GENERAL

HTD7

The HTD7 is a 5 disc, 6’ 8” (2.0 m) cutting widthmower. A tractor with a minimum of 35 hp (26kW) is required to operate the mower. Thetractor needs to be equipped with an enclosedcab, to protect the operator. The mowerattaches to the tractor with a Category I or IIthree-point hitch, and requires a single actingremote valve, for lifting the mower into transportposition.

HTD8

The HTD8 is a 6 disc, 7’ 10” (2.38 m) cuttingwidth mower. A tractor with a minimum of 40 hp(30 kW) is required to operate the mower. Thetractor needs to be equipped with an enclosedcab, to protect the operator. The mowerattaches to the tractor with a Category II three-point hitch, and requires a single acting remote

valve, for lifting the mower into transportposition.

HTD9

The HTD9 is a 7 disc, 9’ 2” (2.79 m) cuttingwidth mower. A tractor with a minimum of 45 hp(34 kW) is required to operate the mower. Thetractor needs to be equipped with an enclosed

cab, to protect the operator. The mowerattaches to the tractor with a Category II three-point hitch, and requires a single acting remotevalve, for lifting the mower into transportposition.

CUTTERBED

Easy Cutterbed access

Lifting the front curtain easily accesses themower cutterbed. Changing knives and periodicmaintenance can be quickly performed. Thecurtain can then just as easily be returned to theworking position.

Modular Bed Design

The cutterbed is designed so that if one cuttingmodule is damaged internally, it will notcontaminate the other modules. The modularbed design allows for replacement of the modulerather than disassembling the entire cutterbed,for ease of maintenance and service.

C2050 Segmented Drive Shaft

The segmented shaft allows the cutterbedmodules to be taken apart easily, withoutremoving a long driveshaft, greatly reducingrepair time. The shaft is a small diameter, tokeep the bed profile low. A low bed profile helps

keep the bed level when cutting, which reduces“scalloped” cutting and streaking.The hex shaftis also designed to absorb the shock if anobstruction is encountered in the field. Thisreduces the chance of damage to the moreexpensive gears and bearings.

Cutterbed drive

The modular cutterbar system consists of

individual modules and a segmented hex driveshaft. The segmented hex shaft and piniongears drive the cutterbed. The modularcutterbar drive requires less horsepower thancompetitive designs, so operators can utilizesmaller tractors efficiently.

Sealed Modules

Inside the sealed modules are cut steel beveldrive gears and sealed bearings. Thecutterbar’s reversible, hex driveshafts providelonger life and reduced operating cost. Eachcutterbar module consists of two main pieces,

the sealed gearbox housing, and the oval discthat retains the knives.

Hillside Mowing

Because each drive unit is sealed with it’s own

supply of lubrication, the mower can operate atany angle (up to 90 degrees), for long periods oftime. The lubrication stays within each module,and doesn’t run to one end of the bed.

Knives

The standard knife has a 12 degree pitch. Fortough conditions such as down crop, an 18

degree knife is available. The 18 degree knivesgives more lift to help pick up the crop for a

cleaner cut. This optional 18 degree knife takesa little more horsepower to operate and is moresubject to damage in abusive conditions.

MAINFRAME

Hitch

All models use a heavy-duty, one-piece tubehitch design. The larger models, HTD8 andHTD9, use a wide beam design to accommodatelarger tractors and wider wheel spacings. TheHTD7 offers an optional offset hitch for the largertractors with wide wheel tread.

when the PTO is turned off.

Main Drive Gearbox

The heavy-duty main drive gearbox has two

separate oil reservoirs. Both are separate fromthe cutterbar modules. The gearbox contains90W gear oil. The lubrication used in thecutterbar is heavier EPO grease designed forlubricating the bevel gears in the cutterbarmodule.

Inner Flotation Spring

The inner flotation spring is standard on allmodels. It is set at the factory and is non-adjustable. It takes pressure off the inner skidshoe to increase wear life.

Outer Flotation Spring

Challenger ® offers an outer flotation spring asstandard equipment for the models HTD8 andHTD9. This reduces the wear on the outer skidshoe giving it a longer wear life. Outer flotation

springs are optional for the HTD7.

Hydraulic Lift Cylinder

The hydraulic lift cylinder is standard on all

models and is used to raise and lower thecutterbar for transport and storage.

Transport Lock

The transport lock valve is used to hydraulicallylock the cutterbar in the raised position whentransporting, storing or working on the machine.It stops the cutterbar from lowering if hydraulicpressure is lost.

Cutterbar Breakaway

The cutterbar breakaway is designed to prevent

damage if the cutterbar hits an object. It givesthe operator time to stop before serious damageis done. The spring tension is adjustable and if itis tripped, the operator simply backs up to resetthe breakaway.

Heavy Duty Curtain

All the HTD series disc mowers offer a heavy

curtain as well as a reinforced curtain frame.This curtain helps to contain material andreduces the possibility of objects being throwntoward the tractor.

Swathboard

The Swathboard guides the cut crop away fromthe uncut crop. This separates the cut anduncut crop, making it easier to mow.

The optional tall crop divider attaches to theouter end of the disc mower and is used toseparate tall material. The tall crop dividerprovides a clean division between the standingcrop and crop being cut. It improves the cuttingperformance in tall, tangled crops.

2” Topping Skids (Set of Four)

The 2” (51 mm) high skid shoes providesadditional cutting height for longer stubble. Thehigh skid shoe is also recommended in rocky

Offset Hitch Bundle for HTD7

The offset hitch moves the mower (HTD7 only) over 12” (305 mm), to allow the use of larger

tires or wider wheel spacing. The offset hitch allows the operator to use the full width of thecutterbar, and prevent the rear wheel from running over the uncut crop.
