Tamasoma Jyotir Gamaya: From Darkness Unto Light ...

In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Outside India, Diwali is more than a Hindu festival, it's a celebration of South-Asian identities. If you are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya, sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw the senses, concentrate on this supreme light and illuminate the soul.

On Sept 15th, Monday—Gujarati Samaj Of Detroit & Jain Samaj had a wonderful privilege to host Gujarat’s rising star ‘Aishwarya Majmudar’ (Star TV fame) from Ahmedabad. Labeled as ‘Chhote Ustaad’ by Amitabh Bachchan, the young singer performed favorite Hindi Songs at Jain Temple. When asked what was the secret behind her Melodious singing talent, she modestly answered ‘Every person has their expertise in some field, all you do is identify it, pursue it and work hard to excel..”

In a very short period of publicity time, we had about 100+ people gathered at Jain Temple. Gujarati Audience was happy to hear her sweet singing voice with great enthusiasm. Thanks to EC/BOT members, Jain Samaj Executives, Minesh Parikh, Suman Rawal & others for precious help towards hosting this entertaining event!

GSOD’s 2008 Navratri update September 27, 2008 Saturday was Garba & Dandia night of Gujarati Samaj Of Detroit. ‘Ratri Before Navratri’ event was a big success! Anand & Baroda fame Brij Joshi & his group performed Super Duper Raas & Garba in front of more than 1600 people at UofM Fieldhouse Arena, Dearborn.

GSOD had organized to have a big stage in the center of arena where artists performed the tunes. Ticketing areas and queues were well maintained by the EC/BOT teams to ensure smooth flow of guests without any waiting times. Chairs were provided at both ends in arena for patrons to enjoy watching Garba & Dandia dance. The Garba started at around 9pm as the arena started to fill up. Dandia dance was the second phase of the event.

Many EC/BOT members had gotten Arati thalis for the mid-event Arati. Brij Joshi & Group sang very well bringing the religious atmosphere in the arena. There were young adults and seniors, Gujaratis and Non-Gujaratis —they all enjoyed dancing the Navratri tunes.

Upstairs in the Arena, Suraj Food was managing the Snack Food stall. You could see people enjoying Cha, Bhel, Samosas, Chat, Pavbhaji etc etc.. Yummy wah shu mazaa aavee! And then there was Clothing/Garment booth as well with variety of Punjabi clothes for sale. 8 contest winners got great prizes for the best performances in the categories by the judges. Overall the ‘Ratri Before Navratri’ brought wonderful and fun filled experience amalgamated with Navratri spirit. Finally we would like to thank all EC/BOT, Volunteers, Radio program owners and Patrons to make this core Gujarati cultural event a grand success!

Season of Lights

Dunes of vapors from crackers rise, Engulf, as odorous airs resound Effusing joys to all abound Pearls of gleams in these autumn nights Adorn our lives else trite With sparklers that motley skies As soaring spirits of powder wander Let us thank the heavenly might, In this festive season of lights.

Regardless of the mythological explanation one prefers, what the festival of lights really stands for today is a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill, and a religiously sanctioned celebration of the simple - and some not so simple - joys of life. ~Times of India editorial

Dhamachakdi Cholafali — Yummy Diwali Snack!!! Did you know?

Tablecloths were originally meant to be

served as towels with which dinner guests could wipe their hands and faces after eating!

There are no clocks in Las Vegas gambling

casinos! It takes glass one million years to decompose,

which means it never wears out and can be recycled an infinite amount of times!

It's illegal to drink beer out of a bucket while

you're sitting on a curb in St. Louis ! Over 2500 left handed people a year are killed

from using products made for right handed people!

The sun is 330,330 times larger than the

earth! A 'jiffy' is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of

a second! During your lifetime, you'll eat about 60,000

pounds of food, that's the weight of about 6 elephants!

One gallon of used motor oil can ruin

approximately one million gallons of fresh water!

It is estimated that millions of trees in the

world are accidentally planted by squirrels who bury nuts and then forget where they hid them!

The original name for the butterfly was

'flutterby'! Nose prints are used to identify dogs, just like

humans use fingerprints!
