Entrance Requirements 1. Five subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education

Examination, including Chinese Language and English Language (“Syllabus B” before 2007) at level 2 / Grade E or above, and passes 3 other subjects plus at least 3 years of full-time work experience; or

2. Yi Jin graduates plus at least 3 years of full-time work experience; or

2. Mature applicants of at least 23 years of age by the start date of the programme, and have at least 5 years of full-time work experience.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited for a written test and interview.

PART 1 Foundation Certificate in Management Studies (FCMS)Part 1 is designed to prepare school leavers with work experience to undertake study again after being away from formal education for a number of years. It will enrich students’ basic business concepts and academic writing skills, thus enabling them to pursue study at the next level.

ue to the limited number of higher education places available in the past, many people have missed the opportunity to continue their studies after secondary education. The School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers a Diploma in Management Studies (DMS), which is specially designed for aspiring learners to obtain a progression diploma followed by a bachelor's degree in about 4 years of part-time study.

Programme AimThe DMS programme aims to equip students with the basic management skills as well as knowledge required in the workplace, and to prepare them for further study.

PART 2Diploma in Management Studies (DMS)Part 2 is designed on the common first year business study approach and prepares students for further study. It not only increases students’ know-how in business and management but also assists them in their career and study plans by offering different specialisations.

Credit Transfer Credit transfer may be granted to students who possess equivalent qualifications at appropriate level. The maximun number of credits that can be transferred is 18 units.

Assessment and AwardAssessment consists of a combination of coursework and examination. A student will be awarded a Continuing Education Diploma in Management Studies upon successful completion of Part 2 of the programme.

Progression OpportunityUpon successful completion of the DMS programme, students are eligible to apply for one of the top-up degree programmes offered in Hong Kong by SCOPE in collaboration with overseas universities.

ClassesThere are approximately 6 - 9 hours of class per week (normally 2 weekday evenings and 1 weekend afternoon or/and evening). Classes will be held in SCOPE@CityU (Kowloon Tong) or TSTE Learning Centre (Tsim Sha Tsui East) or SCOPE Admiralty Learning Centre (Admiralty) or other designated SCOPE Learning Centres.

Mode of Study and DurationPart-time, 21 months

Entrance Requirements 1. HKALE or GCEAL with grade E or above in at least two subjects; or2. Students who have successfully completed Part 1 of the DMS programme or equivalent qualifications obtained from other

local institutions; or 3. Five subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, including Chinese Language and English Language

(“Syllabus B” before 2007) at level 2 / Grade E or above, and passes 3 other subjects plus a minimum of 1 year full-time formal post-secondary study or equivalent qualifications (e.g. IVE Diploma/Certificate); or

4. Yi Jin graduates, who have successfully completed a minimum of 1 year formal post-secondary study or equivalent qualifications (e.g. graduates of pre-associate degree programme or other certificate programmes); and

5. At least 1 year of full-time work experience.Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview.

Assessment and AwardAssessment consists of a combination of coursework and examination. If not proceeding to Part 2, a student will be awarded a Continuing Education Certificate in Management Studies upon successful completion of Part 1.

Progression OpportunityStudents who successfully complete Part 1 will proceed to Part 2 of the programme.

Business and Its EnvironmentProvides students with a basic understanding of the business environment, the nature and structure of modern business organisation, and various business functions. An overview of the local environment for business and the ways to manage it will be introduced.

Business LawProvides students with a basic understanding of the legal system and particularly the law related to business in Hong Kong.

Business StatisticsIntroduces to students the basic concepts and applications of statistics used in business, with an emphasis on interpretation of output rather than on statistical methods and calculations.

Critical English Communication SkillsDevelops students’ critical thinking ability through reading, writing and discussing current local and international issues in English. Through the interactive process, students will learn to express themselves and communicate effectively with others.

Economics for BusinessEquips students with knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics so that they can apply those theories in analysing the behavior of consumers, business strategies and the implications of government policies on the economy.

English Academic SkillsDevelops students’ communicative competence through an integrated approach. All the four English skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, will be introduced and both the accuracy and fluency in using English as a second language will be emphasised.

Information Technology for BusinessEquips students with basic skills and knowledge in applying information technology to business operations.

International BusinessProvides students with an understanding of the growth of international business and the impacts of globalisation. The course also aims to equip students with skills and knowledge in managing international business.
