I hope you had a fantastic Winter Break and are ready to serve again. I know that I am! We have done a fantastic job in the past month, serving over 2000 hours for our communities, and I want us to keep this up in the New Year. There are plenty of ways you can do this by and you do not have to just wait for officers to find events. Find your own events and talk to your club about co-ordinating the event! There are so many ways to get involved within Key Club even if you are not an officer.
Speaking about officers, it is nearly time to elect the next Lieutenant Gover-nor of Division 41 South. An “LTG” is the liaison between our division and our district of Key Club. There are many things an LTG does, like train officers, plan fundraisers, host DCMs, and keep tabs on all clubs. Come out to the election, which is called conclave, on February 4th at El Toro High School. This is a fan-tastic opportunity for many of you to learn a little more about how Key Club works, take part in choosing your future, and make new friends from schools in our division.
In addition to conclave, District Convention is also quickly approaching! This is a convention in which all Key Clubs in California, Nevada, and Hawaii come to celebrate a year of great service. We train new officers, celebrate a fantas-tic year, and then elect the new district board. From experience, I can tell you this is an incredible learning experience. There are various workshops to help train officers and members alike, a Keynote Speaker, and a dance!
If you have any questions about Conclave, District Convention, finding service events, or anything about Key Club, feel free to ask me. I am here to serve all of you, to help make your Key Club experience even better. Come out to our January DCM and ROAR like a LION!

Volunteer Events
Peking Acrobat Show

Every year, the city of Pasadena holds the Rose Parade, where each float is created using only organic materials and formed with the help of volunteers. This year, I was lucky enough to be able to work on the floats with my high school key club. Although the shifts were long and somewhat tiring, the experience was amazing. They had us cut flowers and blend them to form powders and pastes. I guess that doesn’t sound very glamorous, but they kept us entertained and allowed us to walk around
often and tour the vicinity to see numerous beautiful floats. A few lucky volunteers were chosen to work on the floats, but most of them were experienced and had done it before. It’s incredible how detailed they were, and i am so fortunate to have been a part of the Rose Parade. The experience was one to remember, and seeing the floats I worked on in the actual parade was rewarding and exciting. I can’t wait to volunteer again next year.

It’s a “Key” Experience Hello Key Clubbers! This is Amy Lee from Division 41 South. Do you have a strong passion for Key Club like I do? Although the main reason why I joined Key Club was because of my brother’s participation in it, I feel like Key Club really is the club for me. I always wanted to donate my time to do community service but never really found the chance to do it. When I heard about Key Club and its dedication to
community service, I said “Yep, I’m in.” Also, going to events like DCON or Beach Boomba with friends is just really fun. I definitely wanted to become more than just a normal member of this awesome club and became Freshmen Rep of 2011-2012. I am looking forward to a great high school career with Key Club and I hope you guys are too!

Rose FloatsThe morning of Rose Float was a slow morning. I definitely wasn’t used to waking at 5:00AM to head to El Toro to catch a bus. Once I got to school, many of the Key Clubbers were already there and before I knew it we arrived in Pasadena to decorate the floats and do the jobs they assigned us. My friends and I were assigned a flower cutting job which took up the entire time, but it was really fun because
we were all having fun conversations to pass the time. For lunch we had chili hotdogs which were pretty good and after we had lunch, we headed back to our station. We had already cut most of the flowers up so we were assigned a different flower job which took us until the end of our shift! Rose Float was a really fun experience by spending nearly half the day working and spending time with your friends.

MISSION VIEJO
PreparationsThis month Mission Viejo High School has been preparing for our second semester club rush. We plan on having a banner and balloons out to attract more people our way. We also participated in the Rose Float decorating last month, having a total of 22 members. This month we also had the opportunity to attend another Kiwanis meeting at Denny’s to receive our check for helping with See’s Candy. We managed to make $400 overall and all our members were excited and said they would love to do it again next year. We plan on helping out the Habitat Restoration on the 22nd
from 9AM to 12PM. There we will be helping remove weeds and plant seeds. We have been discussing a car wash or bake sale in the near future so we hope to have one at the end of this month next month. We are already trying to get people interested in helping out at the “Up in The Air” event on March 2nd. We’ll be helping set up everything, traffic control and tear it all down. We also plan to start informing and get all members interested in running for an officer position because, our elections will be taking place at the end of February.

Rose Float Decorating

As our last big event of 2011, Tesoro Key Club participated in Rose Float Decorating for the first time. Getting up at 4:30 AM, thirty-six key clubbers were pumped and ready to go to the early shift-many with Starbucks in hand. After a long journey up to Pasadena, California, Tesoro Key Club embarked on a long day of cutting. Much to many members’ surprise, the flowers used on the Rose Floats are not actually whole. First all petals are cute off of the flowers stem. After that, petals are moved to another station where they are further cut up. Finally, the petal pieces are put in a blender and afterwards
ready to be put onto the Rose Floats. Though many of our members spent the day cutting away at flowers they later wished they would never see again, some lucky members(who were not afraid of heights) got to get up on the scaffolds and paint the actual rose floats. Member Naseem Fazelli was chosen to work on the X-BOX 360 float! After a long and exciting eight hours of decorating, members were excited to go home and catch up on some lost sleep. New Year’s resolution: to participate in the late shift next year!
SoCal Half Marathon and 5KAfter having to resist the snooze button all throughout the first week of the new 2012 school year, Tesoro’s Key Clubbers rose to the challenge by volunteering with the Southern California Half Marathon and 5K, hosted in Irvine, California from 7:15 – 11:30 AM. Manning the sixth mile stretch of the 13.1 route, Tesoro’s Key Club banded together with Garden Grove’s Key Club in marking the course and cheering on the participant runners. Junior Danielle Tan commented saying, “It was a real fun to direct traffic and cheer on the runners. And it wasn’t even that early, [un]like when we had to get up at 4:30AM for the Rose
Float Decorating!!” Junior Sierra Feasel also commented, “It was kind of scary when I first arrived as many major roads were blocked and closed, but once I got to the meeting point it was nice eating a snack before cheering for the runners. It’s a real fun event, especially when the runners cheer with you.”All in all, this event was a success as we were able to efficiently direct the course for the runners and keep their spirits up. During the year, don’t be surprised to find Tesoro’s Key Club volunteering on the sideline of another marathon cheering YOU on as you race on by!

When first joining key club, I had no idea the opportunities that would be presented to me. After first hearing about volunteering for the Rose Parade, I was determined to sign up for the event before all the spaces were filled. To my immediate relief there was one slot left open for me. Up to the day I was absolutely thrilled with the prospect of helping decorate the floats. I had no idea the amount of work that went into every single float, all of those countless hours spent building. Our group was assigned to Western Asset’s float and our first task was to butcher Christmas trees. In the beginning, I was excited by the idea of it, but after a couple of hours, I truly appreciated all the work that goes into these floats. Immediately after we were done clipping off the branches of Christmas
trees, we were set to the task of pinning the small branches to the float. The branches were to serve as a grass base for the float. This was my favorite as well as the most tiring aspect of the day. After pinning a multitude of branches to the float, my fingertips, along with the rest of the group, were looking metallic from the pins we were using. How long we were doing this I’m not sure, but I know that we were all determined to make the float look as amazing as possible. At the end of the day when we were all leaving, we all glance back at the float we had worked on all day. I was immensely proud in our work, as was everyone else. All the hard work that day was absolutely worth it, especially when on January 2nd, we could all point to the television screen and shout, “I helped make that float!”.
