The Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston is proud to present our first Pediatric Emergency Medicine CME course. The curriculum will focus on state of the art, evidence-based practice presented by faculty from our division who have published widely on their topic area. The course is structured, through small specialized workshops, round table lunch sessions, and panel discussions ac-companying each plenary session, to maximize individual contact with faculty and to individualize the learning experience to fit the needs of regional, national, and international participants. Specialized tracks for clinicians, clinical educators, and researchers will reflect both the academic and clinical aspects of pediatric emergency medicine.

Fall is a beautiful time of the year in Boston and New England. The city and the region offer many cul-tural, historical and recreational activities.

PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE STATE OF THE ART

DescriptionThis course in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, presented by the faculty of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston, is intended for emergency physicians, pediatric emergency physicians, and acute care pediatricians. The course will focus on state of the art, evidence-based practice presented by faculty who have written national guidelines and published widely on their topic. Emphasis on small group interactions will maximize faculty contact, while specialized workshops for clinicians, researchers, and educa-tors, will reflect both the academic and clinical aspects of pediatric emergency medicine.

The field of pediatric emergency medicine continues to expand and become more specialized. This course is for clinicians practicing acute care pediatrics to maintain and expand their knowledge base and to keep up with advances in the field. The Division of Emer-gency Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston has the largest pediatric emergency medicine faculty in the country, who are nationally recognized as leaders in the various subject areas of pediatric emergency medicine.

Learning ObjectivesAt the end of this course you will be able to:• Explain the recent evidence supporting current diagnostic protocols for febrile infants• Review the current management of pediatric sepsis focusing on early goal directed therapy, strategies to improve outcomes, the use

of rapid response teams, and ED quality metrics for sepsis• Perform high fidelity simulations to reinforce pediatric advanced life support algorithms, ultrasound guided vascular access, and

video laryngoscopy for advanced airway management • Explain the management of head trauma in the acutely injured athlete • Review the current controversies in managing pediatric brain injury and describe new therapies• Describe evidence-based best practice for the use of computed tomography in trauma

Procedural Sedation and Analgesia: Fundamentals and Advanced TrainingFacilitator: Baruch Krauss, MD, EdM;Eric Fleegler, MD, MPH, Mark Waltzman, MD This workshop explores all aspects of procedural sedation in settings outside the operating room from basic to advanced concepts including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to managing acute anxiety and pain in children to the logis-tics of developing a sedation service.

Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access (Max enrollment 20 per day)Facilitator: Jason Levy, MD, RDMSRebecca Vieira, MD; Rachel Gallagher, MD This session is designed to provide an introduction to ultrasound-assisted vascular access. Both ultrasound-assisted central and peripheral access will be taught with a focus on machine fundamentals, anatomy, image acquisition, and the use of ultrasound to guide catheter placement. The session will include a short didactic followed by hands-on practical instruction using ultrasound simulation models.

Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance in PEM (Max enrollment 20 per day)Facilitator: Anne Stack, MDRaina Paul, MD; Elliot Melendez, MD; Cathy Perron, MD This workshop will provide an overview of the current state of quality in pediatric emergency medicine. Through small breakout sessions, each participant will learn a practical approach to development of performance measures and performance analysis, and have the opportunity to develop his/her own quality improvement plan.

Case Studies in PEM Facilitator: Marc Baskin, MDAndrew Capraro, MD; Bruce Horwitz, MD, PhD; Lois Lee, MD, MPH; Rebekah Mannix, MD, MPH No one likes presenting cases and “taking the heat” at M&M, but there are lessons to be learned. Many chief complaints have benign causes. However, the “can’t miss” diagnoses must be considered. We will review a series of cases exemplifying these scenarios.

Simulation and Practical Skills Workshop (Max enrollment 30 per day)Facilitator: Josh Nagler, MDRichard Bachur, MD; Vincent Chiang, MD; Nathan Mick, MD; Mark Neuman, MD, MPH This workshop will include demonstrations, simulated scenarios, and hands on instruction in: 1) pediatric airway management focusing on video laryngoscopy, 2) an evidence-based approach to pediatric rapid sequence intubation, 3) emergent access including manual and power-assisted intraosseous cannulation techniques and central venous catheters, and 4) invasive thoracic procedures including needle thoracostomy and chest tube placement.

Lunch Break DiscussionEvidence Based Guideline ReviewFaculty to review our Division of Emergency Medicine’s newly-developed evidence-based guidelines for common PEM conditions. Management pathways and quality care metrics for each condition will be emphasized.
