Hey You! Yes, you. I hope you had

a great first month of school! I

am going to start off this

newsletter with part of an article

I read in the September Key

Club Magazine.

Give the Gift of Memories “It’s true: Key Club

memories last a lifetime.

What are your Key Club

memories? What has left a deep

impression on you? It could be

anything: a project that

improved your community, a

club fundraiser for an

organization you believe in, a

leadership weekend at Key

Leader or a fun social where

you bonded with your

classmates.

This year, I challenge

you to help others make some

cherished memories of their

own. You already understand

why being in key Club is so

awesome, so follow the steps to

ensure your fellow members

think so too. My challenge to

you isn’t just for school. Do your

relatives volunteer with you?

Encourage your relatives to

create new memories serving

School

Project Ideas! Clowning Around

Arrange to make, buy, or rent some clown

suits and nominate club members to be

clowns. Take the whole Key Club to a

hospital with balloons for sick children.

Clothing Drive

Solicit donations and place donation bins

around town so people can donate their

used clothing. Once clothing is collected,

take it to a local church group or to

another community-service group or

shelter.

Clean-Up Campaign

Your Key Club could invite all clubs and

organizations to participate in a citywide

clean-up campaign. The city is divided

into sections for each club. Solicit food

donations from area pizza restaurants to

feed the volunteers.

Food Basket Distribution

Contact a low-income housing

association and work out a schedule to

distribute hand out food baskets to low-

income families in your community.

Library Volunteer

Members can help the librarians,

especially during inventory at the end of

the year.

Mentally Disabled Center

Volunteer your Key Club’s services to work

at a center for persons with mental

disabilities. For members’ personal benefit,

it is worthwhile to pair off into “special buddies” for outings, games, etc.

9 one baby dies every nine minutes from

neonatal tetanus

160 160 babies die from neonatal

tetanus every day

110 Our goal is to raise US$110 million to

eliminate MNT by 2015.

1.80 On average, health education

and a series of three doses of tetanus

vaccine cost US$1.80.

61 Using this average, Kiwanis will help

save or protect more than 61 million

mothers and their future babies.

38 38 countries remain at high risk for

MNT.

9,000 Ultimately, 9,000 Kiwanis leaders

will help achieve our fundraising goal.

2015 The Eliminate Project’s fundraising

campaign culminates in 2015.

Kiwanis Project

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis

International and UNICEF have joined forces

to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly

60,000 innocent babies and a significant

number of women each year. The effects of

the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns

suffer repeated, painful convulsions and

extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more

than 100 million mothers and their future

babies must be immunized. This requires

vaccines, syringes, safe storage,

transportation, thousands of skilled staff and

more. It will take US$110 million — and the

dedicated work of UNICEF and every member

of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to

tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving

one of the most significant public health

successes of the 20th century. Now, they are

eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth.

And in doing so, the project will reach the

poorest, most neglected mothers and babies

with additional lifesaving health care. The end

of this one disease means the beginning of

better health for so many families.

=Major Emphasis Program

Some of these organizations are part of the Major Emphasis Program! Major Emphasis Program

(MEP) is a program in which Key Club International challenges all Key Clubs and members to

focus their energies on making an international impact. The purpose of the Major Emphasis

Program Committee is to promote the service initiative and service partners by coming up with

new project ideas.

The Mission To raise money and

awareness of childhood

cancer causes, primarily

research into new

treatments and cures

and to encourage and

empower others,

especially children, to

raise money for childhood cancer by holding their

own Alex's Lemonade Stands. Alexandra “Alex” Scott was born on January 18, 1996

and was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (a type of

childhood cancer) just before her first birthday. In 2000

the day after receiving a stem cell transplant, she told

her mother that she wanted to start a lemonade stand

and raised $2,000 for her hospital. In August 2004, Alex

passed away at eight years old and raised over one

million dollars with the help of others, to find a cure for

childhood cancer. Today the ALSF has raised more than

$30 million and more than $12 million coming from

lemonade stands.

For more information go to alexslemonade.org.

Operation Blessing International Relief and

Development Corporation (OBI) is a 501 nonprofit,

humanitarian organization headquartered in

Virginia Beach, Virginia. Through core programs of

disaster relief, medical aid, hunger relief, orphan

care, water wells and community

development, OBI is dedicated

to demonstrating God’s love

by alleviating human need

and suffering in the United

States and around the world.

The Mission Building Tomorrow (BT) is an international social-profit organization

encouraging philanthropy among young people by raising awareness

and funds to build and support educational infrastructure projects for

under-served children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Building Tomorrow empowers students to raise money and build primary schools for kids who couldn’t

otherwise afford to go to school. They are committed to encouraging students to look beyond their own

lives and to work to improve the lives of others. Key Clubbers have the power to make a huge impact in

the lives of children thousands of miles away. Over the past few years, they have compiled a lot of great

event ideas from other Key Clubs across the country! Once you sign-up to work with Building Tomorrow,

your club will be provided with fundraising ideas, event guides, marketing & Publicity materials, videos and

more! For more information visit Buildingtomorrow.org.
