Welcome
I want to give you a great welcome to the Medical technology program. Medical Technologists profession is of utmost importance due to the fact that up to 70% of medical decisions are based upon lab results. Also, medical technologists can work on hospital laboratories, private labs, blood banks, pharmaceutical industries and university teaching. In this program you will learn to make and interpret results from blood tests, work with blood products, identification of bacteria and other microorganisms that produce infections, identify possible hematologic conditions, detection of chemical blood levels and analysis of other body fluids to see how the body is working and if there is an anomaly to tell the physician. Within the program you will work on external clinics to put on practice the knowledge acquired during the program. Our facilities and academic personnel will help you make this academic year a success. We all want you to be a smooth and successful year. All we want for you is to lean and prosper in order to become a successful, excellent professional medical technologist. This manual will provide you with information about your studies during your year of medical technology. This student manual provides information about the politics of the Science in Medical Technology
program. The manual does not substitute the students manual from Ana G Mendez University. It serves
as an additional guide about specific information of the Medical Technology program.
Program Description
The Bachelor of Science with specialization in Medical Technologist as well as the post certificate in
medical technology is designed to provide students with knowledge of liberal arts as well as specialized
courses in science. The principal objective of the program is to prepare medical technologist with
technical abilities knowledge of the area, and critical thinking that are needed for a high performance in
their careers. As well as to educate the professionals and the ethics of an ever changing world.
The institution has to forms to recruit students for the certificate program: Either the students is
admitted to the institution and the Certificate its given during the Fourth year, or the student that is
from Ana G Mendez University or other University has completed its Bachelor in Science and is
admitted to the Certificate Program.
The plan of studies is developed so students will have knowledge and communicative abilities needed
for practical work, supervision and educational in a clinical scenario or research. Students admitted to
the BS in medical technology will register in basic courses on Biology, Chemistry Mathematics and
general courses needed for a bachelor’s degree. After completing 109 credits and after being three years
at the university, the students have to apply to the professional area of Medical Technology. The
completion of this phase does not guarantee the admission to the professional phase. Other students
who have a BS in natural science and have the requirements for the professional stage also can apply to
the program.
Bachelor of Sciences in Medical Technology and /or Post Bachelor Certificate in Medical
Technology Sciences (Professional Certificate)
The professional phase of the program includes advanced courses in the natural sciences as well as
basic and advanced courses in clinical laboratory. The program consists of a total of 155 credits that
should be taken in 8 semesters that also include summer courses. The studies plan is divided between
43 credits of general Studies course, 40 of science and math courses, 26 credits in courses of Biology
and Chemistry and 45 in the area of professional development. The studies plan offers students to
develop cognitive abilities communicative and ethic abilities to be able to perform the profession.
The Post bachelor certificate in Medical Technology has a tenth month duration and consists of a total
of 45 credits. These are divided between 26 credits in theory and a practicum of 19 credits

Mission
The mission of the program of Sciences in Medical Technology at the Ana G Mendez University
Gurabo Campus, is to prepare the student with a complete academic formation where practice and
theory come together in technological advances, new methodologies of the clinical laboratory, research
and development of a capable personnel that contributes to the health area in the diagnosis, prevention
and treatment of existing illness on the community that it attends.
Goals
1. Graduate professionals of excellence at the bachelor level in Medical Technology and the post
bachelor Certificate in Medical Technology.
2. To prepare professionals with the abilities to interpret, evaluate and correlate the obtained data in
clinical laboratories.
3. Develop professionals able to make decisions, problem solving abilities, and essential administrative
and educational abilities.
4. Contribute to the continuous developments of a competent faculty in clinical laboratory and
professional growth.
5. Promote the highest standards of performance and professional ethics as they relate to patients
laboratory work and interdisciplinary health professionals.
6. Prepare the graduates to be able to pass the certificate examinations in Puerto Rico and the
United States to work as a licensed professional.
The graduates of the Ana G Méndez Gurabo Campus Medical Technology Program in bachelor
or post bachelor Certificate Degree Program will be able to:
1. Analyze clinical laboratory tests in all areas, taking into account the pre-analytical,
analytical and post analytical phases
2. Develop communication with other health professionals related to the clinical laboratory
3. Apply principles and practices in the area of administration and supervision of clinical
laboratories
4. It will train other professionals in the methodologies and terminology of clinical laboratory
services
5. It will apply government and safety regulations and standards applied to clinical laboratory
science.
6. Carry out principles and practices of clinical study design, implementation and
dissemination of results.
7. Integrate the principles and practices of professional conduct and the importance of continuous
professional development.
8. It will make decisions regarding quality control results and quality assurance measures by
performing the appropriate procedures to maintain the accuracy and precision of the results.
9. Apply the principles of current information and communication systems in clinical laboratories.
10. It will develop solutions to the data obtained in the laboratory.
11. Apply the principles of current information and communication systems in clinical laboratories.
12. Apply the skills acquired to perform professionally in a safe manner for the welfare of patients.

13. It will be able to apply, analyze, deduce and evaluate procedures aimed at the diagnosis,
promotion, prevention and treatment of pathologies that affect man and his environment,
complying with bio-safety standards.
14. It will carry out daily exams or procedures of high complexity according to the technological
progress of each of its specialties in order to contribute to the clinical diagnosis.
15. Present research skills to use in the progress of the profession.
Admission Requirements
The student that applies to the Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Technology and/or the last
year in the BSMT from Ana G Mendez University-- Gurabo Campus should be able to fulfill the

1. Completed three years of curricular sequence for the BSMT or a bachelor in Science from an
accredited university with the required courses for a Certificate in Medical Technology. Science
courses should been passed with no less that C and to maintain a GPA of 2.75 or more during the
Bachelors.
Student has taken the following courses: General Biology (two semesters); Human Biology (two
semesters) or one course of Anatomy and Human Physiology , Microbiology, Cellular and Molecular
Biology, Immunology, Basic Genetics( one semester) , Calculus (one semester), General Physics (two
semesters), Organic Chemistry (two semesters), and Analytical Chemistry.
No courses of Medical Technology from other institutions will be accepted.
Important information for the students that apply for the Professional Certificate in Medical

1. The student must complete the application and present the official certificates.
2. The Completion of all the requisites does not guarantee admission to the program.
3. The Certificate Post Bachelor in Medical Technology Program only accepts twenty students per
semester (August – January).
4. The Medical Technology Program consists of eight semesters and three summers long and gives the
BSTM degree. The studies plan includes general education courses, science and basic math courses and
diverse laboratory courses.
5. The professional phase of the Medical Technology Program includes advance courses in natural
science and basic and advanced clinical laboratory courses. The students will complete all required
courses on campus and then finished the program with a clinical experience at one of the affiliate
clinics that are certified by the Ana G Mendez Gurabo campus.
6. Once the student has made the admission this will be subject to an evaluation by the SST. The
following points will be taken seriously for admission to the Professional part of their program:
1. Minimum cumulative GPA 2.75 (25%)
2. Science requisite courses for admission to the program minimum GPA 2.75 (35%)
3. Oral interview and professional essay to be don during the evaluation process. (25%)
4. Three letters of recommendation from Science and Math Professors (15%)

3. The students will be accepted based upon their results during the evaluation process. Letter will
be sent to each interviewed person admitting or not to the program.
4. The admitted student will present the following documents before beginning the practice
phase: 1. Health Certificate
2. Vaccination certificate against hepatitis B. and chickenpox.
3. Negative Penal Records
4. Medical plan
5. for some practicum centers a drug test might be required
7.Students should follow the proposed curricular sequence.
Policy in case the program does not obtain certification from NAACLS:
the Medical technology Program is on an evaluation an accreditation process for the accrediting agency
NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences). This certification lets
students to take the United States certification exam. If the student finishes and the agency does not
approve the Certification, the students can only take the Puerto Rico certification exam, based on law
that regulates the Medical Technology profession in Puerto Rico.
Specific Program Objectives
The program graduate must have the competencies stipulated from the (National Accrediting Agency
for Clinical Laboratory Sciences-NAACLS).
Cognitive Objectives
1. Demonstrate ability to document obtained laboratory data and create statistics to help in the
development of the investigation.
2. Analyze scientific data and reach conclusions to make precise decisions
3. Identify proper laboratory problems and could propose plan and execute solution strategies
using previous knowledge.
4. Have knowledge of science and medical Technology.
5. Knowledge and use of emergent technologies in electronic communication.
Psycho-motor Objectives
1. Maintain precaution with optimal security in terms of physical and chemical risks and proper
cleanup of pathogens agents.
2. Makes specific calculations for laboratory procedures.
3. Develops the skills for the selection of adequate samples for a given procedure.
4. Acquire basic skills for clinical laboratory work.

5. Implement execute and evaluate bio-security norms to prevent, avoid and eliminate and
minimize proper risks for the execution of examinations and clinical procedures with the end
goal to protect the people and the environment.

Lecture
Hours:
The students are assigned to receive clinical education for eight hours. Programmed Real hours will
vary depending upon the site of clinical rotation. The conventional time for teaching clinical science is
from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, although other hours, depending on the clinical rotation site can be included.
Each rotation site will give students 30 minutes for lunch. It will be expected for students to be on time
and in the assigned area. The students should be given instruction prior to leaving the work area.

Attendance
Attendance is compulsory to the classroom and to the laboratory in order to pass courses. Excessive
abscesses will be referred to the Quality of life.
Appropriate attire
Appropriate attire is required for the classroom-laboratory fulfilling the requirements of the institution.
The student at all moments should use closed toe shoes in the classroom.
Use of cell phones
Use of cell phones is prohibited during class and laboratory hours. Are only to be used in cases where
the professor indicates.
Academic Evaluation
Courses will be evaluated between tests and projects that will be discussed and informed by the
syllabus of each course. Upon miss an exam, the students should bring a justifiable excuse and the
professor will determine how to offer a makeup.
Clinical practice exams makeups
The student who takes the clinical practice exams and does not pass with a minimum grade of 70%;
could take a makeup exam a week after been received the grade. This is for the purpose so that the
students can study and comprehend the theoretic phase of the clinical practice. Also, this could serve as
a preparation for the comprehensive exam that comes after finishing the practice. The students will
only repeat this exam twice. If the student understands that he does not need a makeup exam, he/she
should notify and fill a document indicating to not makeup the exam.
Evaluation Scale
The final grade is based upon partial exams, laboratory work, assigned work and a final exam. The
percentage for each of this item will depend on each particular course.

The student will approve all courses with no less that a C in order to continue in the academic program.
In case of failure in two courses the student should abandon the program due to academic deficiency
and cannot reapply for admission.

Bad behavior acts that are subject to sanction include without limitation: plagiarism, to deceive,
failure, or negative to follow the norms of clinical practice, falsification or data fabrication either
scientific or academic, o representation of the manufactured data that bias the result of scientific
experimentation or incite hide or to try such an act. Plagiarism is defined as without limitation the act
of another representation as being for yours. Moreover plagiarism consists on copy, paraphrase, or use
the written oral or digital work of others without their consent or crediting the source, instead make it
his/her own.
Another part of plagiarism includes the use of electronic information without its adequate sources.
In the case of bad academic behavior the student will be subject to a series of sanctions including
failure on the course and or a plagiarized assignment.
Special Needs Students
Students with any special need or situation or that are receiving Vocational Services should inform
professors immediately in order to receive a special adaptations in the classroom and /or the laboratory.
The student may refer his/her situation to the Quality of Life and Wellness Office or call 787-743-7979
extensions 4202 or 4210.
Clinical Practice
The student will be oriented before the start of his/her clinical practice and should complete its
objectives. The student will follow the Professional Practice Manual. The Clinical Practice Supervisor
can suspend any student that does not comply with the established accords that includes inadequate
clinical and professional conduct.
Work Experience
Any lab working paid hours cannot be considered towards courses or clinical practice. The student
cannot replace any employee.
Service Work
The student can volunteer outside the regular hours of clinical practice, it cannot be compulsory for the
student .
Policies and Procedures
1) Advising & guiding students through the program
Students of the Medical Technology program can receive advice on the available schedules provided by
the teachers and the program director. In this type of advice the student can be oriented on the
performance of their courses or any doubt about the program. If the student reports that he has other
problems that are affecting him in his academic performance, he is referred to the Office of quality of
life where he can be assisted by counselors. The action is documented through a referral found on the
website of the institution known as EARS (Interventions). All management is worked with strict
confidentiality.

2) Clinical assignment
The Medical Technology program guarantees that the student has the opportunity to carry out their
clinical practice in hospitals and laboratories in the different areas of the country. If the practice center
assigned to the student for any reason indicates that they cannot receive the student, the program will
look for another clinical practice assignment. The student must have transportation to perform the
clinical practice and it is not guaranteed that it is close to home.
3) Student grievance & appeals
Students who have a complaint or appeal due to situation with teachers or the administration and
understand that their rights have been violated or need to claim any information relevant to academic
processes should visit the program director's office. If you have problems with any of the courses
presented, you should talk directly with the professor if you cannot resolve the situation, you must file
a complaint with the program director. If an agreement cannot be reached with the student, he or she
will be referred to the Office of Quality of Life.
4) Criteria for program completion including probation, suspension, and dismissal
Academic progress
The student must maintain academic progress during their class program, the minimum approval in all
courses is 70%. All students will be kept informed about their academic progress and will also be able
to see their grades in the area of https://gurabo.uagm.edu/es/asuntos-estudiantiles/servicios-
electronicos. Student can only fail in 1 course, he will be offered a comprehensive exam. Failure to
approve it must leave the program due to academic deficiency. You can apply next semester but space
is not guaranteed. You have only two semesters to request readmission to the program.
Assistance
Attendance is mandatory, work done in class and the student is not present will be awarded a zero in
his grade and there are no refills. This will affect your average and class performance. Unexcused
absences are referred through the EARS system.
Conduct
The student must comply at all times with the rules, policies and procedures of the student handbook of
the program in addition to the student handbook of the institution. Students who do not comply with
the required conduct during the study period in the institution and in the practice centers will be
dismissed from the program for violating the rules, policies and procedures of the institution. He will
not have the right to request readmission in the program.

Suspension Cases in the Practice Center
The student who for any reason the practice center suspends for excessive absences, consistently fails
to complete assignments, disruptive behavior, or exhibits conduct detrimental to the ethics of the
Medical Technology profession, inappropriate behavior, or any reason they express will be
immediately referred to the program Director.

Rules to be followed by students in the Program
1. The student must read and apply the rules of the program as well as the institution found in the
catalog of the institution, student manual and program manual that is sent via email.

2. Program courses are offered Monday through Friday during the day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. If an
unforeseen event arises and the courses cannot be met, arrangements are made so that the hours are
covered at night and / or Saturdays.
3. The courses are offered by weeks according to the amount of credits the course has. Example a 3
credit course will meet three weeks.
4. All groups that are admitted in August and January are guided before starting classes. The itinerary
and the rules to be followed in the program are explained.
5. The student will have laboratory experiences where they will be exposed to samples of corporeal
fluids so they must have Hepatitis B vaccines (3 doses) before beginning the academic year.
6. Students will be evaluated through exams, short tests, case studies, laboratory reports, oral reports,
among others. Each course has a description of components to evaluate and is discussed at the
beginning of each class as well as the course guide.
7. The student can only fail in one course and take a comprehensive exam at the end of the theoretical
phase. You will not be able to continue for the practical phase and you will only have 2 semesters to be
able to repeat it. This as long as there is the quota for admission.
8. The student who fails to repeat the course may not request readmission and must leave the program
due to academic deficiency.

9. If a situation arises for the sick student and has not been able to complete a course, an incomplete
will be granted as long as he has satisfactorily completed previous work. The student must request the
incomplete and not take the replacement exams will be awarded a grade of F.
10. The student will be responsible for using protective equipment in all laboratory experiences that
require it. You must follow the safety rules in the laboratory, if you do not comply with the regulations,
you must leave the laboratory and you cannot repeat the assigned work of the day.
11. At the end of the theoretical course phase, the student will take a practical understanding so that the
student can review the basic knowledge for the beginning of his practice.
12. The student must attend an orientation prior to the beginning of their clinical practice, this is 5% of
the clinical practice mark.
13. The practice centers are given according to their availability, it is not guaranteed that the students
will be in practice centers near their home and in the same way in some cases to complete their
rotations they will have to be available to be located in other centers.
14. The student must not wear a cap in the area of clinical practice, only if it is a religion-related attire
will he be accepted.
15. The student who has body piercing or tattoos should keep them covered in the area of clinical
practice.
16. The use of acrylic nails, large garments is prohibited, in addition the hair in women and men must
be combed and collected.
17. At the end of each rotation the student must take a comprehensive final exam that is offered every
Friday from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. On that day the student must bring the evaluations of the rotation and
the workbook. The student will not be awarded a note until they submit their documents.
18. The student can only fail in comprehensive exams of two courses, they must be taken no later than
two weeks after making the first attempt.
19. At the end of the clinical practice the student must appear at the University to take the MTEC 416
course which will be one week. This class consists of reviews and the conduct of an investigation
which was worked during the practical phase.
20. All students must have a medical plan and will be required to begin their clinical practice in the area
where they rotate.
21. Before the clinical practice phase, every student must present evidence of having a Hepatitis B
vaccine (three doses), Chickenpox, doping test and any other document required to start the hospital.
22. The student must not use cell phones and follow the rules of each hospital.
23. The student will be in his clinical practice at all times under the supervision of a medical

technologist who will be offering the teaching and practice of rotation through practice with laboratory
equipment, quality control, unknown tests and evaluations.
Program Completion
The student upon completing his baccalaureate program or post-baccalaureate certificate in Medical
Technology and fulfilling the graduation processes will be eligible to request a board exam of Puerto
Rico which is administered by the Board of Medical Technologists of Puerto Rico, involved to the
Office of regulations of health professionals. The responsibility of the University and the program is to
grant the baccalaureate degree or post-baccalaureate certificate in Medical Technology. The granting of
the certificate title does not require proof of certification or licensing of the profession.
Essential requirements of the profession
Skills and essential techniques that a Medical Technology student should possess
The students that apply for the Medical Technology Certificate, should have and demonstrate good
visual and manual coordination, finger skills, visual acuity, emotional and physical health for
admission. Entry into the program is without discrimination due to sex, race belief age handicap or
national origin.
Due to the inherent demands of the profession it is expected that certain minimal physical abilities can
be performed.
The essential functions are the nonacademic standards for the student should be able to dominate in
order to participate with success in the Bachelors program and or the Certificate in Medical Technology
and be ready for the business world. If the student is not sure to be able to comply with the essential
abilities it should consult with the Directors Program for more information.
Visual and observational ability for students of Medical Technology Science
The Medical Technology student should be capable of:
• Observe laboratory demonstrations where corporal fluids culture materials skin secretions and
cell samples are proven. .
• Characterize the odor clarity and viscosity of biologic samples reactive or chemical reaction
products.
• Use a binocular microscope and distinguish the structure color of microscopic samples.
• Read and comprehend texts numbers and graphs.
• Recognize the alarms
Motor and mobile ability require for students of Medical Technology Science.
• The Medical Technology student should be capable of:
• Perform laboratory tests that are in accordance to safe existing laboratory standards.
• Perform continuous moderate physical work that requires to be seated or standing for long
periods of time.

• Drive to the assigned clinical practice places.
• Move around areas where there are hospital patients or patients ready to be served.
• Hold maintain and transport samples reactive dangerous chemical materials on a secure manner

The students/ persons with auto immune problems) for example (immune compromised, allergic) could
put in risk their health when working in the clinical laboratory due to infectious diseases (biologic or
chemical) that are on all laboratory areas.
