Coteaux d’Aix en Provence is the farthest west of Provence’s appellations, and the soils here are a mix of stony clay, limestone, sand, gravel and loam. You can expect this rosé to be charming and supple, with bright red berry and citrus. It will be a fine option as a sipping wine but will also pair well with lighter picnic-style meals.

As great as steak or a grilled sausage on a bun might be, sometimes you want something a little lighter. We’re not saying you should eschew a meat-heavy summer menu, just gently suggesting that you branch out. How about a bright, flavourful rosé from Provence for that salmon wrapped in foil with summer veggies that’s waiting on the grill? Or a crisp, savoury Sauvignon Blanc to sip with that avocado salad? Go for it! Meatless options, no-cook salads loaded with fresh locally sourced ingredients, fresh-fruit platters – Vintages has a wine for them all. The summer sky’s the limit.

A serious student of the art, Parker impressed Invivo co-founders Tim Lightbourne and Rob Cameron with her tasting instincts as she assembled the nal blend of this juicy Sauvignon Blanc made from grapes grown in ve vineyards. GRECO BIANCO

CORTESE ARNEIS

Greco Bianco hails from the mountain-ous, rugged, rural Calabria: the toe of Italy. Aromatic and evocative, Greco Bian-co can create wines that are dry or sweet. It’s important to note that such is the historical popularity of the name “Greco” that it has become attached to several white grapes in Italy. Greco Bianco stands as a distinctive Calabrian expres-sion. Bright and zesty, it’s great with grilled seafood.

Piedmont native Cortese is somewhat challenging to grow, and requires special care in the vineyard to keep the vine’s vigorous nature from taking over, which can reduce the quality and intensity of the final wine. The light, aromatic Gavi wines Cortese produces are floral, tangy and fruity with a pure minerality. Their lifted character makes them refreshing sippers, but these elegant wines are versatile food wines with a particular affinity for summertime alfresco dining with dishes like fish, chicken burgers or green salads.

Arneis, the “little rascal,” was so named because it’s such a challenging grape to grow. It hails from Piedmont and is typically used to soften the aggressive tannins of Nebbiolo wines. Increasingly, Arneis has enjoyed success as a single- varietal wine, the best of which come from its home, Roero. Arneis is typically unoaked, crisp and floral, but some producers use oak to craft creamy, fuller-textured wines. The lighter styles are great as sippers or with seafood appetizers, while the fuller styles pair with pork, veal or chicken.

VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO

GARGANEGA FALANGHINA

Vernaccia di San Gimignano was awarded DOCG status in 1993 and is Tuscany’s only DOCG white wine, but its fame reaches back to the 1200s. It’s mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy, where it was famously connected with Bolsena eels. The soils in which it’s grown are rich in fossilized sea life, and this imparts a refined, distinct, flinty minerality to the wines. Floral, bright and crisp with a bitter herbal accent, Vernaccia di San Gimignano is simply brilliant with seafood dishes or Portobello mushroom burgers.

You may not recognize this Veneto grape, but 10-1 you know it. This is because though it’s the principal grape in the blend for Soave (one of Italy’s most popular and renowned white wines), Garganega rarely appears on the label. Soave is a lifted, floral wine with white and yellow fruit and garden herbs and can develop suggestions of chamomile and honey with age. It’s a refined option, especially alongside seafood or an avocado-tuna salad.

Falanghina, which is believed to have originated in Greece but now flourishes in Campania, is a blend of two different but almost identical varieties: Falanghina Beneventana and Falanghina Flegrea. It’s now almost exclusively thought of in terms of the hilly, mountainous, volcanic soils of Campania, where it has risen to be considered the area’s signature white grape. Unoaked and fragrant, with or-ange blossom, apple, spice and mineral, this zesty wine makes a great sipper and is perfect with a range of dishes such as baked tomatoes, or fresh squid with lemon.

VERMENTINOVermentino is most associated with three regions: Liguria, Sardinia and Tuscany. The key feature that unites these areas is that they all grow Vermentino close to the sea. This maritime influence not only cools the grapes, ensuring freshness and vitality, it also imparts a precise saline minerality to the wines. Vermentinos from Liguria and Sardinia are quite structured and intense, while Tuscany’s versions express a more fruit-driven, spicy charac-ter that’s perfect for herbed grilled shrimp, or grilled pork sausages.

NIAGARA’S COOLEST

Prevailing winds, proximity to the temperature-moderating influence of Lake Ontario, nuanced variations in aspect and slope, and careful site and grape selection are just a few of the factors at work making Niagara such an impressive cool-climate growing region. The results are generous, bracing, lean white and sparkling wines; refined, elegant, distinctive Pinot Noirs; and top-flight Icewines. Four local winemakers discuss their wines and key aspects of Niagara’s cool growing conditions.

Four distinct wines express the diversity of Niagara’s cool climate and showcase some of the star grapes that shine brightest in it.

Getting a handle on Megalomaniac. LEFT: Lakeview Cellars.

“Riesling is a winter-hardy grape with good cold resistance,” says Sébastien Jacquey, vice-president of winemaking and vineyards operations. “We make the Narcissist Riesling from grapes planted in 1996, from the Weis 21 Clone, which Megalomaniac owner John Howard imported from Germany. Our site at the top of the Escarpment has good air flow, and the site is warmed in the winter and cooled in the summer. But it’s still important to understand the challenges as well as the advantages of our macro-climate and make the right adjustments in the vineyard – do we need to leave the leaves to shelter the grapes or de-leaf to expose the fruit more? Niagara has more extremes than Europe; we have to stay on top of the grapes to be sure that we keep the balance in the wines.”

The grapes for the Château des Charmes Brut Sparkling are sourced from vines planted in 1995. “These mature vines give us great fruit,” says Amélie Boury, vice-president of winemaking and operations. “The site is protected by the Escarpment, which shields the grapes from the cold and makes the site just a little warmer with low humidity. This is good because it helps with disease pressure and is good for ripening.” These factors are important to Amélie and her team as they look for “pristine grapes. We hand-harvest and select carefully. We try for a 50-50 split between the Pinot and the Chardonnay, and though some years we have to have a little more of one or the other, conditions in our vineyard help us keep the wine consistent.”

The G. Marquis wines were created to honour Magnotta’s founder, Gabe Magnotta, who passed away in 2009. “He was an inspiration to me,” says winemaker Peter Rotar. “It was important to celebrate him. So this meant choosing one of the best vineyards to make the best wines.” The site selected was the former Stone Road Vineyard, now called G. Marquis. “It was planted in 1994 and is very good for Pinot Noir. We have to take what the vineyard gives us, and Pinot Noir is very sensitive, but the temperatures here are usually 2-3°C lower than in other sites. We ferment in stainless steel and then age the wine for six months in stainless and three months in oak. We do this because we want to keep the freshness and balance of the wine. It is quality first – this is to honour Gabe. I always tell people to look closely at the label; it tells the story of Gabe’s life.”

“The Vidal for our Icewine comes from the Four Mile Creek area,” Scott McGregor, winemaker at Lakeview Cellars, explains. “The moderating effect of the lake means that we can pick much later than other areas, which is good because the fruit has longer to develop on the vine, but it is also a risk.” Icewine requires consistent tempera-tures of -8°C before the grapes can be harvested, with -10 to -12°C being optimal. “In 2018, we harvested in late January into early February. We are lucky because we have the luxury to pass on opportunities for harvesting. It can be a bit of a gamble, as we go through periods of freeze and thaw, but one thing about Niagara- on-the-Lake, we can be certain that the cold will come, and the flavours we get are worth waiting for.”

VINTAGES 51

CASA NOBLE REPOSADO TEQUILAThis multi-award-winning Reposado is aged in new French white oak barrels for the maximum allowed time (364 days; many Reposados are aged less than half that long) and distilled three times. Smooth and full-bodied, it features flavours of sweet cooked agave and toasted oak.

14401 750 mL $79.95

HERRADURA SILVER TEQUILA The Herradura distillery practices sustainability in all facets of its production and was the only tequila producer to receive the Environmental Excellence Award from Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection in 2015. Their Silver tequila features flavours of sweet agave and subtle oak notes thanks to ageing in American white oak barrels for 45 days beyond the industry standard.

13510 750 mL $66.65

METEORO JOVEN MEZCAL This handcrafted mezcal gets its subtle smoky flavour from agaves roasted for days in earthen pits by river stones that have been heated with mesquite wood. Twice distilled in copper pot stills, it features notes of wet wood and spices. Try it neat or in a margarita.

549006 750 mL $74.85

TIERRA NOBLE AÑEJO TEQUILA  Made in a family-run distillery in the mountains of Jalisco (the highest modern distillery in the world, in fact, at more than 2,000 metres above sea level), this superbly structured, silky Añejo is aged in American and French white oak for two to three years and shows off flavours of dried fruit and vanilla.

14671 750 mL $78.35

with the right stuJean-François Reaud knew right away when he took over the estate created by his great-grandfather in 1904 that he was going to do right by its wines: Château Les Aubiers has been organically farmed since 2011. Reaud’s passion for the Right Bank shines through in this balanced, generous, rich wine that’s packed with black fruit. It’ll be right at home at the dinner table or in the cellar.
