zy DIVING ON THE TITANIC General Meeting ~ November 16 @ 7:30 pm ~ Greenwich Boat & Yacht Club with Paul-Henry Nargeolet Director of Underwater Research Program at Premier Exhibitions, RMS Titanic, Inc Mr. Nargeolet is a deep-sea diver who has visited the wreck site more than 30 times! For the last two-and-a-half decades, he has worked for RMS Titanic, Inc., which is the sole legal steward, conservator, and curator of the wreck site. Nargeolet-led teams have excavated more than 5,000 artifacts from the wreck site, pieces which form the core of award winning Titanic exhibitions, including shaving kits, toys, pipes, crystal decanters, a chandelier from an on-ship restaurant and, yes, even some deckchairs. In his pre-Titanic career, he was a Commander in the French Navy, a diver, and a UDT/EOT team captain, working on mine-hunter ships removing explosives. After the navy, he worked for the French Institute for Research and Exploitation of the Sea, where he was asked to be in charge of the Titanic expedition. It was in 1987, on board of the French submersible “Nautile” that he first saw the submerged ship. “As we approached the bow, we all went silent. There was absolutely no sound in the sub. I was in awe. But I felt sadness too; I could almost see the people walking in the deck. I thought about the ship sinking, about those passengers.” Nargeolet believes that the sinking of Titanic remains a compelling story because it still speaks to human folly and people of all walks of life. After years of commuting across the Atlantic, Nargeolet decided to move to backcountry Greenwich permanently in 2001 but he now lives in Kent. "Greenwich is very important to me because this is where it all began," Nargeolet said of his Titanic career”.
