Overview/AudienceWith the significant incidence and prevalence of cardiac and vascular disease in the United States, health care professionals must stay abreast of the developments within this field. Open to all members of the intraprofessional team, Penn State’s Inaugural Dimensions in Heart and Vascular Care: Advancing Your Scope of Excellence, is designed to highlight the numerous dimensions and advancements within the field of heart and vascular care. This meeting is designed to impact practice, explore evidence-based research, and demonstrate cutting-edge techniques that can be directly applied to the learner’s clinical and academic practice.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:• Incorporate new technologies, drugs, and procedures into the care of patients with complex cardiac and vascular disease• Integrate advancements in diagnostic evaluation to treat patients with complex cardiac and vascular disease• Discuss the impact that health-care reform has on the past, present, and future of patient care• Recognize the importance of the multidisciplinary team approach in management of cardiac and vascular patient care• Identify methods to improve communication and patient outcomes throughout the numerous aspects of heart and vascular disease• Incorporate current research into practice to improve outcomes for those patients living with heart and vascular disease

Consistent with AMA guidelines, nurse practitioners and physician assistants will receive a certificate verifying their participation in the activity. The certificate will indicate that the program was approved for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM.

Nurses will receive a certificate from Penn State College of Medicine verifying their participation in 7.0 hours of approved continuing medical education. Continuing education activities which are approved by accredited institutions of higher education and that are relevant to patient care or professional nursing meet the requirements of mandatory continuing education for registered nurses in Pennsylvania, as required by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Lawrence I. Sinoway, MDDirector of the Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute. He continues to serve as program director of the NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) and as director of the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTSI). Dr. Sinoway was named a Distinguished Professor in 2009, and has been an NIH-funded investigator since 1987. He is also the program director of an NIH Program Project Grant. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles.

Al Vicere, PhDExecutive Education Professor of Strategic Leadership for Penn State Smeal College of Business. He was the founding director of Penn State Institute for the Study of Organizational Effectiveness (ISOE) and has earned a number of MBA Excellence in Teaching awards for his courses on strategic leadership. In addition to his current faculty duties at Penn State, he is president of Vicere Associates Inc., a consulting firm whose global client list includes many well-known companies. Joanne M. Conroy, MDAs Chief Health Care Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges, Joanne M. Conroy, M.D., focuses on the interface between the health-care delivery system and academic medicine, paying particular attention to how health care in academic settings can address quality-of-care and patient-centered care issues. Dr. Conroy represents the interests of approximately 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, including 64 Veterans Affairs medical centers, through the AAMC Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems in addition to overseeing the Group on Faculty Practice, Group on Resident Affairs, Chief Medical Officers Group, and the Compliance Officers Forum.

Dr. Conroy started her career in Charleston, South Carolina, where she became Chair of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, Vice President for Medical Affairs of the University Hospital, and Senior

Associate Dean of the College of Medicine at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). From 2001–2008 she served as Executive Vice President of Atlantic Health System and Chief Operating Officer and President of Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey. In those roles, Dr. Conroy gained an understanding of health system operations, hospital-physician relationships, and collaborative partnerships among the various elements of academic health systems. Dr. Conroy earned her B.A. degree in chemistry from Dartmouth College, and was awarded her M.D. degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.

In other

words, the leader’s effectiveness is first and foremost a function of what he or she knows. This implicit leadership theory—leadership equated with a person in charge who has the answers—is pervasive. This way of thinking about and exercising leadership has been woven seamlessly into the fabric of medicine’s culture.

This way of teaching leadership, which is anchored in theories and explanations, is not wrong but it is no longer adequate. Human beings do not lead from a theoretical approach; we lead from the perspective of the way leadership is experienced. Explanations alone don’t teach what is required to be a leader, much as textbooks don’t impart what it is to be a doctor or chef or pianist. Knowing is not enough.

The focus in this session is on leading yourself and is based on the premise that personal transformation must precede major systemic change, be it in a medical school, company, or country. We do not believe that you can optimally lead “out-here-in-the-world” until you have a strong leadership foundation “in-here.” This session will explore the power of Language Leadership Performance Model and introduce learners to a new language of leadership that, when mastered, will enhance their performance as a leader. Session participants will have an opportunity to “build” the House of Leadership, which will provide them with a solid foundation for being a leader and a practical framework for exercising leadership effectively. Finally, learners will be provided with a 9-step Heuristic for Leading Oneself that will equip them with a rule of thumb for tackling any leadership challenge.
