ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension Unit

General RecommendationsPREFORMEDTM ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension Unit is intended for use on all material types and conductor construction. Designed to reduce the static and dynamic stresses at the support point so the conductor is protected against the effects of conductor motion. It also protects the conductor in the support area against impulse and power flash-over arching.

The PREFORMEDTM ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension is superior to armor-clamp combinations for protecting conductors from bending, compression stress and abrasion.

Line Repairs: Where a conductor has been damaged by a bolted clamp. The PREFORMEDTM ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension can be used in the repair. All ARMOR-GRIP® Suspensions can be applied over PREFORMEDTM type armor rods to restore and extend the life of the conductor.

Line Angle: The maximum recommended line angle for a single support AGS is 30°. For angles between 30° and 60°, the ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension Double Assembly is recommended.

TWIN-TIESTie Pad: For bare conductor a tubular elastomeric pad is supplied which must be placed under the conductor in the top groove of the insulator. The pad is not required with jacketed conductor.

Centre Section: Only the section applied to the conductor is helical, the remainder is cabled to ensure a snug firm fit on the insulator.

Material Used: TWIN-TIES are made of material compatible with the conductor to which they will be applied.

Lay Direction: The Lay Direction of the tie must be the same as that of the conductor.

General RecommendationsTWIN-TIES are intended for use in securing conductors to the top groove of insulators, the neck configuration of which may not be suitable for WRAPLOCK® or DISTRIBUTION-TIES. The neck configuration is described in the next paragraph.

They provide an improved method of securing conductors when compared to hand-binding or insulator clamps. Protection is provided against conductor abrasion, as occurs with hand-binding, and they provide better RIV characteristics. The pad provides protection for the conductor against abrasion from the insulator.

Insulators: TWIN-TIES will perform well on any vertically mounted insulator with a neck groove diameter exceeding 15 mm but is designed especially to cater for insulators with a shallow lip at the top of the groove, making them unsuitable for WRAPLOCK®-TIES. Typical insulators of this type are 1017 (Old Design) and 1018 (Old Design)

Line Angles: On vertically mounted insulators TWIN-TIES will accept an angle deviation up to 10º. Larger angles may be accommodated on after consultation with PLP.

TWIN-TIES will permit controlled movement of the conductor reducing load on the base of the insulator.

Vibration Dampers: TWIN-TIES provide, as do all PREFORMEDTM products, protection against vibration fatigue, however on lines subject to severe vibration the use of Spiral Vibration Dampers is recommended.

Tee-offs: Tee-offs should be applied on the conductor beyond the ends of the tie.

Vertical Mounting: On vertically-mounted pin insulators or bobbin type insulators, Side Ties should be used.

Application: Ensure that the correct size fitting is used and consult “Here’s How with PREFORMEDTM” for application instructions. Always insure that the one part interlocks with the other part so that the colour marks are top and bottom respectively.

Ordering: State the conductor material, diameter, stranding and lay direction of the outer strands. Guessing nominal area can cause delivery of the wrong size fitting. Also quote insulator reference number and neck diameter.

TWIN-TIES can normally be supplied for any type or size of conductor up to 25 mm diameter. Remember the initial parameters are conductor diameter plus 6 mm for the pad in deciding whether the top groove diameter is adequate.

NOTE: WHEN ORDERING TWIN-TIES IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT THE NECK DIAMETER AND INSULATOR TYPE ARE QUOTED.

Armored Road Crossing TWIN-TIESThe Armored Road Crossing Twin-Tie was developed and tested in conjunction with a major electricity supply authority and the original concept approved by the Department of Machinery and Occupational Safety. It fully protects the conductor either side of the insulator top at road crossings.

Photographic evidence of insulator flashovers, under laboratory conditions, carried out in the U.S.A. by our principals clearly illustrated that when PREFOREDTM insulator ties were used the flashover occurred mainly on the tie. The conductor was not involved, and was protected by the PLP tie.

This was not the case when “hand ties” were sub jected to the same series of tests. The flashover involved both the “hand tie” and the conductor.

The follow-up after this investigation was the development of a tie which would fully armour the conductor on either side of the insulator top and with adequate holding strength to maintain the statutory road crossing ground clearance in accordance with statutory requirements.

Field tests subsequently carried out proved conclusively that the newly developed Preformed road crossing tie met the statutory requirements.

WRAPLOCK® TIE

The Neoprene pad which is a slit tube is applied around the bare conductor to provide a cushion between the conductor and the insulator groove surface. The Neoprene cover centre section with the pad surrounds the conductor in a neoprene protective layer.

General Recommendations WRAPLOCK® Ties, manufactured of aluminium alloy wire, secure secures conductor in the top groove of interchangeable head-style insulators.

WRAPLOCK® Ties provide an improved method of securing conductor compared to clamp-top insulator or hand ties over Armour Rods.

Wraplock® Pad: WRAPLOCK® Ties provide superior abrasion protection for the conductor under all types of motion, including low frequency sway oscillation and high frequency aeolian vibration, and galloping. The pad component provides the bare conductor with resilient cushion where it would otherwise come into contact with the insulator. With the pad, WRAPLOCK® Ties not only replace original armoring product, but provide superior protection by eliminating abrasion rather than sacrificing outside surfaces to abrasion.

Vibration Dampers: By using WRAPLOCK® Ties, the vibration fatigue life is maximized to the extent that the original endurance limit of the conductor is not reduced by abrasion on its outside surface. However, on selected lines where experience indicates that prolonged periods of vibration might approach the fatigue life of the conductor, or cause inner wire fretting it will be necessary to supplement with dampers.

The following are guideline definitions for vibration activity. They should be applied to a Utility’s own experience on lines in a given area.

“Excessive” Vibration: Areas where abrasion damage has been known to occur require replacement of both hand tie wire and protective rods, or where fatigue has been found under clamps. Protective rods should be replaced when visual inspection shows approximately ¼ of the rod diameter has been worn away.

“Severe” Vibration: Areas where abrasion has required replacement of hand-tie wire, but less than ½ of the protective rod’s diameter has been worn away.

“Moderate” Vibration: Areas where replacement of hand-tie wire has not been required, and damage is minor. WRAPLOCK® Ties provide protection in areas of “severe” or “moderate” vibration. For areas experiencing “excessive” vibration supplemental use of damper is recommended. Spiral Vibration Damper’s single purpose is to prevent the unlimited accumulation of aeolian vibration.

Insulators: WRAPLOCK® Ties are suitable for use on only those insulators which correspond to C-neck, F-neck, H-neck, and J-neck designs. Details of these designs appear in the I.E.C. 720 publication. When an insulator is not suited to the WRAPLOCK® Tie, then the PREFORMED™ TWIN-TIES can be used. Consult the factory for engineering recommendation when in doubt.

Conductor Size: Conductor sizes up to 31.50 mm O.D. can be accommodated depending on the insulator’s top groove radius. In cases of doubt consult PLP for recommendations.

Mechanical Strength: Maximum holding strength is usually sufficient to contain the broken conductor to a single span, however, the WRAPLOCK® Tie is designed to relieve the load before severe damage is done to the pole’s structural components. The WRAPLOCK® Tie is designed to permit controlled movement of unbroken conductor, reducing cantilever loading at the base of the insulator or bracket, then restore itself. We refer to this unique feature as “resilience.”

Radio Interference: The RIV characteristics of the WRAPLOCK® Tie are equivalent to those of a well-made hand tie when originally installed. During service life the precontoured Tie assures continued fit which would have better RIV than a loosened tie wire.

Tapping: Compared to the use of protective rods, placing hot-line clamps directly over the applied leg of the WRAPLOCK® Ties cannot be recommended. Tapping over protective rods will remain permissible; however, there are stirrups available now that provide a superior method of making hot-line taps.

Line Angles: On vertically-mounted insulators, WRAPLOCK® Ties are recommended for running line angles up to 10 degrees. Larger angles can be turned when the WRAPLOCK® Tie is combined with insulator or brackets having various degrees of cant. A technical report is available which describes turning angles as a function of the insulator cant.

Double Support: At double cross-arms PREFORMED™ Double-Support Ties can be used to cross major highways and railroads, or turn angles where it is practical to hold the conductor in the top groove during installation.

When Ordering: TO ENSURE PROPER FIT AND SERVICE LIFE, THE INSULATOR TYPE AND NECK DIAMETER MUST BE QUOTED (IN ADDITION TO CONDUCTOR DETAILS)

Side and Spool Ties

General RecommendationsSide-Ties for bare conductor include a neoprene tie pad interspaced between the insulator and conductor. Because of the very small contact area afforded, high pressure and bending stresses may accelerate abrasion damage at the insulator-conductor interface if the conductor is not protected. In the case of plastic covered conductor it is unnecessary to use a Side-Tie pad since the plastic covering itself provides the necessary conductor protection at the insulator.

Maximum Size: The factors which determine the absolute maximum diameter of conductor allowable for specific pin insulator Side-Tie combination are, the dimensions of the side groove in insulator; diameter of rods in manufacture of Side-Tie and clearance for application dictated by helical loop geometry. Because the clearance for application is the same whether or not the Tie-Pad is installed, the maximum allowable conductor outside diameter is not reduced by the addition of the Tie-Pad.

SIDE-TIE is recommended as being superior to Armour-Rod – Hand tie combinations for protection against abrasion damage. The Side-Tie is equivalent to a well made Armour Rod – hand tie combination in regard to conductor fatigue.

Vibration Dampers: By using Side-Ties, the vibration fatigue life is maximized to the extent that the original endurance limit of the conductor is not reduced by abrasion on its outside surface. However, on selected lines where experience indicates that prolonged periods of vibration might approach the fatigue life of the conductor, or cause inner wire fretting it will be necessary to supplement with dampers. Armor Rods

General RecommendationsProtection: PREFORMED™ Armor Rods are intended to protect against bending, compression, abrasion, and arc-over, and to provide repair. The degree of protection needed on specific line depends on a number of factors such as line design, temperature, tension, and exposure to wind flow, and vibration history on similar construction in the same area. As a general guide, the following recommendations may be adapted to the specific conditions. Armor Rods are recommended as minimum protection for bolted clamp-type supports or suspensions. Armor rods are recommended as minimum protection for use with hand-tied spans of 90 metres or more. Line Guards are recommended as minimum protection for hand-tied spans of less than 90 metres in urban construction having no experience of vibration. The use of supplementary damping devices should be considered in areas experiencing a history of vibration problems. Spiral Vibration Dampers should be given serious consideration when distribution conductor spans exceed 105 metres and/or 15 percent tension at 16ºC.

Application-Inspection: After application of the correct number of rods per set, a slight gap between rods should be present. Apply no more than one-half the number of rods per set at a time on smaller sizes. On conductor 12mm and larger, do not attempt to apply more than four rods at a time. The alignment of the ends of the rods should be maintained within 50 mm for voltages of 230 KV and lower.

Armor Rods: Parrot-Bill® EndsTo meet the corona onset and RIV requirement for most extra-high voltage application. PARROT-BILL® Ends are to be used instead of the standard ball-end rods. Consult PLP for an engineering recommendation.

O.D. CalculationsApplied overall diameter computed as follows:

The rod diameter can be obtained from the catalogue page tables. Conductor/strand O.D. can be found in conductor charts.

Rod Diameter. 3mm x 2 = 6.00mm

Conductor Diameter. + 4.78mm

Total Applied O.D. 10.78mm

Design Modification: WRAPLOCK® Ties are recommended as being superior to armor-tie combinations in providing protection for abrasion, and equivalent in providing protection from vibration fatigue. ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension is recommended as being superior to armor-clamp combinations in providing protection from bending stress and abrasion.

Armor Rods Restorative-Repair: Armor Rods may be used to restore full conductance and strength to ACSR and aluminum conductors where damage does not exceed approximately 50 percent of the outer strand layers. Consult PLP for repair capability of specific stranding.

Note: All conductor, new or weathered MUST be thoroughly wire-brushed and coated with a good quality inhibitor along the area where restorative repair fittings are to be applied. Damage should be located at the “point of support” or within the “midspan area”

Tapping: Tapping over applied aluminum or Hard drawn copper Armor Rods is permissible. Where it is known that Tapping clamps will be installed over Armor-Rods, an inhibitor must be applied.

Material Selection: For copper conductor, Copperweld Armor Rods are recommended when electrical requirements such as tapping or repair are not involved. Where such requirements are involved Hard Drawn Copper Armor Rods may be used.

Line Guards

General RecommendationsProtection: PREFORMED™ Line Guards are intended to protect against abrasion, and arc-over, and to provide repair. The degree of protection needed on specific line depends on a number of factors such as line design, temperature, tension, and exposure to wind flow, and vibration history on similar construction in the same area. As a general guide, the following recommendations may be adapted to the specific conditions.

Line Guards are recommended as minimum protection for hand-tied spans of less than 90 metres in urban construction having no experience of vibration.

Distribution Ties are recommended as an improvement over Line Guards secured with hand tie wire. They protect against chafing or wear caused by wind sway or unbalanced loading in urban-type areas having no experience of vibration. Distribution Ties also provide a stronger material and greater uniformity than hand tie wire.

Armor Rods are recommended as minimum protection for clamp-type supports or suspensions. Armor Rods are recommended as minimum protection for use with hand-tied spans of 90 metres or more.

No consideration of damping devices with Line Guards is made because Line Guards are not recommended when vibration is suspected.

Restorative-Repair: Line Guards may be used as patch rods designed to restore full conductance and strength to ACSR and aluminum conductors where damage is located outside the support area and does not exceed 25 percent of the outer strand layers. Consult Factory when damage is located at the point of support.

Note: All conductor, new or weathered MUST be thoroughly wire-brushed and coated with a good quality inhibitor along the area where restorative repair fittings are to be applied.

O.D. CalculationsApplied overall diameter computed as follows:

The rod diameter can be obtained from the catalogue page tables. Conductor/strand O.D. can be found in conductor charts.

Rod Diameter. 3mm x 2 = 6.00mm

Conductor Diameter. + 4.78mm

Total Applied O.D. 10.78mm

Tapping: Line Guards may be used as tap armour to protect conductors from wear and flash-over damage under hot line taps. Where it is known that tapping clamps will be installed over Line Guards, it is recommended that an inhibitor be applied.

Application-Inspection: After application of the correct number of rods per set, a slight gap between rods should be present.

Apply no more than one-half the number of rods per set at a time on smaller sizes. On conductor 12mm and larger, do not attempt to apply more than three rods at a time. The alignment of the ends of the rods should be maintained within 50 mm.

Armor Splice

General RecommendationsPREFORMED™ ARMOR SPLICE is designed as a single component outer layer assembly to repair severe conductor damage which has occurred under suspension clamp or pin-insulator binder position.

Joining: On All-aluminium, Aluminium Alloy and copper conductors of homogeneous stranding the Armor Splice will hold the full rated breaking strength of, and provide better conductance than an equal length of unspliced conductor.

On ACSR conductor the Armor Splice will hold a minimum tension amounting to the full strength of the aluminium strands plus 10% of the steel core strength. Conductance will be better than an equivalent length of unspliced conductor.

Restorative-Repair: Armor Splice will restore original conductivity to All-Aluminium, Aluminium Alloy, Copper and ACSR, conductors. Full rated breaking strength will be restored to homogeneous stranded conductors. On ACSR strength will be restored to all of the Aluminium strands, but not to the core. When core damage to ACSR, is suspended see catalogue sheets for FULL TENSION LINE SPLICE.

Other PREFORMED™ products with restorative repair capabilities are: Armor Rods, Line Guards, and ARMOR-GRIP Suspension for line repair. RATED HOLDING STRENGTH: See data sheets for individual sizes. In arriving at “Rated Holding Strength”, actual results of tests on un-weathered conductors are studied and consideration is given to dimension at tolerances for the sizes encompassed.

Application and Inspection: Wire Brushing. All conductors, new or weathered, MUST be thoroughly wire-brushed before the fitting is applied.

Inhibitors: All conductors, new or weathered, MUST be coated with a quality inhibitor along the area where the fitting is to be applied Lay direction of both the splice and the conductor must be the same

Production Information: The ARMOR SPLICE combines the features of both ARMOR RODS and Conductor Splices, which are described in their respective catalogue sections. The ARMOR SPLICES should be considered when damage occurs in the “support area” or where installation would locate the ends of repair rods within 150 mm of existing rods.

Upon receipt of the field information specified above, the factory will furnish the correct Catalogue Number. The Armor Splice is custom designed to assure that when the colour code mark is centred at the support point, a continuous length will extend beyond the area of damage.

Catalogue No.: ASS (Aluminium); CAS (Copper)

Line Splice

General RecommendationsConductor Splices are designed as a single component outer-layer assembly for Sub-EHV only.

Joining: On all-alluminium, aluminium alloy, and copper conductors of homogeneous stranding, this Conductor Splice will hold a minimum of 90% of the rated breaking strength of, and provide better conductance than, an equal length of unspliced conductor.

On ACSR conductor, this Conductor Splice will hold a minimum tension amounting to the full strength of the aluminium strands plus 10% of the steel core strength. Conductance will be better than in an equivalent length of unspliced conductor.

Restorative-Repair: Conductor Splices will restore original conductivity to all-aluminium, aluminium alloy, copper and ACSR type conductors. Full rated breaking strength will be restored to homogeneous stranded conductors. On ACSR, strength will be restored to all of the aluminium strands, but not to the core. When core damage on ACSR is suspected, consult the catalogue pages for Full Tension Line Splice.

Other PREFORMEDTM products with restorative-repair capabilities are Armor Rods, Line Guards and ARMOR-GRIP®

Suspension: For Line Repair.

Rated Holding Strength: In arriving at “Rated Holding Strength,” actual results of tests on unweathered conductor are studied, and consideration is given to dimensional tolerances for the sizes encompassed.

Application-Inspection: To assure a reliable electrical connection, all conductors, new or weathered, must be thoroughly scratch brushed until bright and clean immediately prior to installation.

The application of a quality inhibitor, compatible with the conductor material, is strongly recommended to retard oxidation.

Tapping: Tapping over a conductor splice is per missible. When ever a tapping clamp will be installed over a splice, it is imperative that the conductor be scratch brushed and an inhibitor be used. The outer surface of the splice should be thoroughly scratch brushed to remove any oxides and glue which may be present. Inhibitor should then be applied to the area beneath the tap itself.

Conductor Splices should not be re-used after original installation.

Wire Brushing: All conductors, new or weathered, MUST be thoroughly wire brushed before the fitting is applied.

Inhibitors: All conductors, new or weathered, MUST be coated with a quality inhibitor along the area where the fitting is to be applied.

When centred over the point of damage, the ends of the Conductor Splice should not be positioned closer than 152mm to existing Armor Rods or Line Guards.

The Restorative-Repair function of the splice should be limited to damage located within the Mid-Span Area or the point of support.

Outer Splice: Aluminium alloy, sub-setted and gritted.

Centre Mark: Establishes recommended alignment of rods during application.

Colour Code and Length: Assist in identification of conductor size, corresponding to tabular information appearing on data pages.

Identification Tape: Shows catalogue number, nominal sizes.

General RecommendationsFull Tension Line Splice is designed as a three component assembly.

The Core Splice is applied after removal of the aluminium strands down to the steel core.

Filler rods, when required, are applied over the Core Splice to re-establish the original outside diameter of the conductor.

Full Tension Line Splice

The Outer Splice is identical in design to the conductor Splice (previous section) except for the added length to compensate for removal of the aluminium strands.

Joining: This splice will hold the full rated breaking strength of, and provide better conductivity than, an equal length of unspliced ACSR.

Restorative-Repair: Full Tension Splice will restore original conductivity and full rated breaking strength to ACSR conductor. This splice is recommended when damage to the core itself is suspected, or when joining ACSR.

Other PREFORMEDTM products with restorative-repair capabilities are Armor Rods, Line Guards, and ARMOR-GRIP® Suspension: for Line Repair.

Rated Holding Strength: In arriving at “Rated Holding Strength,” actual results of tests on un weathered conductors are studied, and consideration is given to dimensional tolerances for the sizes encompassed.

Wire Brushing: All conductors, new or weathered, MUST be thoroughly wire brushed before the fitting is applied.

Inhibitors: All conductors, new or weathered, MUST be coated with a quality inhibitor along the area where the fitting is to be applied.

T-Connector

General RecommendationsIntended Use: T-Connectors join slack laterals (TAP) to vertically spaced primaries (RUN) which can be reached by bucket truck. Extra poles can be eliminated while permitting equal spans for street lighting.

A pair of T-Connectors installed back-to-back provide a mid-span junction for vertically spaced primaries. Poles can be set back from intersections and buck-arms eliminated.

T-Connectors are available for conductors of equal and unequal diameters (REDUCING TYPE).

Holding Strength: T-Connectors are conservatively rated at 25% of the rated breaking strength of the conductor. Because of their intended use on slack span laterals or junctions of continuous conductors, mechanical requirements are not expected to approach 25% R.H.S.

Line Angles: Slack span laterals (TAP) should not exceed the line angle shown in the illustration, to ensure ease of application and to avoid over stressing the T-Connector.

Conductivity: T-Connectors, both regular and reducing types, are designed to a minimum conductivity of 100% of the smallest conductor.

Application-Inspection: Installation is accomplished with bucket trucks. Scratch brushing to thoroughly remove oxidation deposits from the conductor’s surface is recommended immediately prior to application.

To insure a reliable electrical connection, all conductors, new or weathered, must be thoroughly scratch brushed until bright and clean immediately prior to installation.

The application of a quality inhibitor, compatible with the conductor material must be used to retard oxidation.

Conductor Cleaning Brush

• Tough tubular construction – Provides all round cleaning in one action.

• Fine Stainless Steel bristles – Provide efficient cutting action without the harmful goug ing of the conductor surface.

• Strong flexible hinging – Enables most conductor sizes to be easily accommodated and allows for easy cleaning of the brush

• Pocket sized – Fits snugly into the hand for comfortable use and can be easily carried in the field

• Colour coded – Red for copper, blue for aluminium – hence reducing the risk of cross contamination.

Light hand pressure around the cleaning brush is all that is required to enable it to bite into unwanted oxides and produce a clean shiny conductor surface in a matter of minutes.

Important Note: Separate brushes must be used for ‘copper and aluminium conductors to avoid cross contamination.

Parallel Groove Clamps

PREFORMED™ Universal Parallel Groove Clamps are designed to accommodate three ranges of conductor diameters, 4.11 – 11.8 mm (PG 1646) 3.71 – 14.35 mm (PG 1556) and 6.63 – 18.92 mm (PG 2674). Each of these sizes can be supplied in 1, 2 or 3 bolt types and are available as all-aluminium or bi-metal connectors. The catalogue number to quote for say an all-aluminium HORNET/MINK Clamp with 3 bolts is PG 2674 – 3B. If a clamp with similar range for bi-metallic application is needed the catalogue number would be PG 2674 – 3G. All clamps are manufactured of aluminium alloy but the bi-metallic version is a test approved anti-corrosion plated product with a distinctive olive-passivated surface finish which differentiates it from the aluminium version.

The current carrying capacity quoted in the schedule is conservative, for instance, a PG 2674 – 3B has been tested at 550A for 3 hours during which the conductor temperature rose to 100ºC and that of the clamp to 78ºC. The maximum joint resistance was 54 micro ohms. The setscrews and washers used on our clamps are of similar material to the body, thus ensuring that there is equal expansion under all temperature conditions and consequently no tendency to loosen. These fittings are used extensively in South Africa and we are pleased to say users get complete satisfaction. A recommended non-oxide grease must be used with all clamps to minimise corrosion.

Dead End

General RecommendationsDead-End: Bare; manufactured from similar basic material to that of the conductor to which it should be applied as used in general distribution con struction.

Where conductors are of homogeneous stranding the Rated Holding Strength approximates the Rated Breaking Strength of the conductor.

On ACSR conductors the Rated Holding Strength approximates the full strength of the aluminium strands plus 10% of the steel core.

Vibration Dampers: The use of Spiral Vibration Dampers, see data in special section, should be considered for areas experiencing a history of vibration.

Application and Inspection: Dead-ends must not be re-used after original installation. Lay direction of both conductor and dead-end must be the same when terminating bare conductor. Suitable thimble clevises, described elsewhere in this catalogue, are manufactured for use with dead-ends.

PREFORMEDTM Dead-Ends up to Cat. No. ADE 760 are manufactured with a cabled loop to ensure ease of application and the minimum of “stretch” after installation.

Aluminium Alloy Thimble Clevis

These fittings designed for use with Dead Ends are cast in aluminium alloy LM6 and have a rated UTS of 40kN. Catalogue No. CAB 100. Suitable for use on HV Conductor terminations with insulators having tongue type spindles or tongue type adaptors.

The T-shaped segment incorporated within the mouth of the thimble is another PREFORMEDTM original innovation, and is compatible with the Thimble Regulating Eye described in the following page.

Dimensional details are as above.

The advantages of using this method of terminating are:

1. It is a distinct advantage to tension the conductors from the Thimble Clevis rather than from the cross-arm which is the alternative method.

2. The insulators are properly sited and placed in tension.

3. Conductor regulation, or sag, is made more precisely and easily.

4. The complete termination procedure is carried out quickly, efficiently, uniformly and safely.

5. 70 kN and 40 kN options.

Thimble Regulating Eye

Safe Working Load: 45 kN

The Thimble Regulating Eye has been designed and developed to facilitate conductor tensioning and easier installation of PREFORMEDTM Dead Ends. It is designed to fit the PREFORMEDTM Thimble Clevis as shown in this picture.

It is advantageous to tension from the Thimble Clevis, rather than from the crossarm, because the insulators are properly seated and placed in tension.

Application: The Thimble Regulating Eye is installed over, or under, the Thimble Clevis, with the legs fitting neatly into the “bow” of the Thimble Clevis. In practice it is preferable to fit it under the Thimble Clevis, so that when the tensioning hoist is released, the Regulating Eye is easily removed. The tensioning hoist is secured. to the loop of the Regulating Eye and to the conductor.

For safety reasons the Regulating Eye has been designed so that it does not suddenly drop down when tension is released.

Helical Arching Horn

General RecommendationsHelical arcing horn is another PLP innovative design concept intended for use on distribution lines up to 66kV.

Helical arcing horns provide protection of the loop of helical dead ends and of the adjacent insulator, against lightning strike and flashover. They are designed to wrap over the legs of the applied dead end, with the arcing tip pointed towards the pole, on new construction as well as being easily retrofitted on existing installations.

Materials Used: These fittings are made of material compatible with the conductor to which they will be applied, and the arcing tip is of adequate design to provide the required degree of protection.

Insulators: PLP arcing horns are available for long-rod and disc type insulators.

GUY-GRIP®

General RecommendationsGUY-GRIPS® are generally recommended for wood pole distribution and telecommunication construction.

Refer to section Big Grip dead-end, an alternative product recommended for staying transmission tower and antenna construction.

Refer to the page for the Preformed Pulling Eye, designed to assist with the application of GUY-GRIPS® on the stay rod.

RATED HOLDING STRENGTHS are at least equal to those of the staywire.

GUY-GRIPS® is supplied with a cabled loop to ease application and to prevent stretch.

Material Used: GUY-GRIPS® are made of the same basic material as the strand to which they are applied.

Application and Inspection: GUY-GRIPS® may be removed and re-applied three times, if necessary, on new construction, for the purpose of retensioning stays. GUY-GRIPS should not be re-used after original installation.

PREFORMEDTM GUY-GRIPS® up to Cat No. GSDE 640 are cable-looped to ensure ease of application and the minimum of “stretch” after installation.

BE SURE THE CORRECT SIZE IS USED

GUY-GRIPS® should be used on hardware that is held in a fixed position; the fitting should not be allowed to rotate or spin about the axis of the strand. They should not be used as, come-alongs tools, pulling-in grips etc; etc.

Lay direction of GUY-GRIPS® must be the same as that of the strand to which it is applied.

For appearance and safety the strand tail should be cut as close as convenient to the crossover mark. If desired, the strand tail can, instead, extend through the loop for earthing.

Please check with us as to the suitability of hardware adaptors for use with GUY-GRIPS®.

GUY-GRIP® Acceptable Fittings

Caution: Hardware of this type is not normally acceptable because fatigue life of GUY-GRIP® dead-ends could be substantially reduced.

Heavy-Duty-Type Cable Thimbles, if used, can collapse when guy tensions are high. If thimbles are used in the loop of the GUY-GRlP® dead-end, a large pin is recommended to fill the loop of the thimble to prevent distortion. The collapsing strength of the thimble and the proper pin size should be obtained from the thimble manufacturer.

Pole Top Make-off

General RecommendationsThe PREFORMEDTM Pole Top Make-Off is a complimentary fitting to the Guy-Grip, described earlier. It is in effect a custom built Pole Top Stay, and consists of a single set of 3 galvanised steel wires of 1400 M Pa strength, helically formed with a single unformed 700 M Pa core wire. The central part of the Make-Off is double-wrapped onto the pole top, after which the two legs are wrapped over the unformed wire to form a seven strand stay of similar strength and diameter to that of a normal staywire, the minimum effective “stay” length is 1800 mm. The central “king” wire is of sufficient length that the parts above the crossover may be utilised as an earth bond.

Similar fittings are designed for use with thimble adaptors.

Spiral Vibration Damper High Impact PVC

General RecommendationsDamping devices are designed for the single purpose of reducing vibration. This single function is entirely different from that of protecting against (1) stress concentrations, (2) fretting or abrasion, and (3) arc-over burning. Because of this, damping devices should be considered only as supplemental to Wraplock Tie, Armour Rod, Side Tie, Spool Tie, or other hardware at tangent supports. Dampers are also used as supplemental protection at dead-ends.

The degree of protection needed on a specific line depends upon a number of factors such as line design, temperature, tension, exposure to wind flow, and vibration history on similar construction in the same area. As a general guide, the following recommendations may be adapted to the specific conditions.

Spiral Vibration Dampers should be given serious consideration when distribution spans exceed 115M and/or 15% tension at 16°C. Spiral Vibration Dampers should be used on conductors between 4,4mm and 19,3mm outside diameter in areas experiencing or having a history of vibration.

Two Spiral Vibration Dampers are recommended to be installed one hand’s width apart, each side of the support, where spans exceed 244 M.

In spans 244 to 488 M: 2 SVD’s on each side of support point i.e. 4 per span.

Application and Inspection: The Gripping Section should be installed approximately one hand’s width from the ends of Armor Rod or other hardware.

It is not necessary to make engineering calculations as to placement.

Installation may be made with hot-sticks at selected locations, after vibration experience has been obtained through line inspections.

Application Instructions: The SPIRAL VIBRATION DAMPER has a large damping helix at one end and a smaller conductor gripping helix at the other. Determine which end has the small gripping helix.

Take the small gripping helix in one hand and rotate the other large damping end around the conductor feeding it into the span.

When all the large coils or pitches have been applied over the conductor position the smaller gripping pitches so this end of the section is approximately 100mm. or one hands width away from the dead-end, or intermediate support/suspension.

The gripping pitches can now be applied to the conductor which completes the application.

Additional Information: PREFORMEDTM SPIRAL VIBRATION DAMPERS are precision devices and should be handled carefully to prevent distortion and damage.

They should be stored in cartons under cover – preferably shelf storage until used. Tools should not be used to snap the ends into position during hand application. Ensure that the correct size fitting is used.

Lashing Rods

Colour Code and Length: Assist in identification of size, corresponding to tabular information appearing on price pages.

Rod Diameter: Identifies size of metal wire, corresponding to tabular information appearing on price pages. For covered rod, approximate thickness of plastic is indicated in addition to rod diameters.

General RecommendationsLashing Rods are intended for use on all types of messengered overhead cables. They are particularly adaptable to span obstructed by trees or short spans over traffic intersections.

Material Selection: Lashing Rods are made of the same basic material as the messenger to which they are applied. This pertains to galvanized, copperweld and alumoweld. Any of these materials can be selected from the price page tables. The recommended types of strand are also indicated.

Size Selection: In selecting the proper size Lashing Rod it is necessary to determine the smallest circumscribing circle that will enclose the messenger” and cables. The following table will be of assistance:

D = diam of cable/s m = diam of messenger. C = inside diam of lashing rod

1 Cable + 1 Messenger 3 Cables + 1 Messenger

C = (D + m) x 0,85 C = 2,155 D and max “m” = 0,483D

Application-InspectionThe smaller inside diameter of the proper size Lashing Rod should exert a low radial pressure on the cables and messenger.

For most installations, one Lashing Rod should be applied, overlapping one pitch length with each successive rod.

Two Lashing Rods, applied 180 degrees apart are recommended when the cable-messenger assembly weighs more than 12kg per metre, or at installations where the angle of sag exceeds 20 degrees from the horizontal.

Lashing Rods

For use in highly corrosive environment, or on extra heavy cables, a neoprene coating can be applied to the Galvanized, Copperweld, Alumoweld or Stainless Steel Lashing Rods appearing on the price pages. However, for normal outdoor power installations, the un-coated Lashing Rod will be satisfactory.

In calculating circumscribing diameters for size selection, the thickness of the neoprene coating can be neglected.

Consult the factory for neoprene covered Lashing Rod. Include the minimum circumscribing diameter and the type of messenger material.

Earth Guard

General RecommendationsThe system caters for both vertical and horizontal low voltage overhead line configurations: 400 volts, 3 phase, 4 wire. The moulded PVC hanger in both instances is manu factured from Geon 8700A (High impact) PVC to our Specification No. MS21.

The earth bar comprises a guillotined strip of stain less steel developed in South Africa and known as 3CR12 alloy.

Santoprene rubber grommets are used as thermal protection for the PVC rod and are fitted to the metal strip at the points of suspension.

This inexpensive method of thermal protection was introduced to cater for excessive rises in temperature of the metal strip due to prolonged fault current time intervals. The basic design of both vertical and horizontal units caters for various conductor spacings and numbers. A rectangular bar was chosen in preference to a round earth bar to ensure improved electrical contact especially in the case of badly oxidised conductors.

Catalogue No.: PEG – followed by sub-conductor spacing in mm, no. of conductors and “H” (horizontal) or “V” (vertical).

Testing: Field tests were carried out on actual distribution overhead lines in service with satisfactory results:

Test Parameters: Transformer rating 315 kVA, 4-wire 40 mm’ copper OH line

Earth fault current available approx 200 m from transformer approx 1350 amps.

Tripping time of 200 ampere HRC fuse 0,8 seconds

Test Results: 400 metres from transformer fault current available 725 amps Tripping time 0,8 seconds

PVC Spacer

General RecommendationsPVC SPACER UNIT: A new, inexpensive way of eliminating mid-span clashing on L.V. up to 4kV Distribution lines or telecommunications, circuits. Applied to parallel or converging lines, they maintain spacing required between adjacent spans. The helically formed legs assure absolute uniformity of each application.

Material: Made of rigid solid high impact polyvinyl chloride possessing excellent chemical and strength properties. Outdoor ageing tests carried out indicated that the material does not deteriorate in function or appearance from the effects of severe weather conditions. Industrial fumes and salt water cannot seriously degrade the properties of rigid vinyl, which has been formulated to resist ultra-violet rays.

Applications: PREFORMEDTM PVC Spacers have been designed with an inside diameter suitable for direct application to required mid-span locations. The spacer is easily wrapped on to adjacent wires by hand, without tools, in seconds.

The PVC SPACER can be manufactured to fit any conductor diameter in the range from 5 mm to 15 mm with spacing 100 mm to 400 mm. Other spacings and diameters are available on application. When ordering please state spacing and conductor diameter and stranding.
