An independent inquiry to examine how London’s health and healthcare could be improved for the benefit of Londoners• London faces significant challenges in health and
healthcare - demand for, and cost of, healthcare rising due to population growth, increased longevity, chronic conditions linked to lifestyle
• Current economic climate means finances to fund increased demand are constrained – increasing need to keep people healthy and to ensure cost effective, efficient care
• London Health Commission established by Mayor of London to bring together key stakeholders to address these challenges:• Keeping Londoners healthy and reducing health
inequalities• Enabling the delivery of high quality and integrated
care• Engaging the public in decisions around their health
and care• Digital health is an integral part of the solution
Many Londoners lead healthy lives – eating well, exercising often, fulfilling jobs and social lives – but not true for all
These lifestyle factors raise the risk of serious physical health conditions – such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer - and
affect our mental health, self-esteem and happiness
1.2 million Londoners smoke, killing 8,000 people a yearMoreover 67 London schoolchildren start smoking every day – the equivalent of two classrooms
One in five Londoners will suffer from mental ill-health at some pointLondon’s employers are losing an estimated £1.1bn p.a. in sickness absence due to stress, anxiety and depression
Our research showed that for most people ‘being healthy’ means being active and eating well …
Q. What do you think it means to be healthy’? (spontaneous)
Source: IpsosMORIWord cloud representing verbatim comments when asked to define what it means to be ‘healthy’
… but despite good awareness of what they need to do to ‘be healthy, most Londoners are not making healthy choicesResearch showed that most Londoners eat ‘unhealthy’ food every week and only half exercise at the recommended levels

Everyday we make many choices that impact our health but often the healthiest choice isn’t the easiest choice …
We need to help people make healthier choices – discourage consumption of ‘unhealthy’ food and drink, encourage more physical activity, help people to stop smoking, bring people
together to overcome loneliness
Digital health is an integral part of keeping healthy
For many Londoners, better health comes through being able to quickly access high quality joined-up care when neededBetter care starts with individuals – research shows they want relevant, more proactive, better coordinated care tailored to their own specific needs
Research showed that there is widespread support for the sharing of information amongst those involved in their care …Q. It is important that the people involved in my care should be able to access and share up-to-date information on me and my health where necessary for my care or treatment (Agree or Disagree)

… but, although they see the potential benefits, there are concerns about the potential risks from sharing informationBut concerns about privacy and data security must be addressed
We need to make care more personalised and joined up and empower people to have a more active role in their own care
We need to use technology to improve access options that suit people’s different preferences and needs and provide individuals with the information they need to be more involved in their own
care
Multiple local digital health initiatives
already underway

However, London is a difficult market to launch digital health products especially for small medium sized businessesHealth and social care market in the UK is complex and fragmented with multiple providers using a vast array of different systems
But London can lead the way in digital health – potential to revolutionalise the way people manage their health and care

Finally some practical advice for those interested in digital health on how to get going …• Clear strategic focus:
• What ‘market’ is your product aimed at?– e.g. weight management, integrated care,
mental health • Who is the ‘customer’? Who will pay for/use the
product? – e.g. individual, GP, hospital, NHS England,
third sector• Strong and clearly articulated value proposition:
• What are the costs and benefits? Who pays? Who benefits?
– e.g. health improvement, patient experience, cost savings• What is the evidence? Where has it worked?
– e.g. pilot site, clinical trial, publish research• Develop and build strategic partnerships
