Dear SCP Members,

We are delighted to invite you to join your colleagues for a stellar educational and career-building experience at the 2018 APA Convention in San Francisco, CA. The 2018 SCP Program was created to offer diverse and broad opportunities for learning, as well as opportunities to network with both old and new colleagues, as well as leaders in the field.

We are thrilled with the quality of symposia, workshops, and individual presentations in this year’s SCP (Division 12) Program. This year’s programming includes presentations related to sociocultural identities, technology and social media, evidence-based treatment and outcome monitoring, clinical training, and more. In particular, we hope you will join us for Friday’s programming, which includes an invited address by Dr. Steven Hollon at 4:00pm followed by the Speed Mentoring Event, Social Hour, and Awards Ceremony.

We look forward to seeing you in August!

Your 2018 Program Chairs:

Kate McHugh, Ph.D.

A Note from your Program Chairs

Welcome to San Francisco, CA

Welcome to the 126th Annual APA Convention in San Francisco, CA

Welcome to the Golden Gate city, and Annual APA Convention. On behalf of the leadership of the Society of Clinical Psychology (SCP, Division 12), I wish you a personal welcome and hope you have a memorable and rewarding time at the meetings. This brochure presents the details of the SCP program, including sessions of our Sections as well as additional programming in our Divisional Suite. Our programming this year is an amazing series of invited addresses, panels, and poster sessions (three of them, one each day). We hope you enjoy it.

Our phenomenal program was put together by our SCP Convention Program Co-Chairs Drs. R. Kathryn McHugh and Courtney Beard. We are grateful for their six months of tireless effort towards this rich outcome. Thank you, both. We are provided a broad ranging assortment of contributions that span the entire science-to-practice continuum. Timely and significant.

I would like to note a couple of sessions that address longstanding challenges in clinical psychology. On Thursday, August 9, at 3pm in room 314 of the Moscone Center, Dr. Rochelle Babins-Wagner will report on 10 years of clinical research using routine outcome measurement with all patients and all therapists in a large community agency to improve clinical outcome. Clinical psychology making a real difference. Earlier on Thursday, starting at noon, in room 207 of the Moscone Center, I will be chairing a two-hour session entitled Leaving It At the Office: Psychologist Self-Care and Revitalization, featuring five experienced psychotherapists reporting on their own self-care routines developed over their careers to keep themselves sharp and focused and healthy. Again, putting clinical psychology into practice. On Friday, August 10, at 4pm in Room 207 of the Moscone Center, Dr, Steven D. Hollon will speak on How psychology won the battle and lost the war to medications – and what to do about it.

This is just the smallest sampling of a tremendous program that addresses issues across the entire career spectrum. There is a session on the internship application process Saturday morning at 10am in 206 Moscone, and another one for early career psychologist a hour earlier at 9am in Rooms 20-21 Moscone. There are multiple sessions on refining our skills for working with individuals coping with opioid addiction, traumatic stress, complex PTSD, and behavioral emergencies. And, there are 8 sessions on cultural and social justice topics.

Remember, an important part of the convention is networking. Be sure to join the Division 12 social activities late on Friday. These will be held in the Hilton SF Union Square Hotel, in Rooms 1, 2, and 3. At 5pm in Hilton Room 3, the Early Career /Student Social as well as the Speed Mentoring Event will be held. From 6pm to 7:50pm, join us in Hilton Rooms 1 & 2 for the Division 12 Social Hour and Award Ceremony. Please drop in for a few bites and a drink – and informal conversation. Enjoy San Francisco and the APA convention!

Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice presents cutting-edge developments in the science and practice of clinical psychology and related mental health fields by publishing scholarly articles, primarily involving narrative and systematic reviews as well as meta-analyses related to assessment, intervention, and service delivery. It is the official publication of APA Division 12, the Society of Clinical Psychology. The journal publishes papers from all theoretical perspectives in clinical psychology and considers all methods and approaches to research. Manuscripts covering theory, psychopathology, assessment, psychotherapy, process research, outcome research, professional issues, and similar topics are appropriate for the Journal. Occasionally empirical papers primarily concerned with broad education and/or clinical research are published, if directly related to the Society's mission and projects. Theoretical/clinical descriptions without a sound empirical basis are not appropriate for the journal. Manuscripts are expected to end with a clear summary of what is known on the topic, as well as a section on the concrete and practical application of that knowledge in clinical practice.

Workshop 001 is cosponsored by Division 12, Society of Clinical Psychology.

After clarifying values and stating intentions, what are ways to help your clients, employees, or patients get to, complete, and maintain behavioral change? This interme-diate workshop focuses on translating advances in motivational research into stepwise interventions to enhance and maintain motivation, taking into account both strategic and habitual processing (your dual nature). Motivational interventions are presented from a transdiagnostic perspective, so that no matter whether your clients are focusing on weight loss, reducing procrastination/avoidance, completing behavioral assignments, managing employees, or maintaining healthy behaviors, this workshop will be of value.

This workshop is designed to help you:

1. Describe common cognitive and affective factors that derail the pursuit of goals, especially across longer intervals.

2. Discuss the role of context in behavioral self-control and the importance of manipu-lating context to influence motivation.

3. Explain motivational factors across chains of behavior, focusing on antecedent, concurrent, and consequent events.

4. Analyze factors that influence the ability to apply strategic processing and alternative self-control strategies.

Incorporating Appetite Awareness Training Into Interventions for Eating ConcernsLinda A. Craighead, PhD, Elise V. Ozbardakci, MS, and Devika Basu, BA, Emory University

Wednesday, August 8

1:50–4:50 p.m.

Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel, Yosemite Room A/Ballroom Level

Workshop 004 is cosponsored by Division 12, Society of Clinical Psychology.

Appetite Awareness Training (AAT) is a cognitive behavioral intervention designed to restore a more natural feeling of control over eating. AAT uses self-monitoring to train individuals to use internal cues of moderate hunger and fullness to regulate eating rather than respond primarily to unhelpful cues. AAT discourages “getting too hungry” as well as “getting too full” to normalize amounts eaten before targeting food type. This interme-diate workshop discusses the application of AAT to a range of disordered eating issues and to weight management, as well as use of the Mindful Eating Coach app. Participants will receive the children’s book Training Your Inner Pup to Eat Well.

This workshop is designed to help you:

1. Outline the rationale for AAT to a client and describe the model as applied to specific eating disorders and to weight management.

2. Instruct an adult in the use of appetite self-monitoring (written and electronic) and explain how to fade written monitoring to mental monitoring.

3. Train a parent in how to use AAT materials to talk to children in a positive way, using child-friendly metaphors, about healthy eating.

4. Discuss how to incorporate the AAT focus on mindful eating within broader approaches such as dialectical behavior therapy to address related emotional and behavioral issues.
