The Discovery conference is the ultimate professional learning event in Melbourne focusing on innovative and evidence-based practice for teaching primary and secondary students in Health, Physical and Sport Education. If you are interested in high quality professional learning this is a must see event.
Following the success of our eight previous Discovery conferences and other major conferences in ACT, VIC, NSW and QLD, Dr Amanda Telford and Rob Malpeli Directors of Peak Phys Ed are very pleased to present the 9th ‘Discovery’ conference in Melbourne. Discovery 2018 gives teachers from primary, secondary and special schools the opportunity to choose from 40 high quality elective workshops. Four sessions will be held throughout the day, with participants able to choose from one of 10 parallel streams per session to suit their particular needs and interests. All sessions focus on contemporary, inclusive practice and the practical aspects of health, physical education and sport
education. Most sessions within the program will be tailored to the Australian Curriculum and the Victorian Curriculum.
Over 45 dynamic presenters will showcase their expertise and knowledge of health education, physical education, physical activity, exercise science, health and wellbeing and sport education.
For a full description of all Peak Phys Ed conferences, membership benefits, events, consultancy, and other services, newsletters and resources check out www.peakphysed.com.au

Tailoring practical sessions for students with special needs
C10 This session is designed to investigate many of the unseen challenges that many of our “special needs” students face on a
day-to-day or moment-to-moment basis. We will look at the underlying physiological and neurological causes that manifest themselves into the behaviours that we witness and subsequently have to deal with. From here we will discuss; ideas to minimise their impact, and (more importantly) how our attitude towards our students can enable them to feel valued and to succeed. Let’s better understand our most challenged students.

Looking forward looking back
D2 You’ve all seen “Back to the Future’. Rob and Luke will use the VO2 max cycle ergometer test rather than the DeLorean time
machine to go back to earlier parts of Unit 3 and consolidate understanding of key concepts around energy system interplay, acute responses and fatigue mechanisms and then go forwards to consider chronic adaptations and legal/illegal practices. They will then come back to the present and deal with what has just happened in the VO2 max test – be transported through the whole course in 60 minutes!

Proud 2 Play (LGBTI+ youth) - ‘Counting down the days until P.E is over’
D3 LGBTI+ youth encounter many roadblocks to sport participation, and this starts with their first inception to sport in physical
education. Factors including fear of rejection and the ‘binary model’ of sports by sporting and PE communities create a pre-disposition that sporting communities provide a lack of inclusion. Proud 2 Play seeks to encourage LGBTI+ young people to participate in sport and exercise, by providing structured opportunities and pathways for them to do so, this includes creating inclusive policies and teaching guidelines to ensure every student feels safe and welcome in PE classes.
