This rapid capacity expansion, at a time of constrained oil and gas prices, goes a long way in explaining why the oil and gas industry has shown sustained and increasing investment in use of emergent, proven technologies as an important means for reducing the cost of producing hydrocarbon resources.

Advances in telematics and embedded control, connectivity, and analytics support the oil and gas industry in its efforts to better monitor and optimize petroleum production and transport. In remote upstream environments and along pipelines, the cloud and mobility are transforming � eld operations, making SCADA implementations matters of minutes and applying analytics to predictive maintenance.

Natural gas and crude distillates from petroleum re� ning are used as feedstocks to manufacture a wide variety of petrochemicals, including the basic petrochemicals manufactured by cracking, reforming, and other processes, ole� ns and aromatics. These base petrochemicals, or products derived from them, along with other raw materials, are converted to a wide range of products. Downstream operations are being transformed by the new North American oil and gas production mix. Planning, scheduling and supply-chain management become key competitive enablers. Digitization of the industry proceeds on many levels.
