SPECIAL PRAYERS ORACIONES ESPECIALES
“Call and response”: two words that summarize the substan-
tial content of the readings of this Sunday. Jesus on his way to Jeru-
salem calls some to follow him and give him a radical response
(Gospel). In this, Jesus overcomes the demands of the call and the
following in the Old Testament, particularly in the vocation of Elisha
(first reading). The Galatians - and all Christians in general - have
been called to the freedom of the Spirit, and therefore have to res-
pond with their behavior to their new condition of free men, avoi-
ding falling back into slavery (second reading).
Three attitudes to follow Jesus. We can formulate them like
this: Total delivery, absolute decision, full detachment. We must be
willing to leave the past, not to look back, but to look forward to the
land that has to be worked and that one day will bear its fruit. In
following Jesus Christ, conditions are not admit-
ted, if they imply subordinating the call to one's
own will. Radicality is called for, because the
kingdom of God is urgent and can not wait: Elis-
ha could put conditions to Elijah (go to say
goodbye to his parents), but the Christian, if the
Kingdom requires it, has to get rid of this concern
for a good urgent and superior. Finally, the dis-
ciple Jesus asks to place exclusively in him his
security, renouncing all kinds of material and hu-
man securities. Jesus has nothing, only his Fat-
her. The disciple will have to be willing to have nothing, only a path
and a wayfarer that will lead him towards the cross.
“Llamada y respuesta”: dos palabras que resumen el conteni-
do sustancial de las lecturas del presente domingo. Jesús en su ca-
minar hacia Jerusalén llama a algunos a seguirle y a darle una res-
puesta radical (Evangelio). En esto Jesús supera las exigencias del
llamado y del seguimiento en el Antiguo Testamento, particular-
mente en la vocación de Eliseo (primera lectura). Los gálatas -y to-
dos los cristianos en general- han sido llamados a la libertad del Es-
píritu, y por consiguiente tienen que responder con su comporta-
miento a su nueva condición de hombres libres, evitando caer otra
vez en la esclavitud (segunda lectura).
Tres actitudes para seguir a Jesús. Podemos formularlas así:
Entrega total, decisión absoluta, desprendimiento pleno. Hay que
estar dispuesto a dejar el pasado, a no mirar hacia atrás, sino a ten-
der los ojos hacia adelante, hacia la tierra que hay que labrar y que
un día dará su fruto. En el seguimiento de Jesu-
cristo no se admiten condiciones, si éstas impli-
can subordinar el llamado al propio querer. Se
pide radicalidad, porque el reino de Dios apre-
mia y no puede esperar: Eliseo pudo poner con-
diciones a Elías (ir a despedirse de sus padres),
pero el cristiano, si así lo requiere el Reino, ha
de librarse de esta preocupación por un bien ur-
gente y superior. Finalmente, al discípulo Jesús
pide el poner exclusivamente en él su seguridad,
renunciando a todo tipo de seguridades materia-
les y humanas. Jesús no tiene nada, sólo a su Padre. El discípulo
habrá de estar dispuesto a no tener nada, sólo un camino y un cami-
nante que le va llevando hacia la cruz.

Bible Summer Class for Children & Youth-Clase Bíblica
de Verano para Niños y Jóvenes
Parents are invited to register their children for Bible classes in
the summer. The registrations will be open all the month of June
and the first week of July of the present year. Last year, 90 chil-
dren and 40 young people participated. We hope this year will
increase attendance.
