Her collaboration with US and European musicians and her original repertoire have made her a welcome guest at inter-national festivals such as the Newport Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and venues in Detroit, Paris, Amsterdam and of course New York. Amina’s genuinely beautiful harmonisations accompany those precious moments when the puzzling jostle of dai-ly existence comes into unexpected but deeply satisfying sync.

B araná is the musical crossover concept of Turkish singer/ instrumentalist Behsat Üvez and Dutch reed player Steven Kamperman. The first project in 2002 was a specially com-

missioned composition for the big ensemble Baraná & Co. A recur-rent feature of the Baraná-ensembles is ‘the meeting’ - of old and new music, east and west, composition and improvisation, the com-ing together of strong musical personalities. All these meetings are characterized by the strength with which Baraná combines tradition with the vitality of modern music, thus creating a previously unheard-of language. In its latest incarnation Baraná Elektro Shaman conjures hypnotizing modern grooves that make you believe you yourself are a Turkish nomad on the Asian plains. Band leaders Üvez and Kamperman sought inspiration in mythological Turkish texts about earth, air, water and fire. Raw singing and trance rhythms set the stage for screaming guitar, funky bass lines and sizzling hot saxo-phone improvisations. PRIMAL!

R otterdam based Ziya Ertekin aka DJ Blue Flamingo says: ‘I barter in dreams. That’s what I tell people when they ask me what I do for a living.’ He is a passionate collector of 78 rpm

records, specializing in Afro-Caribbean dance music (including mam-bo, and rumbas from the 50s), obscure rhythm and blues, gospel, African sounds from Congo, Kenya, and what he calls ‘hot jazz jungle-exotica.’ This music archaeologist spins his disks on an old 1957 Garrard RC-88 player, amplified by a Fender Vibroverb decked out in suitably eccentric retro garb, deftly managing to both educate and get his listeners out on the dance floor. He has released three compi-lations to date on Holland’s prestigious Excelsior Recordings label: A Search for CMS, Congo Jazz and 78 RPM. His international appearances include Le Festival d’Ile de France in Paris and Womex both in 2011 and the Roskilde Festival and North Sea Jazz Festival in July 2012.

F ormed around vocalist Monica Akihary & guitarist Niels Brou-wer, Boi Akih has always played in various line-ups since its inception, making music that explores the borders between

world, jazz, improvised and modern classical music. Boi Akih is pre-sented here as a quartet. They are joined by the creative trombonist Wolter Wierbos and drummer Kim Weemhoff. Their latest album Circles in a Square Society takes full advantage of its members per-sonal sound, all of whom add their own musical and lyrical twists to original compositions and cover versions of songs by Jimi Hendrix, David Crosby and Bob Marley. Their playing reveals a tremendous sense of curiosity, inventiveness, humour, feeling and first and fore-most pure musicality. Boi Akih’s music is a tapestry of folk, contem-porary sounds and imaginative improvisations. De Volkskrant wrote: ‘Akihary’s powerful voice remained emotionally charged even in the sound experiments, just as Brouwer imbued abstract passages with warmth.’

L ily’s Déjà Vu is about images. In a search for colours Lily cre-ates a space where reality converges with dreams and spiritu-ality and composed material merges with improvisation. Doors

that welcome us - band and audience alike - to the realm of unex-pected places, where everything takes on another shape or smells a bit like that old familiar coffee. Dwelling in the western world, perfo-rating the walls of spoken language. What is real? Moving music around and aiming for a raw naked sound, the band pulls out all the stops to create a gate connecting our consciousness to an aware-ness of the universe. What the critics have said: “Laubrock’s inven-tive playing (…) creates paradigm-shifting sonic vocabularies.” “Aliens seem to have landed in Celano’s head (… ) he has created a new science.” Drummer Marcos Baggiani (also featured in Royal Improvisers Orchestra) is a fine mischief-maker whose surprising ideas steer the music into unexpected new directions. Perhaps he came up with the subtitle of Lily’s Déjà Vu: ‘music from another ass’.

T he Chambertones are a trio without drums whose name says it all. It explores chamber music and is both melodic and modest. All three musicians are seasoned veterans on the international

jazz circuit and are all bandleaders and composers in their own right. The trio’s music is spacious, warm and provides a great deal of room for each of the three instruments to explore their individual sounds at great length. Their music is all about exploring the full range of the sound of wood. Original tunes and covers are rendered in subtly in-terwoven tapestries of sound. They recently released their album The Ninth Planet. “With fantastic compositions they swirl around one other in a self created world that feels like a warm blanket,” - De Volkskrant. “A superb trio of distinct and adventurous personali-ties who hopefully have entered into an intense and long-lasting rela-tion,” - Trouw.

I nducing the spark: pianist Stevko Busch and saxophonist Paul van Kemenade combine the spirituality of Abdullah Ibrahim with the passion and depth of Russian Orthodoxy and other eastern

sources. It was Busch who indicated a new direction to Van Keme-nade, and the saxophonist who opened up new and wider horizons. This offers a natural connection to the two musicians, each capable of shaping the horizon in their own way, adding wonderful colours and textures to the soundscape. Markus Stockhausen’s brilliant trumpet sound and the colourful palette of the melodic percussionist Markku Ounaskari, broaden the scope of the music, adding comple-mentary lines and layers to the weave. For music to connect and spark, it must be grasped and understood, both by the musicians and by the audience. This quartet plays with spirit, with influences from both east and west, well-chosen and transformed by Stevko Busch and his band mates.

I n his international Hybrid 10tet Dutch pianist and composer Michiel Braam brings together world class musicians from three different musical worlds: the classical Matangi string quartet,

rock rhythm section Pieter Douma and Dirk-Peter Kölsch, and impro-vising horn players Carl Ludwig Hübsch, Nils Wogram and Taylor Ho Bynum. The musicians contribute their personal language to the en-semble, but are also invited to explore new musical worlds. The col-laboration between diverse musical personalities results in a unique stylistic mix. Improvisation and unexpected twists and turns, part and parcel of Braam’s work, play a central role in this project. The Hybrid 10tet had a successful tour and a CD release in 2011. In November 2012 this unique ensemble will be on tour. “Nothing is predictable, everything is original in Michiel Braam’s music,” - De Volkskrant.

J ungle by Night are nine young men from Amsterdam who pro-duce a unique mix of Afrobeat, Ethiojazz, funk, dub and rock. Two years ago, the group was infected with a love for raw Africa

oriented funk and began rehearsing. At a small outdoor festival in Amsterdam, a spark ignited into a fire which has not gone out since. They have successfully toured the Benelux at high profile festivals such as Music Meeting in Nijmegen, Pole Pole in Ghent, North Sea Jazz Festival and Lowlands, as well as having been invited to per-form as the opening act at concerts by Mayer Hawthorne and The Roots & John Legend. Jungle by Night were guests in Paris at shows of their musical godfathers Mulatu Astatke and Orchestre Poly-Ritmo de Cotonou on holy Fela-ground. Former members of Fela Kuti’s backing band who saw them perform then paid them the ultimate compliment by calling them ‘the future of afrobeat.’

K apok loves to venture off the beaten path. In their trademark line up of horn, guitar and drums, the trio sets off in search of new sounds and rhythms, making free, wild and adventurous

music somewhere between jazz, rock and improvisation. There is al-ways a chance they’ll play something completely different than planned. To record their debut album Flatlands, Kapok spent two in-tensive weeks together in the Kytopia studio in Utrecht. They invited a number of guest musicians to join them, including Dutch jazz bass player Ernst Glerum, the Ragazze String Quartet and percussionist Joshua Samson. Together they composed and improvised, and the results were recorded on the analog tape machines of Kytopia Records. Kapok is winner of the Dutch Jazz Competition 2012. NRC about Flatlands: “A jazz album with light, space and imagination (…) Kapok is an extraordinary fusion of instruments.” Jazzenzo: “Disturbingly good (…) an unusual synergy, that effortlessly keeps the attention of the adventurous listener. L evantasy is a project that mixes Arabic, Persian, Jewish and Western styles into what is essentially a jazz environment. It grew out of the Kepera trio that was formed when its members

discovered they shared a common interest in the music from the Middle and Near East. Rembrandt Frerichs lived and worked in Cai-ro. Tony Overwater has played with many musicians from the region and frequently visited the Levant ever since. Through his studies of the Persian tombak, Vinsent Planjer discovered the warmth and im-provisational expressiveness of Persian music. They found a fourth collaborator in Yoram Lachish. Born and raised in Israel, he easily ab-sorbed the fusion of Eastern and Western culture so prevalent in Is-raeli life and culture. A classically trained oboist, he later became one of the world’s few successful jazz interpreters on this instrument. Should Levantasy’s music have the power to break down walls, its mission would be accomplished.

F ireworks went off when Oene van Geel, Mark Tuinstra and Niti Ranjan Biswas played together for the first time. They then decided to start writing songs together based on traditional

ragas, funk and chamber music. The results gave them plenty of space to improvise and have allowed them to build up a rocking live reputation. From time to time they invite special guests from around the globe to come and play. In a review of their first album Tabla Rasa, critic Armand Serpenti wrote: “A very logically sounding mix of Indian and western improvisation, tough funk sounds and electronic effects, tongue in cheek country blues mixed with scat and contem-porary classical music with (Nordanian) soundscapes. This minimal line-up makes intelligent and challenging use of space in the music.” De Volkskrant: “A three-headed monster with the lightness of a bal-lerina. Guitarist Michiel Holland-ers also complements the overall tonal colour of concerts with a steel resonator guitar. Germany’s Blue Rhythm magazine wrote: “They go down the road less travelled, creatively mixing Balkan, Gypsy and Greek blues to invent a wonderful tradition of their own.” Major shows have included Holland’s International Gypsy Festival, La Nuit De Zigane in Paradiso Amsterdam, Crossing Border Festival, Into The Great Wide Open and the International Culture Fair in Freiberg, Germany.

C ello player Ernst Reijseger and vocalist Mola Sylla have been working together for quite some time, but ever since pianist Harmen Fraanje joined them in 2008 their sound has taken on

a new dimension. This unique line-up of musicians and instruments makes for a humorous and emotional outpouring of improvisational brilliance, coupled with awesome musical technique. The three of them have composed musical scores for film directors David Lynch and Werner Herzog, and performed at the World Press Photo awards ceremony. Their live repertoire consists of original songs in Sylla’s native language of Wolof, and beautiful compositions by Reijseger and Fraanje. Sylla adds the tonal colours of his traditional African instruments to his impassioned and mystical vocals. T he Royal Improvisers Orchestra (RIO) is an international free improvisation band based in Amsterdam. RIO is one of the foremost representatives of the new generation of improvisers

in the Netherlands. Its musicians have different types of expertise and stem from a diversity of cultures and various genres including baroque music, punk rock, jazz and electronics. But they all share a passion for improvisation. During four years of intensive rehearsing and performing the orchestra has developed its own language and now has a unique voice and way of making music. The musicians are free to communicate with each other without any preconceived ar-rangements. Everyone is equal, constantly communicating with each other and the audience. When a RIO gig begins, anything can hap-pen! Over the years RIO has collaborated with artists such as the London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO) and Instant Composer’s Pool (ICP) and in venues like the Bimhuis, Paard van Troje, LOOS and OT 301. Koleva, usually engaged in performing sophisticated contemporary classical music, and René van Barneveld, known for mixing rock and rap (as member of Urban Dance Squad, Holland’s most influential funk/rockgroup ever), but who never abandoned his lyrical options and bluesy backbone. Han Buhrs is a shouter who will try anything between emitting raw throaty sounds to language that can be sung. Each piece is a short film, a story in itself, built around lyrics and a rudimentary composition. Buhrs’ often non-narrative lyrics are sung in English, Dutch, French and self-made German. There’s a some-what dark feel to this music. At turns slow and delicate, it can float and then suddenly get nasty, loud and fast. Not exactly jazz, though it occasionally leans in that direction. File under ‘contemporary blues’. Rubatong recently released a ten track CD on the RED NOTE label.

S kip&Die started as a collaboration between the South African vocalist/visual artist Catarina Aimée Dahms (aka Cata.Pirata) and Dutch producer Jori Collignon (C-Mon & Kypski, Nobody

Beats The Drum). What was once a duo has now been transformed into a fully-fledged live band, including Gino Bombrini on percussion and Rene Kuhlmann on electronics. While travelling through South Africa’s Soweto, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Guguletu, Skip&Die collaborated with some of South Africa’s most inspiring up and com-ing music-makers. Not sticking to one genre, their music is a collage of sounds and personal travels from all over the globe: from Argen-tinian cumbia to Indian Bollywood, Sri Lankan baila tok, to kwaito and baile funk. Their debut album portrays their own experience of blaz-ing sun, dusty roads, township shacks, cockroaches, skulls, bones and lovebirds (in Spanish, Portuguese, English, African, Xhosa and Zulu), and is scheduled to be released in 2012 on Crammed Discs, Bruxelles.

S pinifex seeks the challenge of crossing stylistic borders. Non-western world music encounters western contemporary com-posed music and anarchic European free improv clashes with

tightly structured math metal. Its typical basic ingredients include forceful grooves, intense improvisation, virtuoso solos, psycho-rhythms and extreme dynamics in a continuous quest to push back and expand stylistic boundaries. This five piece band is an offshoot of the larger Spinifex Orchestra. The line-up features an explosive combination of musicians, all of whom have individually made names for themselves in Europe and abroad. Expect powerful grooves and free play, eccentric rhythms, intricate musical lines, and a torrid range of tempertures! “A great deal of thought has been given to composi-tions and arrangements, and solos are continuously accompanied by lovely phrases much more than simple riffs,” - de Volkskrant. “With a repertoire - colourful, full of contrast, inspired - Spinifex at times is reminiscent of the great Charles Mingus…” - NRC.

T estimoni is a two part suite. The first Testimoni Interiori features piano while the second Testimoni Exteriori features vibrando-neon. The introspective opening piece contrasts the second

which sings the praises of expression. Martin Fondse’s keyboard per-formances together with Eric Vloeimans’ trumpet and small ensemble, evoke a wonderfully colourful and sensual world. Fondse’s work con-tinually breaks new ground and combines several different styles. He composes for the Metropole Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orches-tra, Matthew Herbert, Basement Jaxx and fado chanteuse Mariza. Vloeimans’ warm and expressive style of trumpet playing has won him many fans both at home and abroad. He tours to great acclaim on international stages with his own projects Gatecrash and Kytecrash. The Matangi Quartet (founded in 1999) is a regular fixture on the chamber music calendar in and outside the Netherlands. Their im-passioned playing and fluent presentation have made them standard bearers of a new generation of classical musicians.

A Tin Men and the Telephone (TM&T) performance incorporates sounds, found in everyday life, into a show that combines the-atrical and visual aspects with music. They seize on things that

normally go unnoticed or appear to just be a nuisance: queues of service lines, directions from car navigation devices, ring-tones, screaming football reporters, the abrasive squelch of traffic noise, but also animal sounds - all prove useful to TM&T. Through the subtle and unobtrusive use of new techniques, music and ambient sound are interwoven so closely that dialogues appear and novel experi-ences emerge. This is for those who want to hear and see something new! Three enthusiastic musicians, who grew up with modern classi-cal music, contemporary jazz, hip-hop and Balkan rhythms, present jazz in a new guise. Seductive, funny, challenging, wicked, but al-ways with great musical depth and strong rhythms. TM&T is a musi-cal multimedia performance about the role modern communication tools play and how people lose themselves in it.

T hough definitely a jazzman, leading Dutch saxophonist Yuri Honing has spread his musical wings much farther afield. He has recorded with amongst others Dutch improviser Misha

Mengelberg and Lebanese singer Rima Khcheich, and performed with such artists as Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden, after first having made his own mark by recording an album of pop songs with his trio. The CD Star Tracks became an international hit. The Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet was formed in 2009. The term ‘acoustic’ should not be taken too literally: in this group, soundscapes and electronic sound effects are and will remain part of the total aural landscape. He will however be working with a piano player for the first time in nearly a decade. ECM recording artist Wolfert Brederode joins Hon-ing in the quartet’s quest to explore musical freedom, spiritualism and time. In 2012 Yuri Honing was awarded the prestigious VPRO/Boy Edgar Prijs for his entire oeuvre.

Z app 4 is a band with a string quartet line-up. It combines groove, improvisation and fantasy with passionate solos. On stage the group is a blast: they interact at high speed and have

a huge musical range. There is always a poetic side to their music no matter how wild or gentle their playing gets. All four members contribute compositions to the band’s repertoire. Their unique sound and repertoire makes Zapp 4 accessible to a large audience that includes a wide variety of music lovers. Besides the traditional way of playing violins they are also strummed like rhythm guitars, and the cello plays grooving bass lines. Zapp 4 sound better than ever; the zapping from genre to genre, where their name originates from, flows in an organic blend of jazz, classical music, folk, pop and funk.

AT present: The Dutch Jazz & World Meeting (DJWM) is produced by Music Center the Netherlands, a govern-ment funded agency for the support and promotion of

Dutch professional music. MCN also implements the MusicXport.nl programme, that offers ‘tailor-made’ advice and support to some 20 Dutch jazz and world music groups (along with pop/rock/dance acts and classical ensembles). Artists are given the opportunity of pre-senting themselves at leading international showcase events where they are also collectively promoted. Moreover, music professionals working with these groups are given thorough crash courses in inter-national management. During this DJWM you will have ample oppor-tunity to meet with Dutch groups who are a part of the MusicXport.nl programme. See page 93 with a list of those selected as 2012 Mu-sicXport artists. Rest assured you will be dealing with groups that have first class international potential.

IN future: As a result of massive budget cuts by the Dutch government, MCN will cease to exist at the end of 2012. Nevertheless we are hard at work to ensure the continua-

tion of the collective international promotional programmes, including Dutch attendance at international conventions and showcase festi-vals, future editions of DJWM and the so successful MusicXport.nl programme. In all probability this will take place with much the same team but under the different wings of the - Bureau Promotie Podium-kunsten (Bureau for the Promotion of Performing Arts) – an independ-ent non-government subsidized body. We will of course keep you posted and let you know our contact details, what our plans are for 2013 and where and how we will be able to meet at future editions of the Dutch Jazz & World Meeting!

Come what may, Dutch jazz and world music will continue to increase its presence on the international scene, thanks to its quality and unique character, but also – come hell or high water – because of our passionate desire to carry on doing what we believe in most, that is: the promotion and support of this fantastic Dutch music.

A new musical adventureIf you are looking for what DJWM stands for in

a nutshell, you needn’t look any further. This duo - singer Monica Akihary and guitarist Niels Brou-wer - seamlessly blend jazz and world. And with such a beautiful voice as Monica’s, it sounds so natural. Their latest album fea-tures covers from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, David Crosby, Bob Marley, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. The main theme is a desire for freedom, further un-derscored by the improvised pieces on the album.
