TWO LEFT FEETThis week’s Newsletter Article comes to us from Darren Pope. Many of us know Darren as our former Head of Secondary School. Darren now serves as Director of Leadership and School Improvement with Lutheran Education Queensland. He has written the article below for Lutheran School Principals and Leaders and makes reference to Walk My Way, which our own Mrs Cook participated in last weekend. Enjoy. Do you have two left feet? Heel, toe, heel, toe, 1, 2, 3, 4. Do you remember learning to dance? Helping students discover the delight of dancing the Military Two Step, Queen’s Waltz and Promenade was great, but the joyful energy of the Heel and Toe Polka remains a favourite.

God created us to move! Heel, then toe is the way we were designed to move. Unable to look directly behind us and the difficulty experienced in walking backwards, highlight that the rhythm of heel, toe keeps us walking and moving forwards. Walking allows us to move at a slower pace, to observe, notice and take in situations and our surroundings. Whilst customary, amidst the daily demands of His ministry, Jesus often walked. Despite large demanding crowds we don’t become aware of Jesus rushing or running, rather sharing time with people, walking with them, listening and teaching.

Jesus comes to us. In coming to us, it is always God’s work. He walks with us each day, through Christ. In Luke 24, Jesus comes to the disciples on the road to Emmaus and in Mark we encounter Jesus coming to the disciples across the lake. Throughout Australia, Walk My Way is an opportunity to respond to the love and grace of our Lord by walking the road together in fellowship, service to others and learning.

Learning is social, grounded in relationship and a life-long journey. The advent of a new term and new semester brings a refreshed opportunity and challenge to walk. Time demands, pressure to rush, to respond now, to get it done and to hurry up are all real and present challenges as we walk forward. Jesus reminds us to walk His way, to slow down as He comes to us and joins us on our journey and the daily journey of each person we encounter.

SECONDARY SCHOOL WELLBEING AND RELATIONSHIPS ARE VITAL: It has been proven that without any shadow of a doubt that if quality relationships exist between students and teachers that are based on mutual respect then students will achieve larger gains in their learning year on year. So how blessed are we to have teachers who go out of their way to develop these relationships and truly get to know and support the students not only in their learning but in their personal growth.

More recently there has also been concrete links made between students wellbeing and their outcomes. I know it sounds ridiculous that we need to research to tell us that children that feel safe and supported will do well. But it is true.

In the Secondary School we proactively improve the wellbeing of students. An example of this is that we have recently had two sessions run by external presenters that support our students in maintaining healthy relationships and improving their wellbeing:1. Endometriosis Awareness Presentations – the College was specially selected to take part in a trial that

brought together medical professionals to raise awareness of this condition amongst young females. The feedback from the students was very positive.

2. Michelle Mitchell delivered three presentations. One on sexual health (Year 7), one on creating a culture of inclusion (Year 7) and one on partying responsibly (Year 11/12). Michelle is an award-winning speaker, author and educator. Michelle started her career as a primary school teacher. Her passion for life skills education led her to leave teaching and found a harm prevention charity, called Youth Excel. Youth Excel initially delivered small group support programs for girls ‘at risk’ of dropping out of education. Her team of 12 staff serviced 120 families and 50 local schools with tailor made care. Michelle’s work has been featured on The Today Show, Today Tonight and Channel 10 Morning News, as well as countless print media including The Age, The Courier Mail and Daily Telegraph. She is a regular contributor to radio. Further information about Michelle and her programs can be found at https://www.michellemitchell.org/

The College is serious about nurturing the whole child (body, mind and spirit). Our pastoral team are always willing to support students and can be contacted at any time if there are issues that the College needs to be aware of.

CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 7 ROBOTICS TEAM : Our Year 7 Robotics received a Best Performance Award at the Australian Open Robotics Championship. They were up against teams from China, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. This is an excellent achievement and sees our students well placed to contest the World Cup of robotics in China in December.

HATS AND SHIRTS : I recently spoke to the boys in the Secondary School about wearing the correct hat with the correct uniform and having shirts tucked in. We believe in students having pride in their College and uniform is definitely an indicator of this. I am hopeful that students can step up and take responsibility for meeting the expectations set by the College. As always, I appreciate the support of parents in this matter.

GRANDPARENTS DAY : I am writing this email to invite Grandparents or Special Friends in on Monday, 19 August for a special tour of the Secondary School lead by their Grandchildren. The tours will commence at 11am from the Main Administration Building. Upon arrival at the College students will meet them to commence the tour. This is a great opportunity for students to show their Grandparents the place they learn in and discuss what they are currently doing at school. Please fill in the details on this form (by clicking here) to confirm attendance.

FOUNDER'S DAY : What a fantastic day we had at the Secondary Campus. The whole school in community together. Thank you to all the staff and students for an amazing day as we celebrated the College. A special thankyou to our P&FA for their preparation of lunch. Their support was invaluable and really appreciated by staff and students.

CONGRATULATIONS : Ben Craddock (Year 9) was selected into the Queensland Karate Association State team and competed in the Australian National Championships that were held from 1 to 4 August in Launceston, Tasmania. Well done Ben!

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CAREAt OSHC we have been busy updating our space. We have built a fantastic garden bed and filled it with yummy things we will use for meals at OSHC. We’ve also made a photo wall of all our favourite memories from Vacation Care. Feel free to pop in and have a look.

We are in the 3rd week of the New Before School routine. The children are really enjoying being able to go to school early and play with their friends from class.

We are still having some issues with the Child Care Subsidy. If you've sent an email regarding this, we apologise for the delay in getting back to you. We are getting through the list but it can be a time consuming endeavour. If you have any urgent concerns, please don't hesitate to contact Simon.

As the system is automated, please let us know via email if there are any issues - [email protected]

GBC SPORTSOur first games of the term commenced away at Faith Plainland on Saturday, 27 July with teams playing Basketball and Soccer (boys), and Touch Football and Volleyball (girls). This was a very successful first round for us, with a total of 8 wins from a possible 15. Despite several absentees, attending students stepped up to fill in any gaps, and some teams played full games with no substitutions!

The second round was played at home on Saturday, 3 August and once again we had a very exciting day, with another 8 wins! One of the highlights of the morning was the Seniors Soccer game which was drawn at 3-3 in the final minutes. In the last kick of the game Lachlan L scored the winning goal!

A special shout out goes to all students who came along to support our teams, and to older students for encouraging those in the younger grades. A special thanks to Talisa N and Kate R for supporting the Intermediate touch team in the absence of their regular coaches.

Don’t forget we have a BYE round this weekend (Saturday, 10 August) and return at home on Saturday, 17 August against The Springfield Anglican College.
