We are the only provider of Humanist Ceremonies to offer this Promise.

Humanist Society Scotland is a national charity working for an ethical, rational, secular society which is fair and compassionate.

As the longest-standing and most trusted provider of Humanist Ceremonies in Scotland we support and co-ordinate our nation’s largest and best known group of Humanist Celebrants. We have over 120 celebrants and are the number one choice for Humanist Ceremonies in Scotland.

Humanist Society Scotland Promise

We’re Insured All HSS Registered Celebrants are covered by our Public Liability Insurance.

We’ve Got it CoveredIt is very rare that an HSS Registered Celebrant would be unable to conduct a ceremony they were booked for; and this would only be in extreme circumstances such as serious illness. However, as the largest provider of Humanist Ceremonies in Scotland we have the network to find you a replacement, even at very short notice. We have office staff available to ensure we can respond quickly to any emergency with minimal stress to you. Although unlikely to happen, always ask your Celebrants how they provide cover in emergencies.

Developing Skills to Give You the Best Our Celebrants are highly trained and participate in ongoing CPD.

Setting the Standard All HSS Registered Celebrants work to a set of standards to ensure that your families are given the best service. Our celebrants are also subject to a robust complaints and grievance process. In the unlikely event you have any concerns about a ceremony please raise these with your celebrant directly in the first instance. If this proves difficult please email our commited office team at ceremonies@humanism.scot and we will do all we can to resolve the matter.

Humanist Society ScotlandIn addition to our work providing Humanist Ceremonies, HSS is an active campaigning charity. Humanist Society Scotland promotes Humanist values to people in Scotland, campaigns for an ethical, rational and secular future and gives voice to the millions of people in Scotland who live without religion. We support a community of around 15000 members across Scotland helping us in our work for a fairer world, through activities such as our pastoral support services, school visitor programme, campaigning, and international defence of Human Rights.

A Humanist FuneralEvery funeral ceremony an HSS Registered Celebrant conducts is as unique as the life it celebrates. Our Celebrants will spend time with your families getting to know them and learning about their loved ones. This dedicated, personal approach enables us to craft meaningful and dignified ceremonies which are a true celebration of someone’s life.

Religious Content

Humanist Society Scotland Funerals often include readings, poetry and music, and our Celebrants have lots of experience in helping families with these choices. HSS Registered Celebrants are trained in dealing with requests for religious content in a ceremony and it is very rare for a solution not to be found. We can accommodate religious content provided it doesn’t include an act of worship such as prayers and singing hymns. It would be inauthentic and disrespectful for a Humanist Celebrant to lead an act of worship. We do provide

a moment of quiet reflection when people may remember the deceased in the way that best fits with their beliefs. More and more families are asking for a Humanist Ceremony. Often, that request is because they have attended and liked a Humanist Ceremony, the deceased and/or family identify with the beliefs and values of Humanism and there is possibly a link to Humanist Society Scotland through our membership, charitable work or a previous ceremony.

We believe only a Humanist Celebrant can conduct a Humanist Ceremony. When families request a Humanist Ceremony Funeral Directors have a duty to meet that request with a professional and reliable Humanist Celebrant. An HSS Registered Celebrant is a safe pair of hands for any family requesting a Humanist Ceremony. A civil celebrant cannot provide a family with an authentic Humanist Ceremony.

Booking an HSS Registered CelebrantWe know that time is key when you are arranging the services of a Celebrant, which is why we offer a number of booking options to make booking simple and quick. Wherever possible and particularly if a family have requested a specific Celebrant, it is always advisable to confirm their availability before confirming any slot at the Crematorium.

You may have a partnership with your local HSS Registered Celebrant and they will likely be your first call. As HSS Registered Celebrants work as part of a team, if they are unavailable they will always help to arrange an alternative Celebrant, often having cover in place within minutes.

We have included the contact details of our Celebrants, by area, as an easy reference point for you.

We also have a central administrator who can help cover any requests by texting all our Celebrants in your locality and beyond if necessary. We aim to have cover in place for you within an hour of your call. We are delighted that a number of Funeral Directors use this service already and find it so helpful.
