Introduction

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is changing howbuildings, infrastructure, and utilities are planned, designed, built, and managed. BIM solutions help turninformation into insight and deliver business value atevery step in the process.

Introduction• What is BIM?A multi dimensional tool, Building Information Modeling(BIM) involves generating a visual model of the buildingwhich also manages data about it, at the design stage, throughout the construction phase and during its workinglife. Typically BIM uses real time, dynamic buildingmodeling software working in 3D, 4D and 5D to increaseproductivity and efficiency, save costs in the design andconstruction stages, and to reduce running costs, afterconstruction.3D= Modeling4D= Modeling + Scheduling5D= Modeling + Scheduling + Cost planning

Understanding BIMTo understand BIM you need to know & analyze the deference between drafting output system (Traditional workflow) as in AutoCAD software, and project output Building information modeling systems as in Revit software.

BIM is not software, BIM is a process

How you start a BIM team

BIM groups that perform collisiondetection, coordination, phasemodeling, and the like on differentprojects, and act separate from theengineering or CAD group. Some integrate the three facets intoone group, using the engineeringgroups CAD detailers as BIM detailers, and have the engineersknowledgeable about AutoCAD®software perform these functionswhile they design systems.

How you start a BIM team

Personnel:You should always believe that your group is only asgood as the people in it.BIM Leads:Your group will need BIM Leads to manage the differentteams that are working on site or from home base ondifferent projects, or to manage a sub group that stillfalls under the BIM group jurisdiction.

Page 11: BIM Technology Knowledge & Implementation

How you start a BIM teamBIM Manager:Your group will most always have a BIM Manager whooversees the entire group. Sometimes in largercorporations that focus heavily on BIM and see the truevalue of it, there will be a Director of BIM Services. Thisperson will oversee multiple BIM groups within theorganizations multiple offices from a central locationand constantly keep tabs on projects and meetings withthe different BIM Managers.BIM Managers must have even more experience withBIM projects and BIM related costs and managementthan the BIM Leads.

How you start a BIM team

BIM Detailer:Not to be confused with a CAD Detailer, BIM detailershave experience working on BIM projects, and utilizethe 3D software that traditional CAD detailers wouldnot use such as AutoCAD® MEP, Autodesk® Revit® MEP,Autodesk® Navisworks, and others. BIM Detailers arewhat make your BIM projects run proficiently(hopefully), and should be considered the oil to yourBIM machine.

How you start a BIM team

Technology:The BIM Manager or BIM Director will get requestsfrequently from the BIM group. This includes requestsfor hardware upgrades such as faster machines, largermonitors, spaceballs, unicorn mouse pads, and the like. This also includes software requests such as add ons forAutoCAD or Revit, more licenses for a specific programbecause of the influx of requests or new hires, or even arequest to change the program you are currently usingor adding a primary.

Page 14: BIM Technology Knowledge & Implementation

How you start a BIM teamFor example, adding Revit to your vast array of BIMdetailing experience and test driving it on a few platformsto be ready for a change in procedure initiated by the client. These are the types of decisions that the BIM Managermust be equipped to handle. If BIM Managers dont havean extensive background in BIM, they would not have theknowledge to be able to take the cost of the technologyrequest, the usefulness of the item, the effect it would haveon the team, and many other factors into considerationbefore making the ultimate decision to submit an order toIT or to their manager for approval. They have to believethat these purchases are valid and would benefit not onlythe group, but the company as a whole.

BIM ImplementationBefore using BIM technology, you need to ask yourselfsome questions as follow:What are the process were needed to be used by BIM(Design, Visualization, Simulate, Document, Operateor/And Build)? What is the scope definition (Modeling, MEPcoordination, MEP shop drawings, BOQ, Testing &commissioning, etc.)?How can I use BIM in the project tender & constructionphases?

BIM ImplementationBIM Implementation action:After we defined the scope of BIM, we need a plan forstarting (BIM roadmap).Expert:
